On this day in 2020:

During the spring and summer I like to go on bike rides around Minneapolis. Minneapolis has a great variety of vistas to ride through, it’s a great biking town with well-tended bike paths…and it’s pretty flat.

But they are TWIN cities, so what about Saint Paul? On this day I gave it a whirl. The ride I took was…ok. It was NOT flat, the roads are kinda rough, it wasn’t as fun (at least, on this day and on this route). But at least I had a nice sunny day, as you can see from this photo of the State Capitol, taken with my iPhone SE 2020:

Ah, the purple city Prince put on the map! Great town. Sadly I've never been to St. Paul to see its twin city.

Every year at the Minnesota State Fair my wife and I visit the Fine Arts Building, and there are always many photographs among the entries. This year I found five that were some play on “small lonely house/cabin/shack in a large expanse.” I generally find these kind of photos stir some kind of emotion in me.

I took this photo over 16 years ago (!) with my OG Canon Digital Rebel. That is my Dusky Conure, Hatch.

Hatch was such an affectionate bird, and if he liked you, that was his favorite spot: perched under your chin. Sometimes he would snuggle down further in my shirt, or tucked right up against my chin: an expression of love as intimate as any dog’s (parrots can form extremely strong bonds).

It’s been a long time since Hatch left us, but there are occasionally times still (such as in the writing of this post) that I miss him enough for my eyes to sting. It was when Hatch was gone that my wife encouraged me to put up bird feeders and attract wild birds.

Aaaaaaaaanywho, this photo was printed in Bird Talk magazine (along with one other I submitted to them) in an article on the importance of play for parrots. This marks the only time one of my photos has been used in a professional publication.

ISO 400, 55mm, f5.6, 1/60 (I don’t remember if I used a flash; if I did I bounced it off the ceiling).

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go hug my dog.
