I can't get over the macro—then again, I'm coming from an iPhone 12 Pro Max, so I've never taken cell-phone shots like this. And these are just regular snapshots, in low light, HEIC compression with Live Photo on.

Have they been this good before, on the iPhone 13 & 14?

Update: tried to post with camera metadata—how is that done?

Macro photography is my favorite. This also brings back memories of when I would save wheat pennies for a friend.

Not loving it, won’t focus on the stars like old phones. IPhone 15 pro max:

It should… try again without touching the screen to force focus, the iPhone should focus to infinity. If you didn’t touch the screen & this is the result, then maybe try touch to focus… Was this handled or tripod?

Night mode is wild. It was pitch black outside and it looks like this picture was taken during the day. Detail could be better though, it’s doing weird things with the ground especially on the right side.

That’s normal with night mode and high ISO. My 14 PM does this. It’s due to lack of light and details are difficult to render. Deeper shadows on the right. If you put the iPhone on a tripod and let it expose for 30 seconds, it will probably look better.

I am quite familiar with the camera interface yes :) On my 14 pro max I am successful every time next to the iPhone 15Pmax.

It's a shame that almost every site either downsamples or makes you reduce the file size. It's hard to see the full resolution and quality of these shots.
That has been my one issue here as well MR limits my photo sizes so seems they never look (over the years ) like they do originally not sure there is a feature to help with that or not here.

A steady hand and shooting in ProRAW can yield even better results.
See my 12 Pro Max example below (shot handheld):

ProRAW with focus/exposure lock processed in LR mobile in less than 2 minutes.
I have no doubt you (and the 15PM) can give superior results with some experimentation.

Is anyone else finding the pictures much softer and less sharp compared to older models? Especially indoors. I feel like it’s much harder to get a less blurry photo than before. I definitely don’t remember my 14 pro having images as soft as my 15 pro is producing.

I know the software is doing less sharpening than before but in general, focus seems to be a bit of an issue.

Inside with ok light the selfie camera is not great vs my 14pm. Maybe it is my phone but I do know the changed the sharpening methodology.

The back cameras are totally fine

It’s not softer, it’s actually sharper with more detail.

The reason why you felt it was softer is because previous iPhones shot at 12mp whereas the 15 Pro’s shoot at 24mp.
