Another from the MIT Museum in Boston. Although it would have been more interesting if it was operating.

W.C. Fields
Bounce Juggling Machine
Claude Shannon
Early 1980’s

W.C. Fields is Shannon's most famous juggling device. It is a bounce juggler (meaning the ball is bounced off the ground instead of being tossed in the air) which proved easier to build. Shannon loved juggling but it did not come easily to him. The fact that it proved so challenging prompted him to undertake a mathematical analysis of juggling. This machine, like most of Shannon's devices, helped him explore the subject and provide lots of entertainment for family and friends.

I see that you like B&W pictures. It's a lovely shot. It would be nice to see the same picture in colour too. 😊

What exactly are they trying to project here?

I suppose it's a good question but I honestly wouldn't presume to know the answer. Perhaps I'll ask next time I bump into him and if so I'll let you know. FWIW I have a series of pictures that I'm intending to post here, which incedently don't include more of his paintings...
