Every year in the second week of May the orioles appear. My favorite visitors!

For about a month they are at my jelly feeder, a dozen or more a day. They don’t have that much competition for the jelly at my place: finches, the occasional catbird…and each other. Lots of skirmishes between males for that sweet, sweet jelly. In fact, here comes the next one:

After three or four weeks, their dietary needs change to more proteins. Dessicated mealworms, in my case (live are just too expensive, and have to be kept refrigerated; for my wife, that’s a fridge too far). But then most of the birds are in on it, including and especially the starlings (blech!), so I’ve stopped trying to meet their needs at that point.

But for a glorious few weeks, I get these gorgeous birds!

As you might imagine from my effusiveness, I’ve got many oriole pics; though this one in particular doesn’t have the bird’s “attention” at the camera, I’ve always like the slice-of-life feeling of this pic.

Shot with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel T2i.

EDIT: Just reposted with a tighter crop. I’m so vain.

Almost exactly a year ago, my wife and I were in a bad auto collision. We each underwent surgery to put metal support near a joint. This morning, my wife underwent a procedure to take some of it OUT. And here it is:

Taken with my iPhone 13 mini, with some massaging in macOS Photos.

Some of the best suggestions about the presence of the quarter:

—They had run out of medical plates
—When they went to the hardware store to buy the screws, that was the change
—My wife’s ankle is now coin operated

(This was posted with my wife’s permission)

I posted this photo two weeks ago, after my wife underwent surgery to remove hardware that had been put in her leg after our car crash injuries. Today, her foot came out of the post-surgical boot and was unbandaged...and the difference is startling. She feels nothing from the accident. No poking, no prodding from the implants, no need to compensate for it...she is walking normally for literally the first time since the accident almost exactly a year ago!
