I chose to just go back to my X. I just can’t get accustomed to Android :(
That’s what happened with me and the Galaxy S8. I’m hoping when I try the Pixel, it will be a different story, but I’m doubtful, especially when I read things like this.

What did you not like about the Pixel, especially since it is stock Android?

Its actually quite silly on what my tipping point was. It was the reddit apps.
I have this weird personality quirk where I have this need to understand the settings menu thoroughly. All the high rated reddit apps on android (joey, sync, etc) were just mind numbingly complex in terms of customization options. How big do you want the main title? How about the small title? You like blue usernames? Or maybe comic sans font for the body with a Helvetica subreddit title. Needless to say I was having a brain aneurysms trying to comb through everything.

That's when I realized, I just need a phone that I can surf, youtube, and take calls lol.

Love my 3 XL so far but those of you wanting to find a watch to replace your Apple watch you are in for a rude awakening lol. I've done a ton of research on Android watches and nothing compares to the Apple watches in my opinion. I'm not an apple homer or anything but if I do go back to an iPhone and abandon the 3 XL this might be the reason. Still looking for a watch and missing my Apple watch.

Interesting take, and for me, the only thing I use my AW for is to read notifications and adjust the volume of my music. I use it when running, but pretty much anything out there will do that. What do you miss specifically about the AW?

Yeah I'm still wearing my Apple Watch even though my main SIM is in my Pixel 3 and the watch syncs with my iPhone 8 that now usually stays in my backpack or at home.

I'm waiting for SnapDragon Wear 3100 based watches to become available here, as I'm not going to waste my money on the aging SnapDragon Wear 2100 watches at this point.

If it weren't for Apple's current Euro pricing and insistence on offering FaceID only, I might be tempted to go back to the iPhone, but as it stands I do like the Pixel 3 quite a bit and I'm willing to see what the next generation of CPUs brings to WearOS.

It seems that there are a few using the 3100 out there currently (Fossil Q Connect, I think it's called), but some don't have GPS, and some do. . .it seems difficult to get one that has all of the things you want.

I just find the AW4 to be a better overall experience. It's more intuitive, much faster, more seamless experience, and I much prefer AW UI. And it may not be important to all but I greatly prefer the design of the Apple watch including all the different band options.

You're not wrong about that, certainly. I would prefer a more traditional looking watch if one were out there. There are a few hybrids that aren't too terrible, but again, trying to find one that has all the features I would like is proving difficult.

The Fossil Sport seems to have GPS and NFC, but it hasn't arrived in Finland yet. I hope that one or some other 3100 watch becomes available over here as well soon.

honestly, this is what's keeping me on the iPhone Xs Max this phone season. Yes, the phone is fantastic and the best iOS device I've used and the changes / fixes to HDR in the camera make it phenomenal. But my AW 4 is leaps and bounds better than anthing I've tried on Android wear (high end and low end), Tizen (gear s3 frontier), and fitbit (ionic). I just can't give this watch up so I'm then stuck using iOS only... which is fine but a tech nerd and android enthusiast has me itching to pickup something else ;)

Nice pick up! You’re kind of in the same boat as me. I like my iPhone (on an X), but the prices for upgrading are just insane. I don’t see how me getting a new iPhone with AppleCare+ should run me $1400! Then if I want an Apple Watch with it, that’s an extra $430!

But one of the things holding me back has been the lack of a good watch. I’m actually looking at the LG W7, because it’s $220 at B&H right now. I just want something that gives me calls, texts and calendar. Don’t really want all the other bells and whistles.

Let us know how it goes!

I'd hold off on the W7. It's missing a lot of features ("Watch W7 has no heart rate monitor, no external speaker, no NFC, and no standalone GPS capability. Some may also be concerned that it has no Snapdragon Wear 3100...") but is very heavy on price (even in it's discounted state). The traditional hands get in the way even when trying to get out of the way. Reviews aren't pretty. DL just dropped there's today: https://www.droid-life.com/2018/12/17/lg-watch-w7-review/

I wouldn’t get an android wear watch, if I were to give up my Apple Watch I would for a Samsung Gear Watch. Last years models are at a reduced price now and have true Samsung Pay (new model has NFC only).

