The matte is actually looking pretty nice :)

Someone did however, bring up a good point - that that was the model (the glossy MBP being compared with) before they introudced the newer screens. ...perhaps the reason for it appearing darker?

I do appreciate the individual for taking the time to take photos for all of us - but, I'm still nervous to take the matte route with my order (like I said, I can't view one from where I am).

Curious to know if the matte looks great viewing videos and how bad if at all the grainyness is...hopefully zero.

I wonder why Apple didn't release the anti-glare versions with a glossy black bezel, I prefer the silver but it doesn't seem like it would be that ugly to me. They get to keep a uniform look across their line-up this way.

MBA is silver so the black is hardly across the line-up.

My matte MBP 15'' has just been delivered by UPS.

Here is the panel data:
Manufacturer: 00000610
Modell: 00009CB1

I could not find any imformation about this panel type.

Congrats! Can you post photos of it running video or a game and perhaps a vivid photograph?

Well I was thinking about their Macbook Pro line-up but the LED cinema display, imacs and ipod touch/iphone all have a black surround so it's the MBA that is the odd one out.

Not a complaint, just wondering...

Since no one has yet done so, I've taken the liberty of taking this photo of the Anti-Glare UMBP at the Regent Street Apple Store today. As you can see it is the same bezel as the 17" model but I think it looks better on the 15". The screen is amazing guys especially after watching some video on it. Well worth the £40 extra - thinking of snapping one up myself so my dad can have his glassy one back :D

This looks fake somehow. The trackpad is almost square instead of rectangular, and the distance from the keyboard to the front of the chassis is too long.

The problem with this nice aluminum bezel is really the ugly black rubber band surrounding it, and the black hinge (just look at theclosed laptop : the only distracting, black accent is the hinge). A seamless grey look would look gorgeous even with the black keyboard, just look at the MacBook Air !
I think the black keys are a very sound idea to avoid the keys wearing off with use, and revealing the ugly colored plastic they're made of.

About the black bezel looking better : nothing prevents you from having a shiny plastic sheet cut to the right size, and sticking it over the alu bezel. Provided it's thin enough, it would work.

I currently have the glossy MBP and except in my dark bedroom, it's a nightmare to use in bright places. At first I wanted to get a custom-cut alu bezel, so I could remove the glass and hide the innards (probably voiding my warranty in the process, which is why I backed off).

But if you want a black bezel so hard, you could just opt for a black anodized alu bezel instead of the bare metal one... and being matte, it would compliment the matte screen nicely. Metal cutting companies often offer a choice of materials, and anodized black is one of them.

Perspective was used by artists since the 15th century. Have you ever been to school ? you're seeing the effects of a wide angle lens that makes objects appear "stretched" near the edges, as opposed to a telephoto lens that compresses perspective and would have given you a rectangular trackpad.

Knowledge is power, ignorance is bliss. I'm sure the poster had nothing better to do than fake an in-store pic :)

no need to be pompous pulling yo schoolin. Just let him know he's an idiot, it's more e-courteous and makes you less of a douchebag.

I saw the matte 15'' at the Socal Irvine Spectrum Apple store yesterday night and the screen, though it wasn't calibrated, and though the stores have nasty limelights that makes the display almost as stupid as comparing displays at the bestbuy HDTV wall, I felt somewhat disappointed in the clarity. I think its only because I'm coming from a 1900x1200. I went to the anti-glare 15s and felt the same thing. Just looked milky and the pixels looked a bit too spread... But definitely, the glare being gone in the matte made me much less annoyed. And in person, the matte 15'' doesn't look that bad? lol.

So whats the current verdict? Matte screens better without grainyness (ala early 08 MBP) and great colors or "its ok, just glad theres no glare" ???

Damn the matte version looks so damn sexy with the all silver bezel - the way it should have been.

I am seriously contemplating selling my MBP which is only 4 months old in order to get the matte version. I'm sick of reflections - I had the matte screen on the previous gen MBP for 2 years and loved it. Got the glossy version and after day 1 I instantly regretted it and wished there had been a matte version then.

Err haven't you been following the thread? There is no graininess and anyone who has seen a 15" matte in the flesh is a convert.

Also they look damn sexy in silver. :D

One last question, in your opinion which do you prefer? Just curious. :p

Alright, first full day of use done and I can say a bit about the laptop. Much of this will be simply a comparison of the original unibody release from October of last year and the mid-2009 revision.

The machine feels marginally lighter than my older glassy unibody MacBook Pro. The screen does not exhibit the floppy screen that my other laptop does and it reclines to the same degree as the glossy model. The computer runs cooler than the other one and the keyboard is a bit quieter than the older revision (in my opinion).

As for the screen, the matte display has a nice uniform backlight with no visible bleed at the bottom or side. Black levels are above-average for a matte screen, it's not as dark as the glossy display but that is to be expected. Watching a widescreen movie would not be an issue and colors are crisp. Colors actually do seem to "pop" a little bit more that even the glossy display I used to have, however Apple did boast of "greater color gamut reproduction" on this revision. Overall, I'm really pleased with it.

The silver bezel looks great and takes me back to the days of the older MBP which I actually really liked. As others have noted, the black rubber isn't the most attractive, but it's not distracting and serves its purpose to keep a seamless, latchless design, and to keep the keys from touching the display.

Battery life was astounding compared to my older MacBook Pro (6700 mAH vs. 4200 mAH). With a matte display, I was able to keep the backlight lower and actually got five and a half full hours of use with about 15% left on the battery. During this time, backlight was at about 40% with WiFi on and connected, keyboard illumination on at times.

So, as for which one is better. If I had to say which display I liked better in ideal conditions, it would be the glossy. It offers a really pleasing image and rich colors. Also, the black border does look quite nice. But in day to day use where I need to be able to use my laptop anywhere and don't want to squint, move away from windows, or tilt the screen awkwardly just to browse my Lightroom catalog or create an Excel sheet, I will choose the matte display. For that reason, I'm in love with this laptop. The matte display and dramatically better battery have solved my sole complaints about the original unibody MacBook Pro.

Now, about the removal of the ExpressCard slot... (shakes fist)

Could we get some pictures of it with the screen off?

Also how about some nice, clear pictures of both machines in their entirety, with the glossy screen cleaned off nicely for a good comparison?

Thanks

But, then you said that the Glossy was preferred for the colors and etc. Which is it? You praise the matte for having better color, but then choose the glossy for colors?

the most important question for me regarding matte - IS IT GRAINY? i know the previous mbp screens as well as other laptop matte screens had this issue with lcd screens had this issue before the new screens in uMBP screens. so with the new screens with matte - is the problem (grainy) now gone?

can someone provide ACTUAL good photos of a uMBP for us to see with a matte screen? because every photo so far has shown that it has grainy issues still...:(

this would definetely aid in my purchase decision. thank you.

I don't know if it has Zero grain, but it is markedly less grain/sparklyness than the 23'' ACD
