I don't think there is a setting to switch off. Just gestures. (shrug)

Seems a LOT of wasted space. I don't understand why use that pill, when it offers no benefit or screen real estate savings over the soft keys.

I think gestures are more for feel than space. It feels good to scroll through your apps.

I ordered the smaller (aka normal size) Pixel 3 tonight. The higher price made me consider waiting for OnePlus 6T, but the size was the deciding factor for me. I really just don't want anything larger than my S8. The camera quality makes me feel better about the expense, though, because I don't have any camera other than what is in my phone.
That’s a logical sounding reason for your choice. I hope you enjoy the Pixel 3 and I look forward to your comments on it. What color did you get?

I’m sad there’s no Panda this year. At least they kept colorful buttons. Except for the notch the overall chassis looks more elegant. I wonder which design team remained—HTC’s or the Google designers.

Gah, I still haven’t had a chance to check out the videos or read many articles. Too much going on here all of a sudden, so I don’t have a sense of this year’s offerings.

...looking through the camera samples i can now definitely say that XS takes better pictures than Pixel 3...no t massively better but def better wb and overall hdr...the video is also better (highlights not blown)...sharpness seems the same however om some shots pixel is applying some sort of local contrast boost which results in perceived sharper image

Yeah, I don't get why they still have that whole bar at the bottom along with the pill. I would be much more on board the pill floated on top of your content like the iPhone does.

I ordered the black one.

I'll post my impressions once I receive it!

Honestly, they're both pretty ugly phones on the front. One is just more obviously ugly than the other. The back of the device seems to have been refined nicely though...

Initially I didn't get on with the gestures but now they are second nature. The recommend apps is good to the point that I rarely use my home screen or app drawer.

How is the standard pixel that much different than LG, Huawei, HTC, Xiaomi and others? Or do you find all devices outside of Samsung and Apple design language to be ugly?

Diminishing returns were hit years ago for both Apple, Samsung and Google. We have reached a point where squeezing out 5-10% extra performance is more expensive.

The solution for consumer? Don't buy the latest phones, buy a year old phone. It gives you 90% of the performance at 40% less money.

Hence why Apple now has a range spanning iPhone 7 to Xs. You don't have to own the latest phone.
I agree.

The only saving grace for smartphones seem to be their camera and software improvements, albeit with cameras, we're also seeing a slowdown in improvements.

As for performance, cheap Chinese phones at less than a quarter of the price of an iPhone XS perform reasonably well for many use cases, it's actually quite surprising how well they perform. Some of them actually look pretty decent and premium in fact (and even have a notch, if it that floats their boat) :p

In case anyone was wondering, this what the Pixel 3 XL looks like with the Notch disabled...

Looks just like my Pixel 2 XL.
Indeed. What doesn't make sense to me though is that the icons in the Notification bar move down when you disable the notch. On the Huawei P20/Pro and Mate 20 Lite, disabling the notch leaves you still with the icons in "the ears", which IMO makes more sense as you don't lose usable screen real estate, the " ears" just become black.
