There is a follow up video to that where he shows the actual email from Google + explains that video.

I believe it anyway, so he's not a fraud in my books.

& hence my belief that Google can pull this troll off, went from 1% to 5%.

After watching the follow up video and reading the message he got from Google, that seems to confirm that they're making a funny montage as an intro to the event (and the video may be posted online a few days before).

Basically, Google realizes that the notch really is pretty bad, and they're going to try and salvage what they can of the release by poking fun at themselves (and hope for the best). Good luck, Google! There's always next year...

I thought it was pretty obvious from the first video that they were making some kind of montage video. Don't know where you got the idea it might be posted online a few days before. That wouldn't make any sense.

It was in the email from Google that he showed in the video.

The idea is to run this on the morning of the launch this fall (date TBA), and possibly a few days before then.

Edit: And it also says run it on the morning of the "launch". It may not even be shown at the announcement. It may only be a part of the social media campaign for the actual launch.

I think at this point the Pixel 3 XL is exactly that device we've seen leaked and Google never expected the backlash and criticism they got and are sort of screwed at this point. No changing the phone now, have to wait till the Pixel 4 for a new design.

So Google is going to go the other route and just have to make fun of themselves and try to come off as some cool hipsters mocking themselves for making such a ***** design, because really they have no other choice.

To me it seems obvious why not copy what Essential phone did and the OnePlus 6T with the teardrop notch. Both those phones have very minimal notches and look modern. Not sure why Google didn't do that ?

I said before, Google really made a mistake with their design decision. Big blunder. And no "super selfie" is going to make up for it.

I was thinking the only excuse for this rumoured notchstrocity was a super fast & secure Face ID system that was way ahead of anything on the market.

That was dismissed a while back, so imo they have no reason for notchzilla...

Front facing speakers & selfie cams aren't what I look for in a phone...

Yep, perhaps the biggest mistake when it comes to design, is the front facing speakers.

FFS made the Pixel 2 bezels even larger than the Pixel 1. Just terrible decision-making all the way back to the Pixel 2.

It's not like Google suddenly took a wrong turn with the Pixel 3 models; they've been making poor decisions honestly from the get go.

Gotta be a photoshop...

That Pixel 3 in that article doesn’t even look like the way it’s being described. It looks like it could have a huge disguised notch and chin to me. I’m not sure where they see it looking like a Samsung on the chin. Unless I’m missing a lot looking at that article on my IPhone 8 Plus display.

That and the rumored Pixelbook 2 ad just look like some bad photo edit jobs to me.

Those leaks are definitely fake.
I'd take a Pixel 3XL with a notch and "pointless" front facing speakers over a phone that is anything like the design of a Samsung. But that's just personal preference. :)

Off topic slightly but I'm not enamoured with the leaks of the Pixel 3 too much. The non XL was always my choice due to the more manageable size, but for the first time in ages I'm really excited by the Apple event scheduled for tomorrow.

I have a feeling that I may end up jumping in on an iPhone (whatever version that may be) rather than a Pixel this year.

I am feeling a bit bored of Android currently. Whilst a lot of Android hardware was finally starting to catch up to iPhone standards, I've found this whole notch thing to leave a bit of a sour taste. Couple that with Android P not being everything I'd expect it to be and it causes something of a quandary.

I've always liked iOS. But I get bored with it easier. However at least I know their gestures are spot on and the camera performance is always reliable, if not quite breathtaking. Camera being one of the more important things to me.

There's a lot of sacrifices with Android at the moment for me. Be it the gestures of P on a Pixel, my dislike of Samsung devices, Sony not making a decent phone in years, One Plus not standing out for any reason what so ever despite being so highly praised by virtually everyone, and everything else feeling like an imitation of another device, I'm almost ready to go back to steady ol' Apple.

See what tomorrow brings and I'll go from there I think. :)

There are a few things that must fall in place for me to get a 2018 iPhone myself: Trade in promos w/ Apple and my cell phone carrier, price being below or at $700 retail, A12 processor in the XR/XC/9 whatever the 6.1" model is called.

I am preparing to go ahead and use some rewards points to get discounts off an outright purchase of the LCD model from the Apple Store too.

My ideal outcome would be to get an upgrade for $200 or less out of pocket w/ a trade in of my 8+. I would like to get a device with an OLED screen, 4gb RAM, dual cameras (aka, the 10S or XS).

My expectations: $400 upgrade to the 6.1" LCD model with A11 processor forcing me to consider the iPhone X instead. Rather get the X if the LCD model is too much of a compromise.

Super excited about tomorrow, too. Apple is exciting again.

I wonder who will take top camera crown. I also am excited about iOS 13. I think after 12's stability improvements, Apple will finally adopt a more flexible OS. I really hope we see some sort of Always on Display feature, too.

@Aneres11 Off topic but as you used to work for CPW, do they now sell iPhones that are truly unlocked? As in you can now use them abroad with foreign sims after the 5 mins of calls? Because I'm sure they used to be region locked.

God. Why this isn't a thing yet I have no idea. Also hoping we get something remotely like what Android's OLEDs give us. Even if it's just the damn time!

Couldn't tell you about region locking but you're right to think that they're now no longer network locked. All phones from them are completely sim free including iPhones. :)

The speakers are excellent, I'm all in favour on the bezels on the Pixel 2 XL as the sound is much better than pretty much most other phones.

When I compared it to the Note 9 side by side, the Note definitely got a bit louder, but honestly the sound quality wasn't impressive. It was just LOUD. The Pixel 2 XL speakers were much better for me personally.

Another clear sign Google wasn't ready to remove the 3.5 mm headphone jack:

Google replaces $9 headphone dongle with nearly identical $12 version
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbre...e-headphone-jack-dongle-update-price-increase

Their dongle is absolute garbage. Not sure how this "second generation" dongle will be.

Ahhh now this we CAN agree on!! It is not great. Constant crackling in my car it moves 1mm :D

Bravo Google!

You revolutionised smartphone with computational photography. The bad news is that Apple have now reponded and matched you. Apple clearly didn’t appreciate the Pixel 2 constantly bing crowned the best camera but selling at 30-40% less than Samsung and Apple smart phones. It’s rare for Apple to be single handedly beaten in an area and respond within a year with force.

The Pixel 3 will need to have a next level camera as the iPhone Xr has been designed to fend off the Pixel, Huawei and similar phones that compete at 30% less than the flagship iPhone.

Honestly, the Xr is the easily best value of the bunch. I'm shocked they actually put the A12 in it.
