Just got myself a Schwinn single speed bike off of Craigslist for 200 bucks.

I just rode to get some grub, and I LOVE IT! So much better and easier than my mountain bike. No more thinking of changing gears, no more extra parts...just the ride!

:D

EDIT: I plan on swapping the handlebars to bull handle bars depending on if I can attach the breaks to them, if not then I'll opt for drop bars. Also, new pedels as well with toe straps.

I'm looking to try out clipless pedals for the first time. I think someone just needs to convince me... So close to buying a set of shimanos over the weekend. And also changing my handlebar tape to white. Any opinions? :p

Do it. I have clipless on my touring bike that I use as a commuter and it is awesome. Acceleration is terrific - I can beat cars off the line at a light, and hills are a breeze. I didn't have any problems learning - rode around a bit on the grass to get the hang of clipping in and out, and I was set. The only thing that sucks is doing errands and clacking around with bike shoes on; I have mountain shoes though, so it's not as bad as wearing road clipless.

I've never been a big fan of white tape, FWIW. Always looks dingy. If it was my bike, I'd try red tape for a bit.

Yeah, don't change it to white! Black fits so well, and white handlebar tape gets dirty too fast!

Unless you are planning on being a world class racer, I would get mountain pedals and shoes. The shoes are more comfortable, you can actually walk in them, etc, and in the casual world there is not really any disadvantage.

That said, absolutely get them, you need them to efficiently bike!

I have a pair of Look clipless and the cleats are massive. I really like them over the Shimano as I like the bigger platform when cycling, however when walking it can be a bit of a pain like you said.

The Speedplay clipless look good as it you can clip in on both sides. A lot of the pros use these. Speedplay do start quite high in terms of price compared to the other manufacturers which offer lower starting points.

I have fallen once because of my clipless, clipped out on my left foot then tried standing with the right :D

FWIW, you can get SPD pedals that are dual-sided as well as ones that have platforms. Or eggbeaters with or without platforms as well. Lots of options! I gotta agree with you on the Speedplay price, I think it's a bit ostentatious to have shoes and pedals that cost more than the rest of your bike unless you're schlepping a beater :D.

While SPD is a viable and reasonable option for somebody on a budget. To say that they're on the same level as speed plays is a bit a of reach. Yes, they both clip in from two sides making it much easier to clip in when you're taking off. However, speed plays have a much larger platform for your foot to transfer energy with and SPD have a small platform. The small platform can make a hot spot fast and I wouldn't recommend them for extended rides where fit is ultra critical. Not saying they don't work though. Plenty of people can do just fine with them.

Oh, I'm not saying they're on the same level as Speedplay pedals, not at all. It's just that SPDs and eggbeaters have a bit lower buy-in price than SPs, that's all. As for the rest, it's all personal preference, how well your shoes fit and how stiff your soles are. The best thing to do is try different types and see what works for you.

Anyways, enough about pedals. Moar bike pics!

Just picked up a 2010 Triton by Gary Fisher and put a couple hundred miles on it. Unfortunately there is something going on with the chain that the shops have not been able to fix. I've got an offer to trade it in for a Fuji fixer.

I am also experimenting with the clipless system but so far it has been a disaster. Talk about pain! It may not be as efficient but I don't get hot feet with my old walking shoes. And that is after a fitting. I still have numb feet two days later. I tried Specialized shoes with Shimano 105s.

Anyone using their iPhone as a bike computer? Which app? I'd like one that can track laps.
