From a recent trip to Waterton National Park.
Wicked contrast called for some post image intervention.

the cause of our commuter snarls

1/30s 500mm @ f/51 (obviously the wrong settings; grab shot)
Actually, I don't know that you are too far off on settings. Helicopters are tricky. They are typically against a bright backdrop, but you don't want to use a fast shutter speed, as that will freeze the props, which looks awkward, IMO. So you have to reduce shutter speed to get a better effect, which is what you have going on. You get the sense that it's moving through the air, but the bird is clear.

As my commute often involves waiting on a pier next adjacent to a heliport, I think you're right about this. When the helicopter blades are frozen, it does look odd. I also experimented with a very slow (maybe 1/6s) shutter speed on a different day, with a hovering helicopter -- the blades there just disappeared into a faint blur, which also wasn't successful.

So maybe I should say, "yeah, I meant to do that." :) Or more accurately, own my mistakes, especially when they turn out.

That's on my bucket list is to get back to Warteron Nation Park. Really pretty country out there.
The 2017 fire damage was really severe. The entire Akimina Parkway drive to Cameron Lake is burned as is most of the forest bordering Cameron Lake. Waterton Townsite was about all that was saved on the west side of the Waterton Lakes. Still I had a pleasant paddle to the end of Cameron lake and back and there were some photo ops but overall rather heartbreaking.

OTOH Glacier Park just to the South is in good shape but overly restricted during the summer months.

The late Bob Ross called that a “happy accident.”

Tools of the trade…

Nice, manual pencil work is a lost skill.
I was a draftsman 1979-1984. My 1983 work zone, (4) 4 x 8 sheet of plywood drafting tables plus all the tools of the trade. Fwiw I still have that chair in my basement office, 40 years later, worth every $. It was a group buy, 7-8 us got discount, much more comfortable than the company provided stool.
