I have been living in Belgium for the better part of 15 years, but I think I realised years ago already that trying to taste every type of beer made here is a fruitless endeavour. I just enjoy whatever comes my way.

The country is only about 33k sq km's, about the size of Israel, but there are well over 1000 different varieties of beer on the market right now, I think, at least there are no official records that I can find with those numbers. In the history of beer brewing in Belgium some suggest there have been well over 8000 different varieties.

So yesterday I was presented with these beauties. They were so good I had 5, 1 dark and 4 blondes. And this was after I had already noted how strong they were. I felt a bit thick this morning. I was actually drinking with 2 theologians in their late 70's from the Belgian seminary.

Apparently Westvleteren is the best beer in the world. It is nice, I had it, once. But I really don't think it's worth the €8 I paid for 1 at a local cafe.

The beers below cost around €2,50 each, from the brewery. I think I might put an order in, 1 case brown and 1 case blonde.

This is now the best beer I have ever had.

So without further ado:

I love Belgian beers.

Actually, I would (happily) count Trappistes Rochefort, St Bernardus, Achouffe, Westmalle, Chimay and Maredous, - among many others - as some of my favourite beers.

Got a passport?
I do (maybe more than one ;)) and have been only to Brussels sadly. This was in winter and the climate was well...what it is. The city is nice though, locals were friendly and the architecture is fascinating both medieval and modern. Food and yes beer were amazing.

Bruges is amazing - agreed - and incredibly atmospheric.

Superb history, architecture, art, tapestries, pubs, beer........

‘It’s like a fairytale or something’….. Couldn’t find a bowling alley when I was there though..

** You’d only get that if you’ve seen the film ‘In Bruges’… If you haven’t, I fully recommend it, one of my favourites.

Also one of favourite movies, I think it is the one with the most gratuitous uses of the F word. And Bruges is not a theme park as has in fact been asked, it is a real life city.

The weather in Belgium in winter, well, it's doable, but come in summer if you can. You can sit in the sun at a street side cafe until 10pm.

As they do wine tasting tours in places like California, Australia, South Africa, France, Italy and Spain, they do beer tasting tours in Belgium. And I'm not talking about pub crawls, they are actual tasting tours.

Of all the countries I could settle in (yes, I'm an imigrant), it had to be Belgium.

I'm home now for a few months, so more Belgian beer pics to follow.

The fool of Bruges....