If you want a cheap Android watch as a feeler, get the Ticwatch E. It's on sale for just over $100, feels a little cheap but is smooth and has most of the features you would want in a everyday smartwatch/fitness tracker besides NFC.

So, folk, I would like to change from the iPhone X to the Google Pixel 3:

Is there someone that made this and can tell me about the experience with the Google phone compared to the iPhone / iOS? Which is for you "better"?

Yep, found myself really enjoying the pixel 3 but the iPhone XS max’s Camera was nearly as good (minus night shift) and I really truly missed my AW.

My wife and I went from years of iPhones to 2 new Pixel XLs (Fi) a few weeks ago. The transition has been smooth. Not as exciting as new tech in the past. But as platforms (and people) mature, this is normal I think. We like boring.. lol

Battery life was poor during the first several days, but this problem went away on its own after setup and syncing was complete. Now they both seem to be superior to our old iPhones, (7 plus and 8 plus) with regards to battery life.

We really appreciate the Always On Display (AOD). And we really like being able to organize the home screen as we see fit. Neither of us have any interest in having a phone without these features again.

The apps we use are all basically the same. Nothing to comment on here really. Equal. No complaints or surprises.

The settings are just as messy as iOS settings are.

The ringtones are inconsistent & quieter, and we've both missed some calls and texts without really understanding how it happens. We will work this out as we go, either with third party ringtones or figuring out if it's just user error on our part. The volume and notification controls are still pretty new to us really.

We both brought our Apple Music over with the AM app. Works great.

We share our location with each other on Google Maps, which is superior to Apple's Find My Friends for this purpose. Much more intuitive.

The speakers are better on the Pixels. Not a feature we use often, but the improvement is nice.

Speech recognition was poor enough with iOS & Siri, that we seldom bothered with it. The few times I've tried it on the Pixel so far, there were much fewer errors. Moving forward I intend to use it more often than I did with iPhone. Neither of us have bothered with virtual assistants before. The Pixels may change that.

The camera is a lot of fun! Still learning with it, but so far it's been great. Crazy ability with night sight.

Neither of us have missed iMessages too much, but the features would be welcomed if android gets to it someday.

The pixels feel a little lighter in weight. It takes a little getting used to, but not a negative.

That's all I can think of right now. Hope it helps

Random thought of the day:

Nothing makes me miss my iPhone more than when my wife texts me a video. Seriously comes across about as good as when I took video on my 2004 flip phone. I know there's alternatives to share the video but it's quite ridiculous in almost 2019 .

I know RCS will fix this but I'm thinking RCS won't be universal across all carriers/devices for 5+ years .

Agree, me and my wife now send via Google photos links/shared albums so we can see in good quality.

yep, I hate that too. My wife and I use Google Photo share as well but have been using 3rd party messaging apps more and more. We used to use Allo (and I finally got her family who all have iPhones to use it too when sending stuff to us) but now we use WhatsApp when sharing quick videos (since Allo is being "sent out to pasture"). I got all the iPhone users in both our families to use WhatsApp for video sharing but every now and then, they come across as MMS and it sucks so much! RCS has so much promise but seems to be getting mucked up by carriers ATM.

The RCS implementation is such a mess. I don’t know anyone who owns an Android, so RCS is dead in the water for me and many others, though this doesn’t matter since I still have an iPhone. Also, it bothers me that RCS does not have end-to-end encryption since it goes through carriers.

RCS will only be successful in the U.S. if Apple agrees to utilize it since most U.S. iPhone users use only iMessage and do not/will not download any third party messaging apps. Most/all countries outside of the U.S. and Canada largely use WhatsApp and other third party messaging apps.
[doublepost=1545160914][/doublepost]For anyone looking to buy right now: Best Buy has the Pixel 3 discounted by $300.

The bold is false. If all the android manufacturers support RCS it will be successful.

If Google came up with a native Android iMessage equivalent, that might kill RCS.

How is it false? I'm not denying it won't be successful *between Android and Android* (even this success will take a few years to be achieved), but it won't be successful between Android and iOS unless Apple implements RCS, which probably won't happen for a long while, if ever. Having an Android with RCS won't matter if most/all of your contacts have an iPhone without RCS capability.

Google will never come up with an iMessage equivalent. RCS is Google's encryption-less solution.
