Autumnal

As MacRy said, autumn has certainly taken hold - a few cool nights and everything turns colour. Comments always appreciated.

I like the photo, but the blurryness of the 'finger' is distracting.

I was playing around with having the foreground ripples and bush in focus , probably should have opened the lens up to maybe 5.6 or so to blur things out even more . However ... for my penance ...

Is that cropped at all? It really is a lovely shot. A 500 mm lens certainly gets you close to the action.

Thanks AFB. A small crop to frame the butterfly the way I wanted.

Yes the 500mm does allow me to get close to a skittish subject. However, with a minimum focus distance of 4m (12.5 ft) there are of course lenses that will get you much closer and with more resolved detail – subject and environment permitting. I keep forgetting to try using extensions tubes with the 500 – just for fun.

There are a lot of different ways to get to get that kind of reach but, IMO, one of the biggest advantages of a lens like the 500 is the ability to control depth of field for subject isolation. The depth of field can be so narrow that the background isn't just smooth…it disappears into a wash of colour. The flipside is that it can be tough to get enough depth of field when needed and in low light conditions.

Dont know why, but kind of like this one for some reason.

Just taking pictures of random stuff trying to make them look interesting as I am not going anywhere further than the end of the driveway for a few days.

Is that David Blaine up to his old tricks there?

One for the bikers amongst you:

Not a well-staged shot, but I had to work with where it was parked.
I met the owner of this beautiful 1976 Z1 while out riding last week. Apparently it was in a pitiful state when he first acquired it several years ago, but even under very close scrutiny it's absolutely mint now. I'd forgotten how rubbish brakes used to be back then (how did we not all end up in casualty?). The owner told me that bringing this beast to a halt requires the sort of advance planning employed when docking a ferry.

Bombed Church

You could also try the other end of the colour scale and just b&w it. Get some contrast out of those clouds and you'll have a shot looking up at an almighty church with a wrath-of-god sky lingering in the background? Either way, if you do PP it then be sure to put it up here :)

Alex

Alex, here is an attempt to PP golden hour and an ominous sky. Ignoring the poor masking attempt, I prefer the more gothic of the two. Many thanks for the suggestions to make an improvement. Comments welcomed.

Always go with what you prefer :) I'm a sucker for b&w images, as you'll see in the next few days when I get round to putting some of my own stuff up. I like what you've done in both cases though, good job.

Went out looking for leaves to make an Autumn picture for school with my 5 year old daughter today. Here is what we found.

Thanks Alex, looking forward to them - some things just suit B&W.
