Actually, I don't know that you are too far off on settings. Helicopters are tricky. They are typically against a bright backdrop, but you don't want to use a fast shutter speed, as that will freeze the props, which looks awkward, IMO. So you have to reduce shutter speed to get a better effect, which is what you have going on. You get the sense that it's moving through the air, but the bird is clear.View attachment 2271496
the cause of our commuter snarls
1/30s 500mm @ f/51 (obviously the wrong settings; grab shot)
great perspective
As my commute often involves waiting on a pier next adjacent to a heliport, I think you're right about this. When the helicopter blades are frozen, it does look odd. I also experimented with a very slow (maybe 1/6s) shutter speed on a different day, with a hovering helicopter -- the blades there just disappeared into a faint blur, which also wasn't successful.Actually, I don't know that you are too far off on settings. The 2017 fire damage was really severe. The entire Akimina Parkway drive to Cameron Lake is burned as is most of the forest bordering Cameron Lake. Waterton Townsite was about all that was saved on the west side of the Waterton Lakes. Still I had a pleasant paddle to the end of Cameron lake and back and there were some photo ops but overall rather heartbreaking. That's on my bucket list is to get back to Warteron Nation Park. The late Bob Ross called that a “happy accident.”As my commute often involves waiting on a pier next adjacent to a heliport, I think you're right about this. So maybe I should say, "yeah, I meant to do that." Or more accurately, own my mistakes, especially when they turn out.
Thank you, and ROT, which you taught me.great perspective
