I just want more Pixel 3 leaks. I'm over the XL at this point but still very interested in the smaller version.

Also, what happened to the early rumor that Google was working on three devices for 2018, one being the "premium" option?

Understatement of the century! o_O

The truth is, I really want to see Google do well. There is so much potential in the Pixel line, but they continue to fumble it up.

A premium experience should include both quality software and quality hardware, not just one or the other. You shouldn't lean so much on software that it becomes an excuse for poor hardware. Just like we shouldn't say "but Samsung is a hardware company" to excuse away their shortcomings in software and updates, we shouldn't let Google get away with simply being a software company.

And evidently, leaning so much on software doesn't even seem to be working out longterm given MKBHD's recent video and other users complaining about slow-down in their Pixel 2's. Clearly, optimization shouldn't be the only factor.

Hardware matters. Google has decided to make hardware. It's all fair game, especially after three generations and years more of practice before that with the Nexus line. :)

Me too. My focus is on the Pixel 3. It'll be more affordable, too, which will help me come to terms with the frugal 4GB of RAM.

I'm doing my part! :)

Just pointing out:

The S8 and S9 had headphone jacks and were IP68 waterproof. You can still use bluetooth accessories to avoid wires with an S8, S9, OnePlus 6, and any other phone with a headphone jack and bluetooth technology. In fact, Samsung continues to use the latest bluetooth tech in their devices while still keeping the jack.

I knew someone will bring in this argument. That’s why I mentioned about moving the wireless industry forward. Why do you think every other manufacturer is removing headphone jack now?

Yes you’re absolutely right about a good experience requiring both hardware and software but the problem is that one business can’t run on 2 business models.

Google is struggling because they are not a hardware company. Hardware business is very different to software. Look at all the software businesses that tried to get into hardware, not a single company has done it successfully. Eg - Google and Microsoft. Similarly, hardware companies trying to do software didn’t work either. Eg - Nokia, Motorola.

Since the launch of iPhones, consumer behaviour and expectations have changed drastically. These companies just can’t randomly change their whole strategy like that. Company ethos and value and development strategy along with movement of investment plans needs complete new direction. It’s easier said than done.

I think it is too.....the notch looks a lot like the Essential phone but more refined
I'm using the Essential phone as my main device right now, and honestly, it's the most pleasing form factor I've ever seen in a device. I truly truly appreciate the small notch so the 6t (if that does turn out to be the design) is my next device. I'll be tempted by the Pixel 3 before that though, so we'll see.

Yup, as well as being a more efficient design and not hideously ugly.

I totally misread @epicrayban post. I thought he was saying it looks like the Pixel 3 XL. Anyway, as far as having a notch goes, it looks like they've done it to the absolute minimum to accommodate sensors. I don't find that design off putting like the Pixel.

Still hoping the Pixel leaks are fake and it's not that bad. lol

It looks nice, but I wish they'd make one in a smaller size with a higher pixel density.

They should start making more tiers. I hope they will in the near future. I would love to see them offer a premium flagship with little to no compromises. I'd be willing to pay for it. I really like Oxygen OS and they've promised fast update support for up to two years, I believe.

When this day comes, Google had better get their heads straight with Pixel hardware.

After saying this, I found myself in a Best Buy playing with the Note 9 for about a half hour then instantly came back and pre-ordered it. Wowsers lmao

Yup, note 9 is impressive. What would be awesome is a note 9, but with the design of the essential phone. How awesome would the spen be on a large flat bezeless display?

Such an impressive device.
It is. I put it through it's paces (as much as I could) and geez it's so good. Curved screen will take some time to get used to, but it seems less pronounced than the 7, which was the last note I messed with. The screen is freaking gorgeous.

The OnePlus 6T is supposed to be based off this design, and will be packing a larger 3,800mAh or so battery. I would purchase the 6T over the 3 XL all day long

Having seen countless of phones with notches, the Note 9 looks refreshingly clean without one. I think Google are missing a track by abandoning top bezels for a notch as a notch free design could have been a point of difference for the Pixel 3.

Really, when I was messing with the Note9 yesterday, I really appreciated two things specifically: no notch, with nothing penetrating the display anywhere. That made watching YouTube videos on it very refreshing. And I also appreciated looking down and seeing a headphone jack.

The only phone I'll ever buy with any type of notch is an iPhone. Everything else is just a pretender. Combined with a chin (because all companies not Apple don't know how to do otherwise) it is an abomination.

Not hating on Android, I just re-bought a Pixel 2 XL from Best Buy's latest $300 off sale, after seeing what will likely be the 3 XL. Yuck.

Tried an S9 for 4 months and had enough of Samsung. Killer screen and speakers, everything else I grew to hate.

Google might build a proper retail store in Chicago: https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/16/17704064/googles-retail-space-chicago

It's time to abandon "they're primary a software company" excuse for the shortcomings of their hardware. Even if the day comes where their hardware is as good as Samsung's, they'll still be Google and known primary as a software company. It doesn't excuse them today.

Anyway, I'm all for real retail stores from Google. Hope this becomes a thing.

And yet their software isn't as stable as Samsung's nowadays.
