She didn't mind iOS. She didn't like the XR at all. Her complaints were things a lot of us were worried about when Apple abandoned small phones. Both complaints are centered on size. It doesn't fit in her pocket, it's too heavy, and she didn't like FaceID.
So, when I bought that stolen Pixel 3 (I didn't know it was stolen), the phone caught her eye. She said something like "Maybe if you like it I can get one". For my wife, that's about as close as she gets to saying "I want that right now". So, we ordered the Pixel 3 for her and it arrived last week.
She likes the size a lot better. The OS is mostly the same, honestly. She loves the App Drawer and being able to only put the apps she wants on her home screen. She likes the defaulting to Google services out of the box, which matters. She's a little unsure about the battery, but overall she still loves the device.
Probably the most interesting thing about the process is the way my wife realized she was just "dealing with" a bunch of iOS features. The obvious ones are the following
- Siri: She hated Siri. "I never use Siri". She was blown away by the Google Assistant on Android. She dictated a text to me including the term "Dom Perignon" and was amazed it read it back perfectly.
- Notifications: She was a little weirded out by notification at first, but after getting used to it, she loves the icons being visible both on top of the screen as well as on the AOD.
So, overall she seems really happy with the device, which makes me a very happy husband. She kind of had the same sentiment I had when I mostly left the Apple ecosystem. But she was just so unhappy with her XR, it just felt like it was time to move on.
