Powder Box Church located in Jerome, Arizona gets its name from its unique construction. The building was built by Sabino Gonzales in 1939 with stucco, wire mesh and blasting powder boxes. The congregation of the church aided in the building. The church was completed during 1941. The families of the Powder Box Church were Mexican American mining families that were victims of racial prejudice from the Anglo Methodists. The Methodists would not allow the Mexicans to enter their church so Gonzalez built one from wooden blasting powder boxes that had been disassembled. The town of Jerome has two hotels and a number of bed and breakfast for visitors in the area to stay at. There are also a number of restaurants and local bars to meet dining and entertainment needs. The city also has a number of working studios and art galleries that add to its culture. The unique construction of the Powder Box Church makes it an interesting stop on a tour of Jerome, Arizona. The accommodations, restaurants and cultural options make a trip to Jerome the ideal choice for a vacation. The history of the area alone is enough reason to visit and take a look around the uniquely constructed church.

So has anyone seen The Shining?

There is a theater in a nearby suburb where my wife and I would usually visit to see indie pictures. Sadly, it did not survive the first year of the pandemic. We really didn’t have a good option for indies for a while.

But this week it reopened under new ownership! We went this evening to check it out. Besides badly needed upgrades to the theaters themselves, they had done up the upstairs like The Shining: there was a life-sized poster of the twin girls with a “Come and play with us” neon sign; the bar had been done up in gold and mirrors as a replica of the Overlook Hotel bar; and then there was this:

Because, well, all work and no play does make Jack a dull boy.

Shot, quickly, with my 13 mini.

Love The Shining, one of my favourite movies. Even though I have owned it years I haven’t got round to Doctor Sleep yet. I really must.

I celebrated my 40th birthday with my bestie at the real Overlook Hotel, The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, 12 years ago. Man that place is creepy I can see why Stephen King was inspired by it. We had several very bizarre experiences which could be described as paranormal. Here’s a relevant one for a photography forum.

We went into the stair well, that for those unfamiliar is referred to as The Vortex. We were messing round taking some glamour photos for the bestie, to send to her now husband. I told her to pose in one particular place. My camera would not focus on her, so we tried my other camera, that wouldn’t focus even in manual mode. Once we got out of the stair well and tried both cameras for a similar pose and distance away both of them worked fine, so we went back down into the stairwell and tried again. The cameras refused to focus and the first one actually switched off for no apparent reason. They both worked fine for the rest of the evening and still work 12 years on and have focused at the same distance probably a few hundred times.
