iPhone 13 Pro Max

Pixel 6 Pro

The results are consistent with what I’ve seen of night shots on the 13 Pro. The iPhone 13 Pro doesn’t switch into the official night mode as readily as the 12 Pro/Pro Max did. I think it was a purposeful decision by Apple (and probably has to do with the lenses they chose, too) to preserve the genuine mood/look of dimly lit scenes by not illuminating every shadow aggressively like some night modes have been doing. I’m sometimes madly loving this.

But I’m so used to phones turning night into day the last couple of years that it’s been an adjustment accepting that many of my 13 Pro night shots aren’t inferior. They’re just a different presentation and closer to the actual mood in front of me.

Honestly, for years I’ve been frustrated with recent night modes ruining photos of Christmas lights because they blow out the delicate little lights. So I’m looking forward to shooting Christmas light scenes at the town Winter Festival with the 13 Pro this year.

That being said…I’m liking that Pixel shot more. In this particular instance the balance is there and it just looks good!

I’d like to think Detroit Borg would know how to activate it though. And I thought the iPhone auto enabled it’s night mode?
A lot of other Apple fans are seemingly dubious about this shot :p
The 13 Pro really resists going into nite mode. Even more than the 12, so in some situations with good foreground lighting, it won’t turn on by default.

Like I said, I am happy to do my own tests when it comes in, I am looking forward to it As it is fun for me to benchmark phones and such For my own use and photo comparison.

::Edit:: great post by @GrumpyMom essentially mirroring my experiences and expectations.

On Pixel, I do like how Night Mode is a separate function (at least on my 3) and not automatic. I too enjoy taking Christmas light pictures, and want the twinkle and natural lighting it provides to a scene, not have the shadows blown out to daylight levels which dilutes the effect.

The part of Google’s presentation dealing with their efforts at color science inclusivity apparently was very polarizing, unfortunately and I saw a lot of resentful comments in various places on it that frankly made me very sad as a “woman of color”.

For those who aren’t aware, I am biracial and multi ethnic with a mix of brown, yellow and white. Outside of winter, when I look like a desaturated corpse of indeterminate hue, my own skin is a tricky light olive tan that even my 13 Pro has turned grayish brown in one photo I shared to the forum where my hand was visible. Frankly that’s an improvement because I’ve often been turned a weird greenish yellow even by professional photographers.

The frustration for people of any color, and especially people with darker skin tones, to get good color representation is real. Many shades of blonde hair for years looked green on earlier iPhones. I’ve had white friends and family come out astoundingly pinkish red in photos. Black and brown skinned friends and family have had details of their features obliterated or their beautiful skin tones turned orange, yellow or green tinged.

So I am so excited that Google put so much effort into trying to do better for skin tones. I don’t know if this will throw off other colors in the landscape or not. I just appreciate the attempt and hope the development continues. Even conventional cameras often fail with skin tones, so this is one area where AI driven computational photography could excel.

Great post @GrumpyMom

I feel that Apple Deep fusion helped quite a bit starting in the 11 Pro , and I seem to have better results with my 13 Pro for my own selfies / shots of various ethnic groups (I too am mixed race with darker skin). I have been turned grey by various photo sources over the years too.

Looking forward to seeing what the Pixel 6 can do. I think Apple has made improvements quietly, but Google openly and proudly embracing the subject. Apple has been showcasing quite a variety of different ethnicities in their sample photos and demos but hasn’t touched on the subject. Google has been a champion in publicly addressing this

Let’s not forget that it wasn’t long ago that certain ethnic groups in google photos would be accidentally categorized as a non human species. Google clearly had to do some spin control on that, and has come out really well by putting so much energy into this subject. So many people around the world have various skin tones. There are even various shades of white that I swear my iPhone doesn’t properly capture either.

My Pixel 6 Pro came in yesterday courtesy of TeamPixel. Did a quick unboxing. Can‘t post or talk about pictures from the camera yet due to embargo rules but I have been enjoying this phone so far.
Wow it does take a long time to boot up! I saw someone make that comment. I think it was on Reddit. The Stormy color looks sweet. I’m disappointed you didn’t try the case on it.

It did take awhile to boot up!! That might just be because of the first boot up but I’ll pay attention to that next time I restart it. I’ll also take a picture of it with the case on when I get home :)

I have a 6 Pro on order but the curved screen has got me a little freaked out seeing photos like this. I feel like stuff is too close to the edge. I really love flat screens like the one on my iPhone 13 Pro which is freaking fantastic. I hope I have not made a mistake in not getting the Pixel 6 over the 6 Pro like I was originally going to do. Our local Best Buys have not put the demo models out yet so I can't see them in person yet. I guess I can always return it should it be a problem.

I have both iOS and Android. My Android phone is in a entirely different league with voice dictation. It is so bad on my XS max, that I am hesitant to even use dictation at all, since it often means going back to correct words, even if I clearly enunciate every word.

