Could this mean there are three devices coming from Google on October?!

Google shares new Pixel 3 teaser ahead of October 9 event
https://androidandme.com/2018/09/news/google-pixel-3-teaser-october-9-event/

Just kidding. Is Google trying to steal some thunder from Apple? Lulz
[doublepost=1536926788][/doublepost]
Looks like the Pixel 3/XL colors are confirmed. Black, white/turquoise and a mint/turquoise.

https://9to5google.com/2018/09/14/google-pixel-3-colors-hint-teaser/

Will they make all three available this time in all storage sizes? Google's exclusivity with Verizon is getting tiring.

[doublepost=1536927314][/doublepost]Has Google sent out additional teases like this before? Seems a little odd and reactionary to Apple.

I think Google is realizing they messed up this year. No Pixel Watch, a terrible notch and overall design, and crap gesture controls.

Who is in charge of the Pixel at Google? They need to seriously get organized.

I know I posted about buying an XR in here a few days ago, but I think I've changed my mind.
I know the screen was mentioned for being low res, but when I realised that YouTube videos wouldn't go above 720p it did put me off somewhat...

Also, the hands on videos I've seen when people compare them to an XS or regular X, makes me feel a bit deflated as it justify doesn't look as quality made as those devices.

Half tempted by an XS Max to see the size as can always exchange it for a regular size if too big.

Or wait for the Pixel 3... hmmm.

XR is a fine device, but I think it's is a tough sell personally. Not only is the resolution lower, but it's LCD and the bezels are so thick they're distracting.

People are applauding Apple for keeping the A12 chip and the dual speakers and other 2018 features, but this is a $750 phone. It should have the latest. Apple pricing is so insane now that people are treating it like Apple is doing them a favor at that price-point.

Yeah, my initial reaction was that the Xr was a great value, but then I saw all of the compromises they made to get it to $749, when it all reality it should be priced more around $649 for the number of corners they cut. The number one thing I want to know is why are the bezels thicker? Because of LCD? That doesn't make sense because Essential has very slim bezels around the sides.

I keep reading that Xr as Jr... Cause well that's basically what it is and probably a direct competitor for the pixel XL 3 AKA notchzilla.

Is it me or has it been difficult trying to get excited about any of these new phones this year?

Also don't help that Google has an apparent backdoor in Android (which should come as a surprise to no one... Look at that battery saver issue...) o_O

Essential has a substantial chin and no 3D facial recognition.

That could be it.

Yes, I know that, but don't detract away from my original point. The Essential phone has very thin side bezels, as I said. Wondering why Apple didn't, or couldn't do the same.

I'm not entirely sure. It also requires software (anti-aliasing) to achieve the look. LCD just wasn't meant to ever be as good or flexible (literally) or pretty as OLED. While they're an improvement from the iPhone 8 bezels, I personally can't get over how thick they still are. It doesn't help that the metal enclosure is so visible, too, adding to the overall borders:

The iPhone XS already has rather thick borders, but it's forgivable and I think Apple did the best they could with a notch, but that's as thick as they should get. The fact that the XR's borders are even thicker turns me off. I can't unsee them.

Apple has a very interesting price structure, with iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 now being the entry points and everything X being way overpriced IMO. Even if I wanted to purchase another iOS device I wouldn't spend what they're asking for the XS. Heck, I wouldn't even spend that much money on a Samsung device. I guess I'm going to be in the budget category from here on out as I don't want to spend more than $650 on something that isn't a long-term investment.

I like the size of the XR and the camera, but I don't believe it is worth $750, and I don't want to go back to iOS as my primary device. My work phone is an iPhone 7 and I just don't like iOS anymore.

It's going to be Pixel 3 or OnePlus 6T for my next device. I had previously decided against the possibility of a OnePlus device due to size, but I bought a case so that I could actually carry it around with me to test the size, and it's not as big of a deal now that I've tried it.

If the iPhone xr didn’t have Face ID and had a chin, I’m sure the bezels would be just as slim as the essentials.

What? The X/Xs and Xr have the same Face ID, yet you think that plays a role in the Xr having a thicker bezel? o_O

At the end of the day, after all the hype, I'm still an Android guy, too. I also use iOS every day and I feel the same way; it's just way too limiting with too many annoying inconsistencies. My biggest pain point is typing. Writing out any lengthy emails or messages on iOS is just a terrible experience.

