I was bending over in a pre-run stretch when, "Oh!," I noticed this little beggar getting wet in the rain-soaked undergrowth. I have some closer, more detailed shots, but I kind of like the flower buds framing the grasshopper, showing its habitat.
I used the flash because it was too dim to get steady, hand-held, low-iso macros. Also, flash can help isolate a subject from a busy, similarly colored background. To do again I would have used a little less exposure compensation, perhaps -1.7 or -1.3 e.v., because I had to brighten it a bit afterwards.

After hearing that the outside observation deck on the 91st floor was open, I jumped at the chance to revisit the current tallest building. Will post a handful of images taken from the observation deck, but here's just a fun assembly of 6 shots. The top 3 were taken while ascending as shown by the direction of the chevrons. The bottom 3 were taken while descending.

Taipei 101 boasts the world's fastest elevator, built by Toshiba. You can see the ascension and descension speeds. It climbs faster than it descends.

Automatic windows in the Arab Institut of Paris; they open and close according to the level of incident sunlight. Pretty sweet.

Nice picture clix. Is that the d50 that you converted?

It looks like you are having fun with it.

I might have to think about getting some IR film for my film slr.

Here is mine for today.

Post processing - I corrected the perspective a bit as the vertical bars closest to the camera were slightly skewed due to the wide angle I was using (12mm).

A team of ground personnel takes a customary bow to welcome home a JAL flight.

orig.jpg

Great shot, could have been better if all were better at timing their bow perhaps.

Amazing how customs differ among countries, and understanding customs. I remember a few years ago the president from a one of our Japanese suppliers came through our store on a visit. When it came time for my introduction, I had my business card ready.

I grasped the edges of the card and did a bow. He examined the card, and then offered his in similar fashion, which I paid the same respect. In our private moment together, he asked how did I know of the "custom of presentation of business cards". I told him that I loved the Japanese culture and customs, and tried to respect customs and such of those I met both here and abroad. He smiled.

To this day each time he visits we each give a bow before the handshake.

Never knew that JAL (and perhaps other Japanese airlines) gave this respect to an arriving airliner (at least perhaps for international flights). It would be so cool if they did this for domestic flights as well.

In the end, the feeling of this image is not lost on me. Though your caption helped.

Umbrellas are a multi-functional and ubiquitous tool here. Whether for protection from rain and sun, or as in this case for privacy.

Thanks Chip, and I agree. If I had the power to choreograph the event, the bows would have been synchronized. :) (I would also have removed the reflection of my Puma T-shirt.)

Yesterday's picture was a zoom to the top right corner. An 11x zoom lens is a truly handy device.

^^ Nice one, ksz. I like this kind of 'tower series'. I'll post a photo from the top of the Tour Eiffel soon. For today, here's the Louvre. Taken 16 September with Panasonic FX-01.

Thanks! Incidentally, when I visited the Louvre in September 2003 the pools were vacant, as were my pictures... I'd really like to re-photograph the Louvre, perhaps at dusk with some clouds and deep blues reflecting in the pool. I think I am way overdue for a return to Europe. ;) By the way, what is casting that semi-circular shadow on the front face of the palace?

I have a number of pictures from Eiffel, but I always enjoy seeing other peoples' perspectives.

EDIT: Nevermind, the shadow is of another dome.

So cool, so so COOL! I love IR pics! Maybe it's because it makes trees look like they're caked with snow. I've always though it would be fun if the melting point of snow was 70 degrees (F, of course)- at least for a week or so:) . I guess this picture is what it might look like. Wait, the lake would be frozen wouldn't it... I guess it wouldn't look any different than a normal winter shot. Dang it!
