I do hope the displays will be nice this year. That’s Snowball’s Achilles heel, despite the display being made by Samsung. It looks nice enough displaying a bright scene in a well lit room. Trying to look at something dark colored in a dimly lit room is where it falls apart for me. Black crush. Everything looks like a bad gif.

Pixel 2 display doesn't get bright enough for me. And while we're complaining about the Pixel 2, the earpiece sucks, too.

Mine is okay. Their QC was definitely bad last year.

Is anyone starting to buy into the conspiracy theory put out by You Tube channel Frontpage Tech?

Someone posted about it on this MR thread
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ut-at-upcoming-october-9-event.2135708/page-3

I’m halfway convinced this might be a brilliant publicity stunt. Russians, Epic ungainly notch, weird requests for bad reviews of the leaks. It’s definitely looking intriguing. It’s almost too painful to contemplate that this is not a grand conspiracy and may be the horrible reality.

I want to believe!

Flat earth hasn’t been working out too well for me. :( I do, however, believe that we will never again go to the moon because it’s really made of cheese and guarded by giant alien mice. Some people try to convince me that particular conspiracy is too Gouda to be true, but I believe!

Google and HTC gave me a phone that I can squeeze and bellow Lumos and have light like a freakin wizard. I hate to think those poached HTC designers would let me down with a display that matches Richard Nixon’s hairline.

But then again, they did build in notch support into the OS.

I still don't believe, but interesting nonetheless:

Google is asking YouTubers to use their Pixel 3 XL notch-hating videos
https://www.phonearena.com/news/Google-asking-YouTubers-permission-for-Pixel-3-XL-videos_id108583

Let's assume Google did get those clips. That gives power to the theory that the leaks we’ve seen are not showing the real Pixel XL 3 and Google is planning to show how much people hated that design, only to release something completely different

It could also simply be a regular ol' highlight reel, for some reason.

Hmm, this would be the best troll job ever in the tech industry if Google actually pull something like this off. Saying the Pixel 3 XL pre-production models were stolen and sold and all the people putting out these YouTube reviews don't have the actual real device this is just a dummy prototype. Wow

I don't know, that sounds pretty crazy if true ?

Even Apple can't stop leaks anymore, the iPhone X was leaked very early on, well before official release.

If the Pixel 3 XL truly is a different phone than the one we've seen leaked the last month that would be absolutely outstanding and major props to Google for pulling something like this off. But I'm just not sure. It just seems so hard to stop leaks and not having people show it off accidentally. My early gut reaction says this probably isn't true even though I would like it to be
[doublepost=1536336307][/doublepost]But seeing the leaks of the One plus 6T i got to say WTF Google ? The 6T has a much better design, with that teardrop notch, and with a large 6.4" screen but overall smaller phone than the current Pixel 2 XL.

And the 6T has 8GB RAM and a larger 3,700mAh battery. Plus thier customizations to stock Android, feel more like a custom ROM and run butter smooth and light speed fast.

My point if OnePlus can release a beautiful design phone like the 6T and sell it for hundreds of dollars less than a pixel 3 xl with better hardware inside that really makes me question Google

Or, Google will own it. Maybe they take the clips and use them as an opportunity to go along with the public narrative and mock themselves. Then they try to convince us about the why behind the notch. It wouldn't work on everyone, but maybe there's more than meets the eye.

Hmmm

There is also this vid by fpt (I haven't watched it yet though...)

Just watched it. Quite interesting. Over the past couple of days, my interest to see what Google release has definitely grown. I have a hard time believing Google would play a montage of clips all mocking the design and then announce that design. Which leaves only one other alternative....

come on folks, this isn't a grand bamboozle by Google. They are releasing the 3 XL as we see it now in leaks. No way they'd go through all this just to fool everyone.

I'd be happy to eat crow* but I think we're already seeing the 3XL as we know it.

Oddly I have the opposing problem. The screen doesn't get dim enough for me in low light.

My non XL has been a great device in the (nearly) year that I have had it. Will have to see if there is something compelling for me to upgrade it. I assume we will get the usual "Amazing" DXOmark camera review that always feels bought and paid for, but outside of that the main feature I am after is a clean install of Android.

Would it be risky to buy a pixel 2xl when the 3 comes out? If/when it has issues, I may luck out and get upgraded to a 3xl like a lot of 6P users were given a pixel xl after a warranty claim.

Why would it be risky? You buy something and get a warranty. You might have lucked out before but I doubt they'd just start giving away 3XL's if a 2XL has a fault.

Just watched the video. It would be an amazing troll if the XL 3 "notchzilla" was actually a controlled misdirected leak put out by Google themselves.

Hard to say. Definitely interesting but very skeptical... o_O

I don’t understand what the upside to trolling would be. They’d lose sales from folks that would prefer a notch-less or less notchy design who would have picked up something else prior to October.

I meant buying one used on swappa that doesn’t have much warranty left.

He claimed that Google asked to use his video. So, in a month's time he'll either be famous or a fraud.
[doublepost=1536365035][/doublepost]If it does turn out that the leaked 3 XL isn't the final version, I doubt it is because it was intentionally leaked to troll us. However, I could see it being the case that the leaks were one of multiple prototypes, and it was a different one that they actually went with. But even that seems like a pipe dream.

It's also possible that Google really did contact some YouTube creators to use their notch-hating rants (and conspiracy theories) as a funny intro to the Pixel 3 event. That actually makes more sense than the leaks being fake.

Either way, I've got my bag of popcorn ready to unwrap and pop.

I think either way there is going to be a troll from Google...

Either a notched XL 3 or an unnotched XL 3 and or an ultra

I am more interested in that budget Pixel 3 for next year just to see how Google can FUBAR a budget device.

He claimed that Google asked to use his video. So, in a month's time he'll either be famous or a fraud.

There is a follow up video to that where he shows the actual email from Google + explains that video.

I believe it anyway, so he's not a fraud in my books.

& hence my belief that Google can pull this troll off, went from 1% to 5%.
