Most comprehensive, well thought out, articulated yet approachable camera comparison between these phones that I've seen yet. And after 14:30 minutes.....

SPOILER ALERT (if you haven't watched it yet)

It's a tie. 😂😂

TL;DR - Pixel has better telephoto, iPhone has better ultra wide, iPhone is generally still better at video (with exceptions and preferences), the front camera is a tie, as is the main sensor. This quote at about the 12:50 mark probably sums it up best:

And her conclusion:

Seriously though, really well done and worth a watch, regardless if you care about the iPhone or Pixel cameras.

Here is a nice 100 image gallery from this review from each phone for comparisons

I tried to use VTT on the iPhone and Pixel 6 to transcode part of what a podcast was saying. Lets just say both failed quite miserably. The iPhone missed complete words, would randomly clear full sentences of text and replace with what it was currently hearing. The pixel often stopped as though someone told it to clear, or do some other activity that wasn't being asked of it. Perhaps they are not intended to do this task, but the idea of these things taking notes for me in a class would be an awesome feature. Problem is, I would lose much of the class as both devices can't keep up.

Reading both of my devices this post, showing the results (screenshots below).

In this example (my voice over the phones sitting on a desk) both did quite well. Apple missed more, but I would have a hard time accepting anyones opinion that iOS is total garbage at understanding dictation.

That said, perhaps I have an accent or voice both phones like. Just saddened neither could really live record what was being said on the podcast I was testing them with.
So you did not try to use the recorder app on the phone? I would think this one would save it and then transcribe...

Wow. Be careful you do not let your phone's battery run completely out. This phone is shaping up to be a typical Pixel.

Thanks for the warning. However, they think this is a software bug and goodness knows we had a bunch on iOS when the 13's were released. So I don't think this is a bad release at all.

I took a little walk around to look at and grab a few snaps of Autumn foliage. Uh...what the heck?!?

This is a cherry blossom!

Color is excellent but it's not the kind of punchy contrasty photo iphones are now putting out. But considering this was taken in heavy shade I'm happy it turned out. Color accuracy is fantastic. This is portrait mode.

Okay, this is more like it! This is from the cherry tree that was next to the crazy cherry tree. The juxtaposition was a little weird.

From a different part of the street, I think this is also a cherry tree, but a sane one.

So met with a friend in Pittsburgh who has a 5. He was playing around with magic eraser trying to see if he could do all of my edit functions within the photos app using eraser to remove the light halo skipping using Lightroom.

Let's just say the results were interesting.
We now have a hidden "smoke" city above downtown Pittsburgh.

I also have a new wallpaper 😀

Hi. So what’s the consensus on the pixel 6 pro? I like it but at this point I may just clear up space for next years crop of phones from Samsung and Apple. Any issues with the 6 pro? Thanks

My opinion, as far as Android phones go, Pixel 6 or 6 pro all the way, nothing else exists. Samsung Galaxy S22? Don't care. I get excited for a new Galaxy phone the same as I do for a new Samsung washing machine, I don't. it's just another mass produced appliance. Nothing beats the fluid smoothness of the Pixel UI in the Android world, except maybe a custom ROM.

Now if you like iOS, well that's a sad story, I mean different story LOL Right now the best iPhone is the 13 Pro Max, it's a beast super-smartphone, top of the line. What's the iPhone 14 Pro Max gonna be like? Who knows, rumors are 99% BS, but the newest iPhone is always the best iPhone.

If anyone's shopping for a new smartphone right now, I'd recommend the Pixel 6 or iPhone 13 Pro Max, nothing else.

True. And really, why pay more?

But aren’t there rumors that the s22 will actually be a note device? I love my notes!! If it’s true I’m buying it

Camera has been a bit of a disappointment so far.

My GF is a pretty good photographer, and she isn't caring for the processing of the photos.

They seem very inconsistent so far. Some photos have a low budget smartphone, hazy lack of dynamic range. Then others go the opposite direction, and pump up the HDR so high, that they look artificial.

