... Where are all those apologists who said 4Gb of RAM is more than enough?

Still catching up, their apps refreshed

People I think had this belief that because it's "stock Android" it won't be an issue, but even stock phones like the OnePlus devices are getting more RAM, OnePlus 3T had 6GB RAM back in 2016. This whole thing about "stock Android" being lite and efficient is BS, and that's now coming out.

Think it was the iPad Air 2.

Kind of glad I cancelled my order. The software is what’s intriguing but not for $1000. Plus I love wearables and there isn’t anything on wearOS that comes close to an Apple Watch or galaxy watch.

Yep, that was the one!

The screen is so good, but the speakers really surprised me. I'm really not too picky with those, but the 2XL and iPhone X I have are better. Maybe I got a bad one, but who knows!

Oh, Stock Android does use less resources for OS related things. But the issue is apps, something an optimized OS won't change.

EDIT: Wow, I'm catching up on the news that some music and podcast apps just shut down unexpectedly due to the device needing to free up RAM. Where are all those apologists who said 4Gb of RAM is more than enough?
Curious to see a 4GB head to head showdown between the Pixel 3 & iPhone XS to see how RAM management compares.

Well my wife texted that my phone arrived. But, she didn’t hear fedex drop it off. (Apparently the dog did) She let our lab out and he got a hold of the box, opened it and bit a corner out of the box! I’m not sure what to do. I was hesitant on the color and the phone itself. Ugh!

Pics of the box and the perp!!

You didn't sign for it. It was damaged in shipment before you got it in your hands. The fact that it was your own dog that damaged it is just details.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even when you open an app from the app drawer, and when there's less RAM, those have to refresh, too, right? In other words, whether you go through the app switcher or are just opening apps regularly, more RAM means more of those stay open and ready to go, right?

If that's correct, it's idiotic to argue that RAM doesn't affect speed. If more of my apps stay open and are ready, the phone experience is faster. Sure, one second of refreshing isn't a big deal but if you're constantly seeing it, it adds up. No matter the difference, it's slower.

Google should be doing better. Anyone who apologizes for the 4GB of RAM decision is no better than Apple apologists who think Apple can do no wrong.

Not even the XL has 6GB of RAM (ala Samsung and the S9+) for $899-$999. Now that is cheap.

6GB of RAM would be plenty for the pixel 3 given how optimized stock android is. Going with 4GB is just lazy and corner cutting. Not sure what they were thinking.

Some of those speed tests where they recall games that were open 10 apps ago are pointless as that’s now how people typically use their phone. But keeping 5 apps in memory and not killing audio apps that are playing in the background should be the minimum.

Interesting.
I'll save my scrubbing for the dishes.

Not impressed by the extra work needed to keep scratches away, which is a shame because fingerprints looked to be taken care of with that gloss-free back...

Exactly what I was expecting.... Etched glass is actually very durable. I love the feel of it on the back of the pixel 3 and it hides fingerprints very well. I am wondering why other phone makers haven't done this yet.
I think One+ released a phone with a sandstone-like backing which repelled both scratches & fingerprints whilst providing grip. It's what I'd like to see more of instead of gloss.

I think the point was to show that the phone isn't scratching.

I watched a comparison yesterday, the iPhone X S Max obliterated the Pixel 3 XL. Pretty poor performance for the "lite and efficient stock Android". This is not an apps optimized thing, this is a RAM management thing.

Yeah I get that, but the work needed to rub out the scuffs shouldn't be expected of a smartphone owner.

Even fingerprints/smears - as much as I don't like them - are at least a microfiber wipe or few away from disappearing.

Very bad look for Google. Even Google Maps loaded slower on their latest flagship!...

My Mate 20 Pro review unit is running Android 9.0 Pie just like the Pixel 3 XL with the October 2018 patch, and thanks to its 6GB RAM I can multitask pretty well.

It’s only extra work under more extreme circumstances, ie purposely scratching your phone. And if someone wants to keep their phone in a pocket full of coins/keys, it’s their fault for not being careful.

I nipped in to a CPW just now to see an old colleague and asked if he had the Pixel 3 in and what he thought of it. He wasn’t fussed on it but he never was on anything lol.

Anyway he brought them out the back for me and I got a chance to have a look at the regular one this time.

Well now. The difference between that and the Pixel 2 is really quite staggering. It’s night and day different in terms of build quality and feel.
I was really surprised. I didn’t get that same feeling at all from the XL when I checked that out.
It was powered off (no charge) so he asked if I wanted it plugging in to have a proper play but I declined for fear of pre-ordering one lol. (Not our in UK until November. Typical Google).

Fantastic feel in the hand. I had another look at the XL and still felt very meh about that. Including the white colour which I really don’t think works this year on it.

The smaller one I had a feel of was all black and I actually really liked it. Which is surprising. Would like to see a not pink for comparison but I could rock black if needed.

Overall, pleasantly surprised.

Erm. Nope.
I’m the first to admit when I know the urge will get the better of me. Christ knows it’s happened enough in the past.

I’m currently very happy with iOS for the first time in a while and I placed my XR order yesterday which is coming on Friday and I’m pretty excited for it.

Also, if I do buy one. It won’t be now. With how fast the price dropped last year on the Pixel 2’s in the UK, there is no way I would adopt early. I also don’t want to give Google my money for a device that isn’t worth that amount and reward them for all the consistent missteps with these phones.

I am going to ignore all the above until after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, if you make it through that I'll believe you

I don't believe you'll last long with the iPhone XR

You American?
You can’t be British if you think I’ll end up buying it during Black Friday.
Black Friday here is not a one day event of rock bottom prices on decent items. It’s a week long sale of companies getting rid of their old sh*t inventory and stock.

So lots of old TV’s, electricals like vacuum cleaners, mircowaves and other stuff like that.

People here buy stuff thinking they’re getting a good deal when it couldn’t be further from it!
Any new mobile phone would never be included in a Black Friday event over here.

So you got yourself a deal! I’m telling you I won’t be buying one during that weekend!
But thanks anyway Mystic Meg ;).

Nope, I'm South African, I'm sure you have dealt with plenty of us up there

I guess Black Friday changes from country to country.

Nice.
And yeah it does. From my understanding, Americans do Black Friday and you can get a bloody good bargain on lots of types of items.
The UK use it as a way to sell of their old rubbish that no one actually needs but they feel they have to buy it as they think they’re getting a good deal. :D