Meanwhile I can be walking down a noisy street with Galaxy buds in, and Google rarely misses a beat.

Just my personal experience, but there is no question that google is far ahead in the field of speech recognition.
While dictation on my iPhone 13 Pro is ok and very usable there is no doubt Google's is better.

What part of the screen "freaks you out"?
I'm not exactly a huge fan of curved screens, but the benefits of the Pro are ones I don't want to miss out on. But I'm not freaked out by it... It's going to be perfectly useable?

Oh thank you! I’m thinking of ordering a Google case, even a green one even though I got the Stormy phone. I’m just not sure how that’s going to look. There’s a photo depicting all the cases on all the Pro colors on Google store but it’s not always wise to trust store renders.

It’s in the post: the part about content appearing too close to the edge. That can be a concern with curved displays. I don’t think it will be a problem on this phone. I haven’t noticed it on my S21 Ultra, so it is possible to have a curved glass and not lose content. I’m with you in agreeing that the benefits of the Pro aren’t ones I’d want to miss. My preference for a flat display is moderate in this case. It’s more of priority with the Samsung phones that are compatible with the S Pen. And even then…it’s not a deal breaker. :)

One thing has me thinking it's customizing on the Pixel... I just love how we can change stuff with Goodlock on Samsung... I'm not looking to unlock bootloader so not many options..

Oh… ok. I guess the benefit of a curved screen is that content does go all the way up to the edge, no? Otherwise it kinda defeats the purpose?

Thankfully the curve itself seems fairly tame compared to when the curved screen trend was in its peak.

Of course it will be perfectly usable. And freaked out is a little overboard on my part but I am concerned with the appearance that things are too close to the edge and falling off to the sides. Plus other shots I have seen there are shadows in the curved area and weird reflections. I have never owned a curved screen so maybe photos are not doing it justice but there seems to be a lot of hate towards them. I don't want to miss out on the benefits either which is why I purchased the Pro but every so often I see a photo or overview video and it makes me question my decision. Hopefully all my concerns will be gone once I start using it.

It’s a benefit unless it’s so close it gets clipped and bent around the edge. I know I’ve seen that before but I don’t remember which of my Samsungs did that. It was not good.

Okay so what mental issue do I have that I keep going to the Google store trying to preorder all the colors and storage sizes just to see what’s now available? 😆 I have preordered exactly what I would have chosen even with zero glitches and no pressures.

My initial successful order was for 512 GB, but that was just me thinking nobody would want to pay the extra for 512 gb, so there would be one for me! And indeed, it went through! I thought I was done. Lol then Google canceled my order, those stinkers! I’m still salty about that.

But 256 gb is the sweet spot pricewise and for my usage. The first phone I tried was 256 GB white and that was a salute to Snowball as I didn’t have a clear color preference at the time. I was partial to the black trim though so I’m happy with Stormy and likely would have changed my order to Stormy anyway.

Lol but I keep peeking! And yes I even peek at the 256 GB Stormy that I’ve already ordered. I guess I’m still shocked at what a hot mess that all was. I don’t know why. And I know Google had to have loved having people fighting the system. Nothing says “Take my money!” louder than my desperation yesterday.

Ah but I love new tech season. Maybe someday I’ll even get a new MacBook Pro or an iPad.

Yeah I hear you re the shadow. I've also seen that. Be interesting to see how it looks in the flesh. :)

Curved edges often don’t photograph or video well. And there can be some distortion or shadows on the side. Some people are greatly bothered. Some people quickly learn to “unsee” them. I tend to be in the greatly bothered crowd. I didn’t like the look on the S7-S9 series especially.

It’s hard to say what the case will be here because apparently the curve isn’t identical to that on the S21 Ultra. It’s very close though. Unfortunately I won’t have time to hunt one down in Best Buy. I’ll be posting here regularly but I will also be on the go nonstop doing stuff all the rest of the week and weekend.

Don't think I've seen anyone talk about the seemingly lack of "pro" camera controls on the new Pixels. I'm sure the camera will be great, but it's about time they added the kind of controls you get on a Samsung.

It is an odd omission with the "pro" moniker.

It's not even that. We all know how great the camera on a Pixel is and with new hardware it should be a nice step up again. So you'd think by now Google would equip it with plenty of manual options.

But Google might think that would give the impression their AI/Computation photography abilities are not good enough if people need to adjust things...lol. Just a thought.

I just got back from Best Buy and they had both display phones. Here's my quick impressions. They both look and feel nice. Neither phone feels cheap.

I can also say that both phones are nearly identical in size when you put the Pixel 6 on top of the 6 Pro. The Pro is about a half inch taller.

The screen takes up a little more room. The curved screen isn't so outlandish. Its a subtle curve.

Maybe it's just me but the scrolling with both phones were the same. Both phones were black.

I will try and upload the pics later.
