What ultimately made you do it?

I love my Pixel but have been getting the itch to have a new phone to play with. The only front cameras I rate are iPhones and Pixels. And with the Pixel looking like it'll have a monster notch, thought I'd try an iPhone.

I can always return if I can't get on with it. And while the price is high, they also hold their value better. And I got 10% off which is a good saving.

Getting a new iPhone every year was wasting money. But switching between brands keeps it refreshed a little. I'll still be wanting to see what the Pixels actually bring.
[doublepost=1537131715][/doublepost]The biggest thing will probably being annoyed at having my icons at the top of the screen instead of the bottom. Pretty stupid in 2018.

Just wondering if there a way to hide the notch on the Pixel 3XL in the software settings?

I want to be able to hide the notch on the Pixel 3XL as shown in this concept. Do you think Google will make this available as a software option in settings for the Pixel 3XL? It will be nice to have this option as it kind of makes the top and bottom bezels equal height and as someone that likes symmetry, I will appreciate it more than the rabbit ears up top next to the front facing cameras.

Huawei's recent P20 phones came with a way to turn off the notches in Settings. Check out this video at the 1:14 mark. I just wish the Pixel 3XL comes with this option too.

But honestly we don't know how the pixel 3xl will look like yet. Everything is still rumors.

Should have called the other cremesickle or something. It looks like they are riding the wave of the Panda hype though and offering several variations, which is cool.

It'd be really cool if they let us customize our devices Motorola-style like back in the days of the Moto X.

It'd be a homage to the Panda 2 XL. They could let you choose three things: the top color, the bottom color, and the power-button color.
[doublepost=1537194881][/doublepost]I hope all colors are available unlocked and in all storage variants. Don't want to see the mint or any exclusive colors just for Verizon...

Even when the mint Pixel 2 became available unlocked after 6 months or so, it was only available in 64GB storage.

If I were looking to go Android, the Mint Pixel 3 would've been solid. I am rooting for Google to get better. It only pushes Apple further too.

I wouldn't write of the Pixel 3 yet. Although early days, a photographer has released photos taken by the Xs. The samples indicate that Apple hasn't advanced the iPhone camera by much. I'm certainly not enticed to give up my P2XL for an Xs.

Hopefully the Pixel 3 will take camera performance to new heights.

Nilay Patel (The Verge) doesn't think the Xs cameras are as good as the Pixel 2, and his portrait examples don't look particularly good. He claims their supposedly revolutionary bokeh adjustment is extremely hit or miss. It'll be interesting to see what the Pixel 3 brings.

I just read the review and am truly shocked by how the Xs camera underperforms given the high price and 10-15min presentation about how revolutionary the camera is. The portrait mode in leaves a lot to be desired for a two lens phone. Wow!

Thanks for including the link, I probably should have done that myself. That portrait picture of the guy towards the bottom of the review is just really really bad in about every way. We know the Apple keynote examples are perfect result scenarios. I'm sure they had to comb through poor examples to find the good ones to use for the keynote. That's why I take these things with a grain of salt until they are in real hands.

Verrrrrrrrrrry interesting!

For me, the camera is one of the most important things, so the Pixel 2 XL? I'm prepared to put up with certain pain points. I use the Portrait Mode loads, actually.

That's rather disappointing from Apple, and having bought the Note 9 (and returned it), I'd say Google are well ahead of both.

And that's before the Pixel 3 is even released. Wow.

But for people who don't care about the camera as much, all these flagships are still great phones, no doubt.

I was most excited to see the XS go up against the Pixel 3's camera. Given that it doesn't appear to be better than even the Pixel 2, that's Google's opening in October. The Pixel 3 camera can put even more distance between the two.

I'm particularly hoping to see better details and sharpness, and more accurate portrait modes that can really identify and clearly differentiate objects in foreground and background. These are its weaknesses currently.

And as I've said before, part of the camera experience is Photos -- I hope we continue to see unlimited backups as a feature.

It's also interesting that The Verge review says the XS camera is closer to Samsung's:

Apple used to talk a big game about having a more accurate camera than Samsung, which has done aggressive smoothing and saturation tricks for years, but images from the iPhone XS camera look more like Samsung’s cameras than ever.

I'm pretty much at a point where the cameras in all the flagships are good enough for me that I don't let the camera hold as much weight as it did a few years ago. The pixels, iphones, galaxy, notes, mates, LGs, even the one plus are all pretty great now.

The pics I take on my phones are rarely ever viewed outside of small screens so I don't need the quality of my Stand-Alone mirrorless/dslr camera.

There really is something about the Pixel 2's image processing that makes the results a little more special -- the dynamic range is just unmatched.

But you're right, all modern day flagships are amazing cameras regardless. Which is why I'm so critical of Google about everything else -- the rest of the phone matters, too. Will Google have as good screens, speakers, build quality, features like IP68 and facial unlock, etc?

I am writing off the Pixel 3 as an option because I am all in the Apple ecosystem for the foreseeable future. I am going XR or XS. Next time I would buy a phone, who knows what a Pixel 5 or 6 will have?

The Google Pixel 3...... is over achieving. Google is not settling with the notch at the top. They are also adding one at the bottom too :)

I just can’t get over how ugly the 3 xl is. There would have to be something really serious going on in that notch to justify how ugly it is. I can do some function over form, but I have my limits.

The regular pixel 3 looks uninspired. There just seems to be a total lack of creativity going on. Google has to majorly sell me on these phones to stop me from buying an XR...and I’ve had an android device since 2012.
