Why is the pricing higher than my 2 XL a year ago ? It's just the annual hardware upgrades all next gen phones get. That shouldn't cost more.
They should be selling Pixel 3 for $599 and Pixel 3 XL for $699. Any more and it's outrageous fir what your getting.

Heck the Nexus 6P was $499, and it had the current best Snapdragon processor for it's time, and the best RAM for the time. And it had the latest Samsung AMOLED display, and one of the top camera's for it's day, all for five hundred bucks.

Today these companies are fleecing us, and laughing as they gouge us more and more each year. Soon phones will be starting at $1,500 for the regular versions, and $2,000 for the top end, and that'll be in a few years.

Ahhh screw it. I thought about waiting for the Mate 20 Pro but who knows how long it will take to become available from Amazon. It's not CDMA compatible I'm currently on AT&T but my work uses Verizon. I'll just port my number over and let them pay for my line so I just pre-orderd the unlocked black XL 128. Save me $120 a month or so. Looking forward to it. This will be my first Google phone. Wish the battery was closer to 4000 but that's OK. Should be a great phone. Can't wait to have that awesome camera.

I think the market will determine when the prices stop increasing. As long as phones are selling, they'll keep raising prices. It'll be interesting to see how well iPhone XS sells at the higher price.

Having said that, Pixel 3 is still a much better device than iPhone XS, IMO, and is much less. So, yes, it's frustrating that phone prices are increasing, but I still believe that my $799 spent on Pixel 3 is a better value than $749 for iPhone XR, or even more spent on iPhone XS.

Great video. Confirms IP68 waterproofing and new camera sensor. MKBHD also says the dual front speakers are significantly better. Thank goodness.
[doublepost=1539103009][/doublepost]

Some of these features are really cool.

I just think it's a tough price to swallow. It's $899 for the 128GB smaller Pixel 3.
[doublepost=1539103113][/doublepost]The regular Pixel 2 XL has gone down in price, FYI: https://store.google.com/config/pixel_2
That's$100 cheaper than the new 64gb iPhone. But I get that's high, too high for me.

Comments across the tech blogs are slamming the notch and the pricing. Deservedly so, I say.

IMO, this should've been the pricing:

Pixel 3 XL - $849, $949 128GB.
Pixel 3 - $749, $849 128GB

Pixel 2 XL - Price dropped to $699 (as it really is on their site).
Pixel 2 - Price dropped to $599 (still $649 on their site).
Google out pricing themselves out of the smartphone game.

I actually don't really mind the notch now that I've watched many hands-on videos. I might wait for a really good sale on 3 XL 128GB. Otherwise, I will not purchase this phone at full-price. I'd get the OnePlus 6T, but I'm on Verizon and I don't know if I fully trust the company.

Yeah, was reading through the comments one of the
Android Central videos and it was a virtual bloodbath. Android fans not pleased with these phones.

Notches on phones are not ideal to me, but whatever they are not the end of the world either, the ones on like the Essential, and OnePlus 6 and iPhone X aren't too bad, I can live with them, and they don't look to pronounced or anything.

But man the Pixel 3 XL notch, really is bad, and I didn't think I would make a big deal bout it, but watching a ton of YouTube videos of people playing around with the new 3 XL, and the notch is comically large, and dips down way too low into the screen, and is extremely noticeable. Whereas on the iPhone X it's there, but not screaming loud in your face it's there, but the 3 X, holy cow, the notch is frigging huge, and distracting looking. And I am a bigtime Nexus / Pixel nerd, I love the stock Google phones, but F me, the notch is killing me on the Pixel 3 XL.

Look at this video, and tell me the notch isn't ugly as sin;

Uh...

Looks like it's gesture navigation only on these puppies

https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/10/09/google-confirms-gesture-navigation-mandatory-pixel-3/

Wonder if Google will bar launchers that violate this?

----

Overall I'm very underwhelmed with this year's offering. :(

Still a very low chance of me ordering anything else (aside from the panda xl 2 I just snagged since it was "last call" for them and price slightly knocked down)

The slate? Maybe. The pixel 3 (not the notchzilla)? Maybe. Eventually.

Not really. Nexus (and now Pixel) phones have never sold in massive amounts. And they don't need to. Google isn't dependent upon hardware sales like Apple is. They make 90% of their revenue from ads. Apple makes 75% from the iPhone. If ad revenue goes down, then I see Google pivoting and putting massive amounts of money into making, advertising and selling phones or whatever hardware can make them the most profit. Until then, you'll see these phones continue to be produced and sell maybe a little more each year.
[doublepost=1539145419][/doublepost]The only thing I saw out of the entire presentation that impressed me (and I wish every phone offered this because of all those stupid robocalls I keep getting) was the Google Assistant phone answering. You can watch, in real time, as the AI talks to the person you get a transcription of the call. You can then choose to pick up and answer if it is a legit call. Otherwise, you just delete the call and it goes bye bye.

Right now, I pay $10 a month for Robokiller to annoy the crap out of those callers on my iPhone X. So, if I save $120 a year with a built in feature on the Pixel, that to me is worth it.

Glad they're going all in. Good to know that even if it's a mistake that they're not backing down. I almost want to buy one just because of that.

That being said, I kind of like the Pixel gestures.

I warned that this was likely the case when the P beta first came out and everyone thought I was crazy. Google wouldn’t have put the gestures front and center if they didn’t intend on fully moving in that direction.

Agreed. Their gestures aren’t ideal but I don’t find them as problematic as most. And for once Google is actually showing commitment to something, unlike their messaging apps and any number of other products and services. I’m always hesitant to adopt something new from Google out of fear that it’ll just be dumped in a year or two.

Wait, that notch & no Face ID?
----
Shush Mode means well, but I always get worried when phones are placed screen-down without a case lip to protect them...micro scratches imminent..
----
Google Lens gets more impressive, able to suggest a phone number just by looking at menus etc.
----
I'm not a big camera user & front facing speakers aren't my thing, so the Pixel's big selling points don't appeal to me.
----
Pixel Stand design's clever for those of us who intent to charge phones on a night stand, & use them as an alarm clock. Though the lower lip won't play nice with Home Gestures, so my initial thoughts of getting it for my iPhone X were quashed.
----
Call Screening's handy for many. Not me though, as (thankfully) we don't have spam on mobiles to deal with...only landlines.

Diminishing returns were hit years ago for both Apple, Samsung and Google. We have reached a point where squeezing out 5-10% extra performance is more expensive.

The solution for consumer? Don't buy the latest phones, buy a year old phone. It gives you 90% of the performance at 40% less money.

Hence why Apple now has a range spanning iPhone 7 to Xs. You don't have to own the latest phone.

Pie gestures are default?
Oh hell no. Until they are changed to be more user friendly then I’m down and out even more.
