How do you get that effect?

For example, if you look at post number 180, the flower is very focussed and everything behind it is blurred. How do you do this? Is it possible on a Nikon Coolpix 2100?

Here are 2 photos that I'm proud of. let me know what you think.

Here's some of mine. All taken with a two year old Sony CyberShot 3.2 MP camera.

This is a cool shot I took at my cousins house:

the trees and shadows one is wonderful! i even saved it so i could use it as a desktop sometime :)
if possible, if you get a chance (and remember) could you please try to take a picture of that same location in Autumn? the fallen leaves would look amazing i bet.

Wow, it sure has been a long time since I've had time to check out the photography threads on here. I just wanted to say the shots on here are getting better every time I look. Great shots everybody! :)

I'm going to throw my hat back in and post a few shots of my own. Let me know what you think, I've forgotten how fun all this is! :)

The Waterfall is just a great waterfall I have been to probably too many times named Proxy Falls. The flowers were shot along a walkway in a park where I live, and that spider just happened to jump in there at the perfect time. The one that looks like concrete was just an art piece in the same park that looked interesting.

Well I can do it on my Nikon Coolpix 5200. I use macro mode, and then change the auto-focus spot to where I want it. Easy as that!!

Hope it helps.

EDIT: Oh and by the way, I love your second pic with the shadows.

Awesome! I love your "remixes." Could you by any chance remix the one of my avatar (just the fuzzy type, soften type - I don't know what it's actually called - like the top half in the Six Flags picture) and this one of me:

This one's nifty too. Amazingly, I took it in a really dark biology room. I have to clue how all the light got there, but the flash was off, because I didn't want my teacher to see I had my camera in the middle of class!

This one was taken by me in the old part of the boys locker room at my high school. I think it's very "modern art" like. The stalls were ripped down to make way for a renovation of the area. I wish the reflection of the flash wasn't there...

You have to love this picture. It was like the second to last day of school, and we always made fun of this teacher and her keychain with the little Cardinal on it. I took this, but I didn't realize that someone was in the background making a weird face! I love how it came out blurry and the foreground is so sharp.
cummingskey.jpg

Okay, maybe not truly "this thread safe," but I think this picture speaks for itself. Please note, that isn't my hand (lots of people were like, "hey, Ryan, why are you wearing a purple ring?!"), but I did have to stick my hand out the window to get the picture.

That's all for now, I'll post some more later.

i definitely need a better camera ... :p

That first pick was really dark on my work's PC monitor, but it's stunning on my Mac! ... i couldn't even see the Closed on my wicked ViewSonics at work. :p

That building looks escher-esque; sharp and strange ... very nice. And i think i can smell that flower. :)

Here's a quick remix of one of zync's pics ... i hope that's ok zync. ;)

Definitely OK! I love what you did to the clouds! Out of curiosity, what exactly did you do with the colors? It looks like you upped the saturation. I wish I had taken that in RAW though. I need to set my 20D to capture more sat right of the bat :)

Anyway, you can always remix my pics. It's an honor, lol. It's good to be back in the company of you guys. Hopefully, MR will actually email me the next time someone posts!

I used to be very much into photography, but then I tapered off. Some of my stuff can be seen in the ooooold photography threads, if you're interested (not that it's very good, but it's there). Anyway, here is a picture I took while on my camping trip. It holds a great sentimental value to me...

Amin, those are great shots, especially the one of your wife(?) and son!

I was inspired by someone's bag shot so I figured that I would snap a few inside today since going outside means a huge temp and humidity difference and thus mucho condensation on my lens unless I leave my cam in the bag for a while.

Anyway here it is...

I was just messing with an old pic of my gf and me (yes it's me, not I :D). Figured I'd post it since I went a little crazy with it :)

There's a regular version and a tribute to Neut.

It's called 'depth of field'. If your camera has the ability to manually adjust the aperture, than you can manually control the effect.

Basically, the more wide open the lens iris is (smaller aperture number), the less 'in focus' everything behind the focal point is going to appear. Inversely, the less wide open the lens iris is (bigger aperture number), the more 'in focus' everything behind the focal point will appear. The aperture you should use really depends on the type of photography you're doing. For portraits and macro work, a lot of people like using a wide aperture because it blurs the background nicely and draws attention to the subject, which is what you're talking about on post #280.

Hope that helps!

jessica, I enjoyed those shots and appreciated your web site explaining that they were "digital infrared." Don't think I've seen such good examples before.

amin, it's so difficult to get proper lighting on near subjects and good skin tones--you did it perfectly. The squirrel on fence is a winner, too.

Nice work everyone, including excruciatingly sharp Altoids and urinals!
