American Museum of Natural History collection cases.

When I was a young lad, I went to the Museum of Natural History on a couple of occasions, and there were particular exhibits or visual cues that stuck with me. Many years later I took my daughter on a visit to relatives in the area, and we went to the museum, and it delighted me to see them again...little triggers to happy childhood memories.

Delightful story - if you were to visit again you will find some of the exact same exhibits and dioramas from your childhood, unchanged, and unchanged for another generation before that as well.

New stuff is coming though - new insectarium will open in the spring of '23 with live creatures. The gems & minerals hall was recently renovated, and the Northwest Coast Peoples gallery was redone exquisitely. I worked there for a couple of decades and it was most incredible experience of my life. I love hearing experiences like yours.

Longtime ago, when I was a university student , I worked in a Museum of Science and Natural History in Europe. Small town , great people, very passionate in their work, most of all the coordinator was exceptional and I had a great time and learned a lot from him. I loved building dioramas , my favorite thing ever! The director was always bringing me along to his conferences and zoo and other bigger museum. I remember the time we had a private visit to one big zoo and I was able to get closer than usual to the lions. He insisted I went inside the enclosure but I didn't feel comfortable and stayed at the second gate, so there was only one fence between the lions and me. I touched the nose of a lioness that was purring like a cat. A lot of stories, nice times!

I've been trying to identify the species, it looks like a red-breasted sapsucker, perhaps? What region of the continent is this photo from?

EDIT: Red-breasted sapsucker does assume the continent is North America, which is somewhat forward of me. It would be native to the west coast of Canada, the US and Mexico.
