GM Sorry to hear this I’m a little confused on the situation so certain type of smart phone displays can cause migraines or headaches?
The 13 Pro does not cause, but the 12 Pro does?
From what fellow MR migraine sufferers and I have been able to learn, the pulse width modulation that is used to dim OLED displays runs at a frequency that’s low enough to cause eye pain, eye strain and/or various kinds of migraine symptoms in people who are sensitive to it. In me, it can be as severe as a seizure that mimics a stroke in some nasty ways.
Mostly these days it’s just eye pain.
I have not yet really had any problems with the Android phones. But from iPhone X up to, but not including iPhone 11 Pro, I had nasty reactions to Apple’s implementation of OLED. Some other people here can’t use ANY OLED phones at all. So I’m lucky.
I was able to use iPhone 11 Pro without eye strain or pain or headaches. I did have weird neurological symptoms that made me concerned I had MS and was planning to get that looked into, when Covid hit. But then I got rid of that phone and my symptoms went away.
IPhone 12 made my eyes water and sting. I returned that. I got 12 Pro Max and that was fine. It was just a bear to carry. I tried 12 mini. At first it made me feel like was I was being punched in the eye every time I used it. Fortunately the pain immediately stopped when I wasn’t looking at it. But it is such a pleasure to carry in my pockets, so I figured I’d just use it for brief functions but always have it on me. I still enjoyed the big phones at home. I loved the 12 Pro Max camera. Meanwhile somehow I found myself adjusted to the 12 mini and became able to use it normally!
And that’s been fine, going between the 12 Pro Max and the 12 mini. But then I traded my 12 Pro Max for the 13 Pro. And I got some eye aches and felt a little dizzy when I used the 13 Pro at first. But then that settled down.
So then I picked my Mini 12 back up…and find I can’t use it again. It’s like being punched in the eye again. But this time, the pain didn’t stop when I put the phone down. It didn’t stop when I took two Tylenol and two aspirin together. It didn’t stop when I went to sleep and woke up.
I am typing this on my 13 Pro just fine. I can’t look at my 12 mini. The sensitivity is increasing ridiculously. I suppose if I knew math I could tell you if it was increasing exponentially or logarithmically. Lol.
I’m so screwed because I really counted on the big phone-little phone team.
I am just a few too many days too late discovering this. I can’t return the 13 Pro and get my 12 Pro Max back and try to go back to the way things were.
The 13 Pro seems fine, and I do like it so I will give it a go on its own the rest of this week. I did turn off Pro Motion. It’s set to 60 frames per second via Accessibility settings. That does get rid of the slight motion sickness sensation. But that didn’t bother me too much.
Since the pixel 6 Pro display will have similar settings as the 13 Pro I hope I can switch between them and not get headaches. I’m definitely going for the 6 Pro now if I go for a Pixel at all. That’s to better match the displays.
But let’s see if I get through this week first. I may end up running back to the mini and hoping I can get readjusted again. I was very excited about the 13 Pro but now I guess I regret it. Not because of the phone, if I weren’t suffering I’d be thrilled with my purchase. But because I’m too sensitive to handle the display differences.
Sorry for the autobiography. It was a little complicated to explain.
