old timer... cardon cactus, Baja California

This cardon cactus (more info here..) is one of thousands in the desert of southern Baja. This guy was just off the 3 mile sand/dirt road leading to Las Palmas beach near Todos Santos.

Just picked up my first SLR today! I don't own Photoshop so I tweaked this photo a little in Graphic Converter. Not really sure what I'm doing yet, but I ran out into the yard armed with my new 50mm prime and started experimenting...

Great job with the backlight and DOF -- that 50mm is one of my favourite lenses :)

Thanks! I have had some experience with SLRs before but I'm still doing a lot of trial and error - and it's great fun. The 18-55mm kit lens is useful for wider angle shots (I haven't found a lens under $300 at a similar focal length) but the 50mm f1.8 seemed a no-brainer as it was so cheap.

Sunset on the Lake

This is my first sundown/sunset shot and I think it came out pretty cool. Took it in Maine at the edge of a lake. The colors are pretty cool and the water looks almost surreal.

This scene struck me -- with everything this guy doesn't have, he still is able to carry a water dish for his dog.

This is really an awesome picture. I guess animal lovers would appreciate this more.

freebooter inspired me to try a "bug on plant" shot. So far my best photo using the kit lens for my Rebel XT.

In the Sky

Taken yesterday en route over Europe, probably flying somewhere above France at this point. Unedited and taken with a Canon while constantly checking over my shoulder for nosey airline staff, who would have had no greater pleasure than to take the camera off me!

Spruce Goose

I wish I had a 10-20mm wideangle for this subject... but this should give a little perspective on the size of this legendary aircraft... now on display in McMinnville, Oregon.

A pair of joyous moments

Thanks -- shooting this one took me out of my comfort zone a bit, I'm still getting used to pointing a camera at strangers.

Blackadder: Great job on the focus -- you're spot on the butterfly, for me that's the hardest part of closeup work!

Anyway, here's mine for the day -- you never know what you'll find in Stanley Park!
