Is it just me or does the bezel on the matte looks misplaced?

It's you.
If I want to see beautiful sculpture I can go to a museum :p
If I need to work - matte FTW!

P.S. Yeah I was infatuated with this whole black thing, but using '07MBP it grows back on me quickly ;)))

The glossy and matte screens are the exact same LCD panels, one just has glass over it. Therefore any amount of grainyness would be more from looking straight into the panel rather than having the glass buffer to create an illusion of smoothing...

I have seen them in person and the matte looked very nice.

This is what i thought too until i took the glass out of an aluminum imac. Underneath the glass of the imac was not a matte screen like you would find on the white imacs, but a glossy one. I couldn't believe it was a glossy screen covered with a piece of glass... wow!

I don't know if the MBPs are the same tho'.

Why is this surprising? If they put glass over a matte screen you would get the worst of both worlds, a very reflective screen and slightly less pop to the colors.

Honestly I don't understand why Apple is putting glass on their screens, all it does is add weight and extra reflection. Only plus side is that people can't poke the screen as it is protected.

actually the glass itself isn't heavy or the amount of weight it would add to the mbp as you may think.

Absolute and complete rubbish. The glass panel adds excessive weight to the body and in fact is causing the well known 'loose hinge' feature.

Actually, it's a different type of hinge than previously. if you've used one, you may notice that repositioning the screen is a lot smoother and it stays wherever you place it, doesn't "Bounce back" at all. As a side effect, the screen falls at an angle. No doubt the glass's weight adds to this, but don't expect the problem to be solved by taking away the (very thin) glass.

Indeed... I removed the glass of an iMac, and was delighted to see much less reflections (but still too much in a normal room with windows behind me).

A matte screen is still the better choice. That's why I can't replace my mother's Mini (+Dell 2407WFP) with a glassy iMac. The Dell is just so much better for daily use (and you can actually adjust its colors and white point).
Its colors don't shift like crazy when you're not exactly in front. Now if only there was something like a "screen-less iMac" tower : the underpowered 2009 Mini is a joke. The iMac guts are exactly what I'm after.

Now back to topic :)

Stopped by the store tonight and they had a 17" matte on display. After I waited for the gaggle of idiots browsing Target's website to be done with it I had a chance to pour myself over it.

In a word? Stunning.

It stands out from the glossies. I didn't bother taking pictures because the camera on my Blackberry would have done it no justice.

My first order of business was to feel the black rubber bezel. Judging by the pictures I've seen I thought it was going to be flimsy; not at all. It's firm and strong and you really don't notice it. It's a lovely afterthought. And the black hinge fits in very well.

The display is beautiful and CRISP - none of this grainy nonsense that some have been entertaining. Given, I didn't have the chance to watch any videos or anything like that but the screen just looks proper and wonderful.

All in all it feels and looks like the ultimate culmination of the uMBP.

Can't wait to get my 15" next week. :apple:

A Mac Mini's guts (less 400-660MHz dependent on config and HD/RAM capacity), are the same as the entry level iMac... DDR3 ram, Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForce 9400M Bluetooth, Wifi, Mini DisplayPort, SuperDrive, fw800... I was actually pretty pleased with 2009's update

I sure hope the 15" doesn't have a floppy, loose hinge like the 17" does. :(

Rice, why do you keep posting unfounded information as gospel? Look at the techrestore reviews - they report that removing the glass decreases the weight noticeably.

I was disappointed because i was hoping to remove the glass and find a matte screen. :)

Apple adds the glass for curb appeal in order to attract more consumers who don't know any better. (sorry for the cheeky statement.. .lol) The glass is great for watching movies, but everyday working and reading? No way.

I had not problems with poking the screen myself - not that I really poked it.

The matte screen is awesome!

I don't mind the black rubbery material surrounding the black bezel. In fact, I like it. It makes the bezel match the keyboard so that the black of the keyboard doesn't look completely out of place. In other words, the black rubbery stuff around the bezel ties the keyboard and the rest of the machine together.

First time noticing the black rubber border. Does anyone have the MBP 4.1 as well as the new matte 15? Would love to see a comparison.

Apologies if this has already been answered but does anyone know why apple does not include the matte option for the 13inch model? Also, do you think it will be quite some time before they do offer this option for the 13inch?

Cheers

They don't include the matte option for the 13.3 to make you upgrade to the 15! (just as they were hoping everyone would upgrade to the 17)

I doubt they would make a matte option for the 13". You might want to consider Techrestore.
