At this point in time, no one, including Google, should be seriously concerned with Samsung splintering off with their own OS. This hasn't happened in all the years Google has been creating smartphones starting with the Nexus line -- what is that now, something like ten years?

And this reeks of yet another excuse for Google's poor hardware decisions.

Google has decided to make hardware. They've been testing pop-up stores and now may even have a proper retail store. They make other good hardware (Google Home Max, for example). Even when the day comes that they make good smartphone hardware, they'll still be known as Google the software/AI company and search giant.

None of this has to dictate that Google should make mediocre hardware and design. And continuing to argue for it is as folly as arguing, for example, that Samsung's slow software updates can be excused away because they're primarily a hardware company.

Google is already competing directly with OEM partners. What we're saying is, they should compete better.

Don’t think you can claim google is competing with oem partners, if the are only selling the pixel in 6-9 markets globally.

Around 100,000 units of each model in each country isn’t competing.

If google wanted to be serious, Samsung mobile would be in trouble. But they are not so.....

Yes but if it didn’t work for Nokia the largest phone company at the time and Microsoft, what makes you think Samsung can pull it off?

Nokia was too big when iOS was launched and their internal politics and corporate architecture means they ignored the new touch based OS movement and Microsoft took too long to turn around after Steve Ballmer laughing at the first iPhone. Those were corporate blunders.

I’m hoping Samsung has learnt being THE MOST SUCCESSFUL Android OEM to date.

This was absolutely untrue for the nexus line. Nexus devices were NOT for consumers. They were more of baseline products to showcase the latest Android had to offer and for developers to take advantage and test their apps on vanilla android devices. That’s why nexus line up has always been cheaper compared to the average flagship android devices at that point.

Only recently Google has stated to price the pixel lineup as flagship models and focussing on things like camera and processors etc.

Ps. Even though nexus devices were sold by Google, they always had the OEM branding on them.

Part of competing better should be more availability, for sure.

Google states there could be three reasons for the slow down. Two are software related. One is hardware. I wonder what the hardware related issue could be. The processor? RAM? Something else...?

And you're right. That is embarrassing for Google and Android if a first-time Android user experienced this. The Pixel line is supposedly the cream of the crop of Android software experience. Cue eye roll.

Whatever it is, I hope they can fix it. Last night I was pressing a button on screen trying to get it to do something. It wasn't until a restarted the phone that it finally started to work again.

A very interesting video on the same topic we were discussing here recently.

I was just going to post this. It’s very interesting. Perhaps Samsung are moving on. To be fair it is feasible because they started long before samartphones and make so many products. I doubt they would put all their eggs in one basket.

Does anyone actually have a serious interest in this device?

I'm not a fan of what we've been seeing with the thing. I almost want to call it frankenstein iPixel due to the fact that it looks like a stitched together iPhone pixel monster with neckbolts alongside the notch

Maybe there will be an actual pixel ultra or something. This thing...? o_O

Yeah, with a notch and chin that large, and probably Verizon exclusivity, I’ll be skipping it. Been very disappointed in the Pixel line thus far, while having stock android and quick updates is very appealing, I just can’t justify the pricing with the hardware they’re using compared to Samsung and Apple.

If there is a serious threat that Samsung would leave Android, then all the more reason Google needs to do hardware better.

Can't blame either of you for how you feel. Google's making bad decisions. They're making precisely the decisions that would turn people away.

Yeah I am interested still.
I look for a phone with a decent camera, good software experience (clean) and one that isn't too big to hold comfortably and the regular Pixel 2 was that phone and it is looking to be the case with the regular 3.

It's also been nice to upgrade a regular Pixel XL to the P beta and I like the updates that Google do deliver on each month.

That means more to me than 6gb of ram, a phone too big to hold, one that slows down after a week, never gets updated and has a curved screen which makes screen protectors impossible.

We all have different priorities with phones. That's why the Note 9 is absolutely not my bag. But that's all I'll probably say on the Note 9. Don't need to be in the thread repeating it every day to get the point across.

Roll on October. :)

Barring any unforeseen critical mistakes with the regular Pixel 3, that will probably be my next. I gave Samsung my money for 4-5 years, but I'm ready to fully lean into Google, with the camera + Photos + unlimited backups experience being the leading reason.

So I'd be lying if I said I was no longer interested. I'm with you. Can't wait for October.

Same here. I will be highly interested in the iPhone X Plus, but if in 8-12 months, the Pixel 3 Plus has a better camera and is 30-40% cheaper then the decision will be very easy for me.

Another Pixel 3 XL leak

DlDTTPdXsAA3mUd.jpg
Doesn’t look like it has 2 front cameras as some have suggested. I’m assuming that’s the ear piece / speaker in the middle of the notch? If they could have raised that a little, there wouldn’t be a need for such a deep notch.

I’m still looking forward to seeing if they’ve managed to improve the camera on the 3. It’s the one thing they really have to nail.

Another Pixel 3 XL leak

DlDTTPdXsAA3mUd.jpg

Dat bottom chin...

With the black navigation bar, the bottom chin looks even more ridiculous than it has to be. Again, gestures should have really gotten rid of that bottom bar.

And for the top status bar, this also more or less reaffirms that it'll just be a thicker bar to fill the ears of the notch. What a waste of space.

The entire front -- both in hardware and software -- of the Pixel 3 XL is just a mess of bad decisions compounded on top of each other.
[doublepost=1534786581][/doublepost]Here's an iPhone X in comparison. Let's not pretend the iPhone X isn't ugly with its own long notch and thick borders all around, but by comparison, the 3 XL looks horribly imbalanced, like the entire screen experience just got shoved upwards awkwardly.

The genius of the X is that Apple kept the borders, while thick, uniform all around.

I mean, we'll have better comparisons when the 3 XL goes official, but it's not too early to say that Google really done messed up the front here.

I can't figure out what going on with the materials around the side...looks it might be a case but also looks like a thin one? The stainless steel transition to black on the side has me puzzled.

Edit: Looks like it's just reflections playing tricks on me because here's a picture of the back. So yeah, leak confirmed.

The back and sides do look a little more well-rounded this time around. I think the Pixel 2 is a little too square-y.

There are so many nice-looking devices available today, just none with stock Android. All Google had to do was make a Note 9 size device with thin bezels and stock Android. IMO the Pixel 3 XL is the worse-looking device created in the last few years. I mean, thinking back to the Nexus 6 -- it was large, but it was a nice looking device. The only thing I would have changed on it is to make the bezels proportionate.

Why can't they just stick with a tried-and-true design with new internals?
[doublepost=1534802759][/doublepost]I loved the styling of the Moto X and the Nexus 6. If I was in charge of things, I'd keep those two sizes/styling and just update the chips yearly. I don't know why they have to redesign the devices yearly just to make them faster and uglier.

Too many people getting carried away here with the notch. Once you use it for a week you won’t even notice it.

I won't get used to it, because I'd never even purchase something with a notch that size. While it won't affect usability, I couldn't imagine having to look at that thing all day. And when playing games I don't see how you could look away.

The complaint is still valid, though. Why should one have to get used to something? It's just disappointing that someone approved this.
