Yeah your right, Google had an update to fix so not too unlock with the eyes closed. The real issue was why did Google first release it without that feature! Apple had in place since 2017 so should have been standard for Google to implement from the get-go.

Another reason Google may not have brought face unlock to the 5 and 6 is to keep the minimum bezel with hole-punch camera only. The forehead bezel on the 4XL was prominent with the face unlock!
Ah yes agreed..and I would give up some bezel look for soli..I was upset when I first heard they were abandoning the project ..I sold my 4 XL soon after I was so upset lol

Will the app developers resist to implement face unlock with lack of Soli sensor? My understanding is that Pixel 6/6 Pro does not have Soli.
I might be wrong.
Soli was initially a one-off Google project that Google then hoped they could use going forward - but the face unlock received such criticism (undue in the end imo) that Google thought against implementing the same with the Pixel 5 release. Soli actually ended up providing secure biometric face unlock on the 4/4XL, much like FaceID with Apple.

For the Pixel 6 / 6 Pro, as I understand it, this does not have Soli with the new Tensor chip so therefore cannot have full biometrics secure face unlocking. The face unlock will have to be basic front camera-driven unlocking of the phone, much like Samsung and OnePlus have similarly offered for a long time. I would be pleased if Google can add this into a security software patch update in December.
Happy to be corrected on this, but I think that is the situation.

Has anyone tried "One Handed Mode" on the Pixels running Android 12? What was Google thinking? Unless I'm missing something really, really obvious all it achieves is dropping the viewing area in half vertically and you can't even scroll up. I tried to make a call in OHM and found I couldn't even get the call button or dial pad to display.

I don't have a Sammy phone but I've read they have a much better implementation. I have owned two Huawei phones one of which I broke (Huawei Mate SE, one of my favorite phones) and the Honor 9X. The Honor 9X which is a BIGLY phone 6.7" has a nice implementation. If you gesture from the top left to the lower right the display area drops to the lower right of the screen albeit much smaller but you still have the entire viewing area intact. If you are a left handed person you can do the same to the lower left of the screen.

I was expecting Google to do something similar but after a couple of minutes trying to understand Googles interpretation of OHM, I finally gave up.
Horrible. You can't do anything with it. I use it now to bring down the notification area when I'm on the web or somewhere where I'm unable to use my Nova gestures..

I wonder if they could combine camera- based face unlock with a verbal password. I know voice recognition isn't at all foolproof, but maybe that combined with a face could at least be a little more secure?

Or maybe there could be camera-based unlock that also uses a way to track eyes doing a pattern

I don’t think a Face Unlock implemented using solely the front camera will provide the level of security necessary to be an authentication tool. The Pixel 4 XL had the same (or similar) type of hardware Apple uses to provide a digital ‘mapping’ vs. 2D image.

Brilliant ...love the photos I need you to swing by help me take some quality car pics ...love the car too ! So it's a recent purchase
Thanks, yes it is the newer daily driver. I am waiting on availability of the current generation Avant (wagon) which is hard to come by plus I didn’t want to go brand new until Pandemic issues were figured out. So I got this pre-owned sedan since I like the styling and interiors quite a bit. Punched up the power a bit with a tune and plan a couple other minor updates. I think I will keep it longer than I originally expected. Been a great car over the past year of ownership. Plenty of life left in it, and nice not having Payments!!

It shares the stable with an older A6 Avant, also supercharged, an 80s Mercedes 190e, and an E46 M3 Convertible.

Looks like you have a fun toy too, Haven’t driven any of the newer M models after the E90 series.

Combining the camera-based face unlock with a verbal password that recognises each voice would be great!
Actually unlocking using just voice alone would be cool, would have to require Google Assistant recognising individual voices with accents - we're not quite there with tech yet but also sounds like a potential security nightmare!

For me it was due to speed and accuracy on the Pixel 4XL face unlock. It would literally face unlock as I'm picking it off the table so ready to use immediately. There is nothing wrong with Apple's FaceID, that has been highly efficient and accurate since that X patch - it is just that Google managed to make theirs quicker whilst being just as accurate, that is in my usage experience.
Great points! :) .

I would be curious to see if I liked the full unlock at a glance, or keeping the swipe. Many times I just want to see notifications and not go into the phone.

It is nice that the Pixel does let you set some of that.

Google removed the Face Unlock shortly before the 6/6 Pro launch, it had appeared in marketing images prior to that, so their initial plan was to actually launch with it by the looks of it.

& @samcraig

Hopefully the implementation would be better, but I remember this feature from Mac OS 9. I actually had a micro cassette recording of Steve Jobs saying “My voice is my password” (from a keynote), and was able to use that to unlock my Mac.

I wouldn’t want someone to covertly record me on an iPhone or pixel and use that voice recording to unlock my phone or device ;) .

But combined with a camera-based unlock might help?

Also, Steve "stole" that from Sneakers. "My voice is my passport"

Yeah Samsung’s implementation has always been the clear winner for me. Just a miniature version of the whole UI, aligned with whichever side your hand is on/is most comfortable. A no-brainer solution. It’s kind of fun to use too since it’s like having a smaller phone for a moment.

I’ve managed the odd situation with the iPhone version but it creates a confusing juxtaposition between up and down swipes that usually turns it into a frustrating involuntary gaming moment for me. And precisely when you need things to work too, as those situations tend to occur when you’re traveling and need to quickly find a QR code or booking number while the other hand is busy holding a suitcase or something.

Sorry to hear Google didn’t manage better on that front.

No kidding about these pandemic issues with everything and the car market ..I've been a fan of Audi and never had the pleasure of owning one ..one day for sure ..love the Avant wagon good luck finding one haha ...I'm low-key and didn't get the M model just went with a 540 x Drive but I was close on a CPO M550 but was turned off with warranty and repair cost ...so waited 3 months for my build and I've been enjoying this one since June ..

Apologies peeps don't want to derail ...

I mean the other solution is to get a tattoo of a QR code, or implant an RFID chip and use that, right?
Yes I need an RFID chip. If it can breeze me through TSA and get me in my phone super fast, why not ;) .

Or improved and implemented the way it was meant lmao
Yeah good and solid choice on the car! I am more of a fan of the larger cars as I enjoy road trips and just the quiet comfort, and good German car highway speed power for when it is needed.

I hope to be down in @Tig Bitties area in a couple months to try out his brewery suggestion. I love my drives to Detroit (oddly) and Indianapolis through Chicagoland.

It's a great idea and we need more road trips ..everyone let's visit @Tig Bitties spot ...love a good brewery ...perfect Pixel photo opportunities...

Could just be coincedecne, but the FPS on this Cloudy White 6 Pro seems worse than my other Pixel 6's.
I have set up my thumb's twice too but this phone always gives me a 'not recognised' first before unlocking whereas the other phones were pretty solid despite what your read on the interwebs 😛.

I have deleted and reset up my FPS on my 6 Pro 3 times in the last 24 hours. It is still a hit and miss for me.

It's nit been much of an issue for me so far. But has started to get a little annoying on this device.
You definitely shouldn't have to keep readding as many times as you are! Nightmare :(
