I'll give the new gestures one credit:

When driving and using navigation mounted on a car dock, it's easier to switch between two apps (the alt tab feature) with a gesture. Easier than double tapping for the alt tab. Easier = safer.

The quick swipe right works great in general. So it begs the question, why can't swipe left work for a back gesture? It's a waste to not put this gesture to use.

Then for home and app switcher, copy Apple. I'm serious. Swipe up for home -- always available. Swipe up and hold for a split second (maybe make this a hair faster than Apple's) to go into the new app switcher screen -- and here, keep the same useful features from this new screen, like your main dock of icons being available.

And that's it. Boom. You have the right gestures for the best mobile OS navigation. Because Android's navigation is better than iOS'. It's always been, with its consistent back button and fast alt-tab.

You could even have a "long swipe up" to pull up the app drawer from any screen if you so wish, so long as a short swipe up will always take you home.

And lastly, for Google Assistant, same long press of the home bar (the new visual cue similar to iOS').

Done.

I agree. And this is the kind of thing I always try to make happen when I'm using P, instictively and it's jarring when it doesn't happen. It's almost like re-learnjng a whole new OS (well, maybe not that extreme) but it's not far from it if you're only used to pressing the three capacitive buttons.

I like that the new features are optional, but wonder how long that'll be the case for on Pixels.

Yup, I'm using an app called gesture control with my Note 9 to give me similar gestures than what you described. Much better than the stock gestures Google is implementing.

One thing for sure if I was to switch to Apple, I would miss all the google photos free storage and neato things you can do with pics. Google surprises me with some of it's automated edits it does with my pics. :)

You can still use Google photos on iOS devices. I have it on my iPad. You won't get full res storage for free like on a Pixel but still get unlimited high res storage.

I just don't understand why Google can't figure this out. What they came up with is convoluted and unintuitive. A half attempt at gestures while breaking the app drawer function.

@Fernandez21 which app?

No, no root. You do need to enter developer mode and enter an adb command, but it doesnt need to be rooted to work.

EDIT: I figured it out by trail and error. Will test out this app now... Thanks!

Can you help?

I have macOS ADP installed on to my computer. Debugging mode is turned on. I get lost at this step and on:

  1. Extract it somewhere - for example, ~/adb-fastboot.
  2. Add the following to ~/.bash_profile:
    if [ -d "$HOME/adb-fastboot/platform-tools" ] ; then
    export PATH="$HOME/adb-fastboot/platform-tools:$PATH"
    fi

  3. Log out and back in

What does that first step even mean, extract it somewhere? I extracted it to my desktop. I'm not sure what's next. And I certainly don't know what add the following to bash etc even means.

Really looking forward to using this gesturing app but I gotta get rid of the nav bar...

I just followed this guide, and after I confirmed my phone was connected by using ./adb devices , I just copy and pasted what was provided by the app and hit enter.

Wow. Pretty impressive! Love the customization, like choosing its opacity or whether it animates with your gesture or not. Really slick.

This is exactly what gestures should be on Android.
A pill shape button that can gesture in all relevant directions, that animates with you as you gesture for visual cues, and that is slightly customizable for people to fine tune their preference -- people who might have trouble seeing the gesture bar can, for example, choose a "large" size from a simple settings menu.

That's it.

I don't know how Google messed up this idea so badly. They took a wrong turn somewhere in their planning. This app gets it right.

Yeah, it's really not hard, like at all. I'm slightly embarrassed . Just need to know how to go into terminal and what to type in. Sweet.

Just wondering if there a way to hide the notch on the Pixel 3XL in the software settings?

I want to be able to hide the notch on the Pixel 3XL as shown in this concept. Do you think Google will make this available as a software option in settings for the Pixel 3XL? It will be nice to have this option as it kind of makes the top and bottom bezels equal height and as someone that likes symmetry, I will appreciate it more than the rabbit ears up top next to the front facing cameras.

Huawei's recent P20 phones came with a way to turn off the notches in Settings. Check out this video at the 1:14 mark. I just wish the Pixel 3XL comes with this option too.

I don't think there has been any leaks or indication of this yet, but hopefully.

You get unlimited high res storage on a non-pixel device??

I have only used google photos on my iPad as an easy way of accessing my pics.

Yes. It's only the full res that costs (or free on a Pixel). I uploaded thousands of pics in the summer that I had on my iPad after dumping a few memory cards on it.

Sure it’s the end of 2020. I’d assume everything already on there would still be free.
99% sure that's accurate. Anything from that point on will be 'high-res', and not full resolution.

Edit: here it is
Pixel owners, on the other hand, get a little reprieve. They can upload all of their photos and videos at full resolution for free, "original quality" in Google's lexicon. That is, until 2020. After that, things change. New photos and videos taken on any Pixel phone after 2020 will be compressed to Google's "high quality"standard (16-megapixel photos and 1080p video).

On a related note have any of you tried to get photos off of google photos onto your computer. It’s a PITA and very messy process using google takeout. I made the mistake of setting my phone to delete photos after 90 days that were backed up. You have to do some MAJOR clean up of the files exported and google takeout is fairly hidden. My one and only complaint on google photos.

You could just go to photos.google.com and download them, no?

I suppose it’s alright having them stored online. But nothing beats having them stored at full res on your own hard drives. Because you still have to wait for the images to load up and they aren’t arranged neatly in folders.

That wasn’t an option with 75+ gigs of pics. It would take a really long time to download them individually. The only way to mass export them is google takeout, but you get a bunch of meta data files you have to clean up. It’s funky.

Ah, yeah, that's a lot of pics to download so that makes sense.

I've done the unthinkable and pre ordered an XS Max, despite swearing blind I wouldn't buy an iPhone for a long while. So obviously the Pixel 3 XL will turn out to be an amazing device I really want now! Maybe a year away from iOS will make it a nice change.
