My housemate's cat, Meg; at my old house in Kegworth, Debyshire, UK; June 2004 (ish). Taken with Nikon Coolpix 4500. Used an external fill flash. Sorry, EXIF data lost with original file

I use a Nikon D70, with a Nikon 18-35, 3.5, 4.5 ED lens.
Can't wait to have a 200 mm lens tough.
I am not used to shooting sports and I haven't quite figured out how to swing along the moving target without blurring the whole thing out.

Chip, what happend in Iceland, did you eat too much Pilsur's?

The Domain, Sydney CBD, 23/04/2005. It's pretty much the autumn season in Sydney, so I guess people were trying to chill out and relax in the sun. You can still do that in the winter here, IMO.

Damn I wish I had my new Nikon 18-200 lens, I could have gotten some nice shots today. ahh, got to love backorders…

Actually, I think the runners look a lot more "in focus" than the surrounding cars and buildings, and was wondering how you did that. I guess with such a small photo, it's hard to see that the runners aren't as in focus as I think they are.

The technique for others that read this post is called panning. One follows the subject and "hits" the middle while following through.

Yeah, I figured panning the camera with the runners at the centre of the frame was how he did it, but I'm still a bit surprised that it turned out so well. I have only tried it once with some skateboarders, but it didn't work out so hot. (I was trying to use manual focus, though. They ramps or whatever you call that big u-shaped "bowl" was very deep, so their distance away from me changed from 10 feet to 150 feet in a matter of a few seconds).

Is there no secret to getting good panning? Is it just steady panning movement with the subject?
