With a Samsung panel, it makes sense:

[Update: Full report now live] DisplayMate says the Pixel 3 XL display gets an 'A+ Rating'
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/10/16/displaymate-says-pixel-3-xl-display-gets-rating/

...earning our Highest A+ Display Rating and a DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award, with Absolute Color Accuracy that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect!!

In light of last year, this is a big deal. This is the sort of hardware progress and attention to detail we need from Google.

Are you all getting the email about $50 in credit at the Google store when ordering a 3 or 3 XL? I think I'll hold out to see what they offer in the coming months. Waiting on $100 off and a free wireless charging stand.

100 off and a free charger? Not anytime soon

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but it appears that the Pixel 3 has esim support as well, similar to the XS. So you can go dual sim mode when available, pretty big deal for a lot of people.

The smaller Pixel 2 was a Samsung panel, not sure why they would change that this year for the Pixel 3, especially with the 3XL getting a Samsung panel. Folks have also said the two panels (3/3XL) look the same.

Pixel Stand seems like a good use of that $50 credit.

My question is, where is the Pixel 3 panel from? Also Samsung?

I'm close to pre-ordering...

EDIT: According to Android Central, the iFixit teardown isn't clear on whether the smaller Pixel 3 is also a Samsung panel or not. Why did they not just post the Pixel 3 teardown findings, too?

https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/10/16/ifixits-pixel-3-xl-teardown-reveals-samsung-made-screen/

If you want that credit, you have until tomorrow to order. From the information I can find, there is nothing that suggests the smaller 3 has anything other then a Samsung panel. Looks like ifixit didn't go through the trouble initially to tear the 3 completely down like they did with the 3XL. My guess is we will have an answer to the panel question in a few hours once they fully tear it down and confirm.

Did they not go with LG at all or is this a case of dual sourcing?

I admit I’m rather shocked to hear these are Samsung panels again. I had thought they had invested in LG like Apple did and were going with LG this time. I don’t know why I had that impression. I’m losing track of all the stuff I’ve read.

Just because they invested doesn't mean the quality panel was there yet. They likely wanted to avoid the display issues of the pixel 2 and play it safe this year with Samsung. Gives LG time to correct the issues of their first OLEDs. Pixel 4 might have LG OLEDs.

While the iPhone 6/7/8 design left a lot of things to desire, the internals on Apple phones have always been pretty good and now their SoCs are a lot faster than anything on the Android side. That said, the speed difference doesn't really show in everyday use so no wonder the average Joe doesn't care too much. Nobody but tech enthusiasts will care if their favorite app takes a bit longer to open as long as the overall experience is smooth.

Google seems to make phones as if they are in the same vacuum as Apple where they are the only vendor. But that's not the case for Android. You can get a varying combination of SD845 + 4-10 GB RAM + 6+" display + decent camera module + near stock Android from so many different brands. All of those things 6 months earlier than the Pixels. Compared to those phones I see no reason why someone would opt for a Pixel 3 over a much cheaper phone from the other brands.
Other than timely updates, Google specific AI algorithms tied to things like the camera, and other hardware and software that Google keeps in house. So other than those things, yeah, why buy a Pixel. /s
[doublepost=1539714653][/doublepost]By the way, my Pixel 3 XL in white has shipped. Will arrive on Thursday.

I am totally happy with them going Samsung this year. I just hope it's true in the smaller Pixel 3, too. It seems like it would be, but would be nice to have that confirmation.

Great news. Samsung are the market leaders right now.

As for the UK getting deals, the best deal we will get from Google is them giving us a phone in exchange for bucket loads of money.

Yes, we need more articles calling out Google for its gesture navigation: https://www.androidauthority.com/iphone-vs-android-gestures-906731/

iPhone vs Android gestures: Who does it better?
I think the gestures found on iOS are miles better than those introduced in Android 9 Pie. Apple overhauled its mobile operating system to allow for the new navigation controls, which allowed the company to design everything to be fluid and natural.

In what could be seen as an act of playing catch up, Google’s implementation feels half-baked, primarily since the gestures still utilize the old software buttons instead of starting fresh. I feel like the controls found in Android 9 Pie are still being developed and can be immensely improved upon in Android Q.

The word 'half-baked' has never been more aptly used than when describing Google's gestures. It is half-baked, and it's made worse by the fact that Google is forcing this half-baked feature on users in the Pixel 3 models.

Google says gestures is the future of Android OS -- great, make them better. Literally copy Apple if you have to (who copied Palm). For all of Google's strength in software, Android Pie's gestures is a sad solution.

Outside of the Ars Technica review, I'm not really seeing reviews calling Google out on this. There needs to be more.