When it nails a balanced photo, it is great, but it seems like it takes a couple tries, and lots of tweaking of the temperature, and exposure sliders.

Hopefully there is a software update.

That's been my experience too, I've been having a very mixed bag. It's no where near as consistent as my 13 Pro.

Just sent back my Pixel 6 (reg/256) today.

Observations/notes:

- excellent apparent quality, but big, and heavy...not dealbreakers tho', doesn't bother me
- for me personally the lack of Face ID is a dealbreaker ("flagship" phones need flagship features)...winter's coming i.e. glove season...fingerprints/PINs/patterns are a PITA
- had no real issues with the much-maligned finger sensor, a bit slow/small target area but ok
- cool colors and cam array are great, but you MUST put a case on this VERY slippery fish, but then the phone just looks like any other big black slab with a fugly plastic case on it
- already have Pixel 5 (great Pixel 3 before that), pic quality essentially the same as 6, 5 is great form factor, google offered $300 CAD trade (was $500 3 weeks ago dammit!)...6 not worth the upgrade
- still have great OP7T, 2 year old phone has rocket fast finger sensor AND face ID, ok cam is not Pixel-grade but "pretty good" regardless
- have new iphone 12 but that's a bit irrelevant, iOS is a total unuseable mess, use it as Airtag manager (airtags are awesome!)

Summary
- so at the end of the day the CAD $929 didn't make much sense given I have 2/3 great phones already even if the 5 was going back on trade. With 2 good current Android phones, 1 big 1 small, I have some flexibility. With the 6 I just have a bigass boat anchor in my pocket. BUT when they add Face ID I'm all-in, just not this year.

It's so far a success in my opinion. All the difficult photos that I would hope would turn out as "keepers" have. The only things I'm most aware of needing improvement is the curvature of the display and auto brightness is still a bit twitchy, though it's slowly improving. Both could benefit from a bit of refinement to match what my s21 Ultra has.

There are no issues I have run into yet but I am a bit slowed down from putting it through the usual tests I do. I haven't been able to call my dad yet so I don't know if it passes the "dad test" for call quality. He's needed to keep his line clear because he's waiting for various phone calls.

The one thing of concern I've run into with Samsung is that sometimes when you're on a web site and have to submit information into a site's form, the interface will have a fatal design flaw that renders me unable to enter data efficiently so I have to grab my iphone. I can't remember the site, maybe it was Velvet Caviar or Converse, but don't hold me to that. Anyway I got to the part where I had to enter my birthday to finish creating my account. And on the Samsung I had to go through this ungodly unwieldy calendar interface. I was born in the 60's, so I would have had to flip through page after page on the calendar to get back to my birth year to enter it. There was nothing on the interface to allow me to quickly flip through the years.

So I grabbed my iphone XR and the form came up and I got an interface that allowed me to easily pick my birth year. But I decided not to create my account just then.

After I got my Pixel I went to the site and got a usable form.

I am very confused because both are Android phones but I am having different experiences on them. I'm pretty sure I was using Duck Duck Go on the two Android phones.

But it could have been Samsung internet browser. I suppose I can customize my Samsung to flow more smoothly but by default, I run into more little surprise barriers to action that have had me go to my iphone. So far, I'm not seeing that on my Pixel. But it's still early days, yet.

Still, if you can wait, I don't see why not. S22 Ultra will be released in a few months. It looks very promising. The new iphone will probably be a redesign. It all should be interesting.

My 13 Pro, in the month I was using it, left me with a similar impression. It did terribly CGI things sometimes, especially to the sky.

I think that's pretty much plenty of people's results. A lot of very good photos where you look at it and you're amazed and others where you scratch your head a little bit and wonder what happened here? But the one thing that we have on our side is software updates are coming and this camera is going to improve. I have no doubts about that.. and yes I agree they should have a face unlock. Although no issues at all here with the FPS, it should have been additional feature, especially on the pro model...

Google would be so smart to do this asap. Seems the number one complaint is the FP reader so this could solve that.
Fingerprint unlock is fast and works great for me but with winter and glove season coming up I sure would appreciate this!
