Still the same 1994 Jamis out and about in abq. Considering converting it to drop bars if I can figure out a way to do it without changing the drive train.

That saddle looks unbelievably uncomfortable in that picture. Have you thought about leveling it out?

Yeah, that saddle has been a pain. Got it when I started riding again after my back injury and the original had totally disintegrated. It was the cheapest that I could find since I wans't even sure my back would take riding. Level it pushes me forward. But in the pic it is too far back. Been adjusting it. Starting to shop for a new one.

Visit a Specialized brand carrying shop. They have a handy device for measuring width of sit bones, most important metric for saddle as this is what you want bearing weight. Too narrow and pressure in soft nether regions, too wide and thighs rub.

Then they have a pretty thorough catalog of saddles of varying shape to suit casual to racer, from thin to thick padding, etc.

1)Thick padding can sink into skin putting pressure on nerves causing numbness.
2)Thin padding initially beats your ass... But your body will adapt, this is what most endurance cyclist use.

This picture was taken about 2 hours before a car hitting me & destroying this bike. Sad thing was, it was the first day of riding her. At least I was fine.

Got a new wheel set (matte black), orange tire for the front, orange grips fro the bullhorns. Removed rear brake.

Love this bike!

Ready to be built up. Black bar tape, blue hudz. Souls look something like this except with black tape. Plus I raced this weekend for that last time on my p2c before the frame gets replaced under warranty (cracked seat stay)

Picked up a Cannondale SuperSix 5 105 last night
And the wife picked up the Synapse

We are stepping up from the pair of Cannondale Quick 4's we have

Super fancy. Is it true that a halfway decent road bike should be about $2k? I've seen this particular model when shopping with a friend (if I recall) and some sales guy was saying that anyone getting into riding (road bikes) should be prepared to spend $2k at the very minimum.

Probably, if you are getting carbon, but that isn't entirely necessary (although some would disagree)
I was very close to getting the Cannondale CAAD10 5 105 which is a very light aluminum bike with excellent reviews and it lists for about $1500 I think
We buy at REI and get 10% back at the end of the year because we are members

Disclaimer: I am no expert, and we have only been riding a short while but have done a fair amount of reading and researching

Ah, makes sense if you're stepping into carbon. From what I've read and the practical knowledge a family member has, it does sound legit.

With a road bike, I presume lightest is best, no doubt.
Nice bike, both of them. You two sound like you will enjoy them for a very long time.

Whats best is fit and comfort. It the bike fits and is comfy you'll be faster and ride longer. There is a lot of crap info on the web and roadies eat it up because it means they get to buy new stuff. The lightest part of the bike rider package is the bike, loose weight off you and the package get lighter faster but that's not good for epeen. There is one place weight makes a truly noticeable difference and that is wheels, more specifically rims and tires the lighter the rims and tires are the faster they spin up. Aeros can make a difference on the right course if you're fast enough.

I'll stop now.

No, please ... keep going. :D
But I agree in terms of what you're saying. I'm one who rides rarely and yet knows more than I should. It comes from just reading and then discussing with people who are avid riders.

Even still, I have two bikes and one sits and collects dust. I need a new quick release on my back tire (long story how that even got lost). I've been considering pulling it down and getting it back up and running. It's just a lowly specialized hard rock where I had hybrid tires put on it when I moved to the other coast. I did less rocky trails and more paved paths. It made sense.

Hardrocks are fine just not expensive 'tis best not to mix quality and cost in the bike world. Super Record is not thousands better than Athena I'm of the opinion that if you "needed" go fast uber parts your team would be buying them for you everyone else is trying to buy speed.."Don't buy upgrades ride up grades"--Eddy Merckx

If you riding on a bike path you will not get anymore pleasure riding at a running pace on and multi-thousand bicycle that you will on a thrift store bike maybe even less if it scares you to scratch it. People here have complexes of the tiniest thing on their MBP can you imagine there fear if it costs twice as much?

Anyway go spend $15 on a quick release, $10 on some new tubes, and while your at the shot sit on one of those new hi tech a$$ measurers ti find out what width saddle you need and make sure the one at home is consistent with your rear, if not most shops have tryout saddles try a couple and see how they work. If you can't find a happy place find a fitter pay them the $100 to fit you to your bike a then ride. A fitter and a good saddle are truly worth the money.

You generally don't need to tell women this but don't let your ego get in the way of the riding if something doesn't feel right it's not STOP this is especially true getting back into it. The key is to ride consistently not necessarily fast.

That's good info. I didn't know you could be fitted for a saddle nowadays. I'll check that out because as a female, I know the pain of riding on an ill-fitted saddle.

Shops that are authorized to sell Specialized bikes will often have saddle fitting available. They call it the ass-o-meter. It's not a joke, that is what most of the dealers call it. Get fitted, and check out their saddles. It is all I will ride, even on a non Specialized bike.

Yup. My mission today is to find a shop here that will measure my butt for me.

I like the saddle that came with my bike, but if I could find something even more comfortable, i'm all about it.

I don't know if you wear bike shorts, Jessica, but they have made a world of difference for me.

They do for some but for me they cause more problems than the solve. A few years ago I discovered Brooks, a B17 normal is right for me no shorts and no special cycling clothes.

It would be awesome if I could find a seat that enables me to go without the padded shorts.

If i'm riding for more than like 5 miles, I will get numb in all the wrong places, so it makes it hard for me to actually commute on my bike.

Thats where the proper saddle comes in. Saddles are a personal thing even more so with women. From what I understand women are more sensitive to saddle bar drop too. I'm not a woman so I an only repeat things I hear, but I do know your sensitive bits shouldn't be getting numb. If I were you I'd get my a$$ measured to, people no kidding love these a$$ measurers. Shorts shouldn't compensate for a bad fit and uncomfortable saddle they should compliment correct fit and saddle. This in my experience is the number one reason people stop riding bikes. They're uncomfortable and think they need special fruity colored tight clothes to be comfortable. I ride everyday if it's not raining to work, to get groceries, to get a beer. I own one jersey and one pair of shorts.