But this is also why I'm so critical of Google. I want Android but they've clearly made many mistakes going all the way back to the Pixel 1 and 2. This time around, they messed up gestures (thankfully it's still optional) and their hardware is just so inadequate that it makes the Pixel 3 models undesirable.

It's an awkwardly tough time in smartphones, in my honest opinion. From hideous notches (iPhone XS included) to rising prices to the unnecessarily early loss of the headphone jack... it's just all bizarre.

I think the mint combo could look pretty stellar. Hopefully it's not a VZW exclusive though. I'm guessing my wife will get the white version we've seen from the leaks.
[doublepost=1536947067][/doublepost]Also, these reports of Samsung and Google working together to solve RCS is pretty exciting (yeah I know, we're tired of hearing about RCS and not seeing it), because it's probably the most significant step forward for RCS yet if they pull it off. Getting the biggest manufacturer on the platform behind it should pay dividends.

I'm not a big fan of the kinda blue/mint-like color variant. I wish they would bring back the blue in the original Pixel:

X/xs is oled.
Xr is lcd.

Having an lcd display without the chin and the Face ID module at the top would be the reason the xr has thicker bezels then the essential.

And the fact that the x/xs have a flexible oled display is the the reason bezels are more minimal on that model compared to the xr.

Not that difficult to grasp.

It's not really the impression I get from them, but I know you hate everything other than whats perfection in your mind so unless it's designed by you I imagine anything will be a tough sell.

I like the XR and I do think the price is more affordable for what is on offer. Outside of the screen and (potentially) disappointing camera, I think it's priced just a touch too much and should really be 699. That would be absolutely perfect in my mind. However it is not so there we are. It's still a much more attractive prospect than an iPhone 9 with the same specs and same design of old that they could have wheeled out for the same price, but chose not to so I think it's a great choice for a lot of Apple fans come upgrade time.

If I was working at Google and in charge of the Pixel line, I promise you'd want it. ;)

Interesting that unlocked you can still buy an Xs in all segments for sept 21st delivery. The XsMax is only 1-2 week delivery. I dont think I have ever seen an iphone preorder stay in stock this long.

With the XR not releasing until Oct 19th, there is plenty of time for Google to wow us. I have a feeling it's going to be a XR vs Pixel regular 3 battle. I could see the pixel 3 coming in at $50 cheaper and I dont put it past Google to provide an even better camera experience than Apple.

One thing for sure if I was to switch to Apple, I would miss all the google photos free storage and neato things you can do with pics. Google surprises me with some of it's automated edits it does with my pics. :)

Two weeks ago it put a video together of my cat and it was the cutest thing. I mean, weird and creepy on some level, but I still loved it.

My cat died of cancer in May, Google put together a montage of pics/vids of my cat. It was pretty, well, neat. My second son was born in June and it once again made a cool video collecting everything from his birth. These are really neat touches you don't get on iOS that I know of.

Sorry to hear that.

A lot of folks have been tossing around the term 'evil' in response to Google tracking your activity. I get it, people don't want to be tracked, but what's being missed are those nice touches like the cute videos and what not. Those touches make me feel good, regardless of their intentions. Not to mention the other actual help I get from location-based alerts and what not.

The side bezels are basically the same size as the Plus iPhones. It’s distracting for me.
The X and Xs at least have thinner size bezels then the regular and plus versions.

Is it worse than a notch and a chin?

I went by the Apple store today to see if they offer any trade in on pixels...nope..about the only phone they don’t take. WEIRD!

I'll give the new gestures one credit:

When driving and using navigation mounted on a car dock, it's easier to switch between two apps (the alt tab feature) with a gesture. Easier than double tapping for the alt tab. Easier = safer.

The quick swipe right works great in general. So it begs the question, why can't swipe left work for a back gesture? It's a waste to not put this gesture to use.

Then for home and app switcher, copy Apple. I'm serious. Swipe up for home -- always available. Swipe up and hold for a split second (maybe make this a hair faster than Apple's) to go into the new app switcher screen -- and here, keep the same useful features from this new screen, like your main dock of icons being available.

And that's it. Boom. You have the right gestures for the best mobile OS navigation. Because Android's navigation is better than iOS'. It's always been, with its consistent back button and fast alt-tab.

You could even have a "long swipe up" to pull up the app drawer from any screen if you so wish, so long as a short swipe up will always take you home.

And lastly, for Google Assistant, same long press of the home bar (the new visual cue similar to iOS').

Done.
