MKBHD First Impressions already up

Great video. Confirms IP68 waterproofing and new camera sensor. MKBHD also says the dual front speakers are significantly better. Thank goodness.

Tough crowd here. The phone can make call and answer them for you AND has an unrivalled camera yet the pitch forks are out.

Crazy.

Some of these features are really cool.

I just think it's a tough price to swallow. It's $899 for the 128GB smaller Pixel 3.
[doublepost=1539103113][/doublepost]The regular Pixel 2 XL has gone down in price, FYI: https://store.google.com/config/pixel_2

Agreed on the audio!

Audio from the Pixel 2 is and always was terrible. I was excited to get stereo speakers on the 2 and was immediately disappointed. The iPhone 7 sounded far better with stereo audio and somehow had better midrange punch than the forward facing speakers on the 2.

I believe the Pixel 3 will be a significantly better smartphone than the XR. Even so, the general masses will look at an iPhone XR at $750 and a Pixel 3 at $799 and most will instantaneously pick the iPhone.

Google barely stands a chance even with their smartphones priced correctly, how can they expect to compete with it priced higher than the most popular-branded competitor?

$799 starting price is a mistake. It should've been $699 frankly -- a cool $50 bump from the Pixel 2. Just like the 3 XL is a $50 bump from the 2 XL.

Bad decisions compounded on top of bad decisions.

No 4K 60fps or 1080p 120fps video recording.

iPhone XR 128gb $200 dollars cheaper than Pixel 3 XL 128gb.

And you could get the upcoming OnePlus 6t for below $600.

You can get an android phone cheaper than the OnePlus 6 too. Does it make it less worthy of its price? No.

As for the 50 dollar bump. Google has larger displays and added wireless charging that can be used with a stand that's actually useful.

Google phones are much better value than iphones too as new features are added the following year. E.g the Pixel 2 is receiving some of the new camera features.

Overall I find it comical that someone insist that Google innovate but don't price their phone higher than the Xr or OnePlus 6. o_O

Anyone who is price sensitive can choose from a multitude of phones. $50-100 doesn't make a big difference when looking at 2 year phone plans.

I understand what you're saying.

I don't think Google is going to sell a meaningful amount of these devices -- the price being the proverbial final nail -- but who knows.

It's irrelevant. Google have made a fantastic phone and those who buy them will have a fantastic experience with them. Having owned apple and Samsung phones I welcome a solid cutting edge alternative. I am glad Google will sell the Pixel line in more countries going forward.

Whether it was $100 more expensive or cheaper wouldn't have made a difference to die hard iPhone fans. So let's not be concerned about them.

Let’s see how long these are supported before we can call them better value.

Remember that many new iOS features are added to older phones too (hardware depending) and that you can still get a current version of iOS on a device from 2013.

How many Android phones from 2013 can run Pie?? There is a huge value in having a phone supported for many years.

to add.....I don't think Google's goal is to sell a ton of these to be honest. I think they want to sell just enough to keep their phones tied into the rest of their ecosystem to sell more services.

True...but then what is the user experience like running IOS 12 on older IOS devices?

I have an iPad Air running IOS 12 and it is not a pleasant user experience. So yes...it will run IOS 12 but not in a friendly way.....

But I do agree with what you're saying about Android and older devices.

Jeysus, mobile tech really is a mature technology huh? No real mention of hardware technology improvement. If the most exciting thing on that front is etching, i would say that the platform has levelled out.

In which case charging €£$ for modern smartphones needs to come with the understanding that this means people replace or renew phones now (they have become a commodity) rather than upgrade and that androids two year support period needs to change.

I am no fan of IPhones, but if I'm keeping my next phone for a long time, I want it to be supported for a long time.

Time for android to step up.

I can’t help but feel that the smaller Pixel 3 feels a bit dated. It’s surely going to be something like 900 euros in my country like the previous models have been so I don’t see why anyone would buy it over say a S9 that is much cheaper or put down a bit more money for a Note 9.

Well, my kids use my iPad mini 4, which felt unusable for the last year until iOS 12, now it runs much better.

I will let you know. I still have a 5S that runs iOS 10.3.3, and have been watching posts / benchmarks on others that have made the change. Some things stay the same speed, other things (boot, and some native applications and keyboard) are considerably faster in 12 as compared to 10.

Really? "great benefits"? How are these being measured exactly? What are these great benefits???

We had great one-hand-friendly devices before the notch and we will have plenty more after the stupid thing goes away.
Sigh, look up reviews man. Your hate is blinding you...

It cracks me up that all of the Android companies mocked Apple for lack of headphone jack, "the notch", and lack of expandable storage (among other things). And here we are...how ya like me now?

By the time your phone is 5 years old, not being able to run the latest software will be the least of your issue. Battery, screen, charging speed etc will already be outdated.

iOS 12 is the first Apple update that makes phone faster. For years, devices have been made slower. My iPad 3 which I wiped was unusable when I traded in last year, and there wasn't an option to downgrade software.

Let’s see how long these are supported before we can call them better value.

The P2 is getting some of the new features from the P3 while the iPhone X did not get computational photography as an update.

Jeysus, mobile tech really is a mature technology huh? No real mention of hardware technology improvement. If the most exciting thing on that front is etching, i would say that the platform has levelled out.

At last year's keynote Apple spent 20min waffling about the hardware of the iPhone X camera which has achieved junk status now that it doesn't have computational photography like the Xr, Pixel 3 or even last year's Pixel 2.

Diminishing returns on CPU were reached by Samsung, Apple and other manufacturers last year. Whether you have the this year or last years phone, Instagram, web browsers, WhatsApp and other popular apps run as well. If you are a gamer and like VR then specs are absolutely relevant.

Prices are great compared to Apple though to be fair.

I haven’t managed to watch all of the keynote yet but the call answering feature sounds awesome.

That, and the OnePlus 6T still has a notch. It's a tiny drop, but it's still a notch in my book. Add to that the questionable business practices of the company and lack of immediate updates. And no Verizon support. No thanks. The only Android phones I'll ever consider from here on out are Pixels. Did not care for the S9 at all.

Returned my XS after two weeks for several reasons. I didn't fully appreciate how much more useful / practical Android and my Pixel 2 XL are than Apple until I went back to the Pixel. Ordered the regular Pixel 3 immediately when it went up and am very excited for it. I'm waiting to buy the Pixel Stand until I receive the phone hopefully defect free. I'm also very excited about the stand. It will replace my ancient iHome that uses the old wide connector with my iPod Nano, haha. Time to upgrade the night stand set up as well!

One of the most overlooked feature by Apple fans is the squeeze feature to activate google assist. I didn't consider its importance before I bought the Pixel. I literarily squeeze every day to make calls or search Google. The phone always understand what I'm saying and is considerably quicker than typing or opening an app. I can say thing like “call BMW Park Lane” or “ John Smith dental clinic in New York” and it will make the call. No need to put certain numbers into my address book.
