Here's what 5.0.1 is doing with a 3Gs and 4s

Updated both our phones, charged to 100% and unplugged them.

My Wife's 3Gs has been on standby for 8hrs and had zero use.
Losing 1% of charge for each our of standby. Her email is set to check 3 accts once per hour and her location services are on.

My 4s was on standby for 4hrs before I began to use it and it was at 97% so it's just a little less than 1% per hour of standby.

I then used my 4s, surfing, taking photos, editing photos, listening to music at the same time and even texted for a while with some family for about 2hrs straight.

Now I'm at 2.5hrs of usage and 6.5hrs of standby and holding at 73%. So even if I go by my wife's numbers of 1% per hour of standby, I should be at perhaps 93%. So with use, it looks like it burns through about 10% per hour when in multitasking use. So I should be able to get my desired 6-8hrs of use with plenty of power (20%) time left to have it sit around on standby.

Note: I have my email on manual checks only and the above is with location services on.

Not sure what this is compared to pre-update use, but I will know more once I go through a week of life and normal day to day use.

So far though, it seems to be good.

On your nine
Post 5.0.1 update, I thought I saw no diff, maybe even worse. But I took a deep breath, drained battery entirely, recharged overnight and today, with heavier than normal use, it looks better. Back to my iP4 kinda better.

Now, I wasn't seeing vampire draining on my bat before, so I'm not coming from that camp. I was in the "a day of moderate use" and recharge nightly group. I'm following this issue because I don't think I could've gotten through a day of heavy usage without a recharge. I hope I'm past that, but testing will tell.

I'm very happy with the way Apple is dealing with this...openly and directly. Even stating that they are still working on battery issues for those still in pain. It's refreshing IMHO...

I never had any battery life issues with iOS 5 but I voted that it 5.0.1 ruined the battery so that I could see the results from the poll.;)

Oh, and I haven't updated to 5.0.1 either; I'm jailbroken and waiting for an untethered release.

sad thing is that there was a poll results link on the lower right so you didn't have to sway the statistics.

My battery life seems a little better, but I'm not entirely sure until I give the phone a chance to drain down. so far its seems every standby hour it's dropping 1%

Dang that is sad, all my life I thought I had to vote first to see the poll results. hehee. I'll look for that next time..

I honestly thought that was intentional soo as not to sway the results by peeking at them first before voting.:D

I use Golfshot GPS most days (uses the GPS pretty much all the time to tell you how far you are from the hole) and used it today, first time after upgrading to iOS 5.0.1.

On an average round, my battery will go from 100% to ~60%. This is a 40% drain that I'm used to (and pretty pleased with given that the GPS is on for 3 hours nearly non-stop), and iOS 4 had the exact same drain.

Well my round today, the battery drained 40%, just like it would do on iOS 4. However, I've noticed the battery draining in general use when I don't use my phone much.

So in intense usage, the battery is the same. But the battery seems to drain quickly if you aren't doing much intensively.

^^ makes sense... standby time went from 300hrs to 200hrs on the 4S.

Probably a combination of the new sensor for siri's "lift to talk" and pulling down data from iCloud

Guess We Have to Live with It

No change for me and the 4S is eating about 1/3 more juice than my IP4 did for the same usage + rare Siri usage on the 4S. Since I "gift" my phones when I upgrade and I use a protective case anyway, I'm switching from the Otterbox Defender to a Mophie Juice Pack to save the 4S's battery longevity and have AppleCare + as insurance for using the less protective case.

My battery has gone good ... heres what you do ...

(1) On iOS 5 only, do a full reset then setup as new
(2) Do update to 5.0.1
(3) add your icloud/mail/apps...etc
(4) Add ALL your APPS but DO NOT OPEN/SETUP ANY OF THEM !!
(5) Use your phone for couple of days with only mail setup

You will see that phone performs very well and standby time is very good ... this is how the standby hours, etc is calculated by every mobile company ( I added the mail extra, even that should not be there)

I have icloud at fetch 15 mins and gmail at push...location services are all off except Mobile Network

Usage : 2 Hours, 53 Minutes (Mostly calls, sms, etc)
Standby : 1 Day, 9 Hours
Battery : 51%

(Will post screenshot in a bit)

*** THIS WAS JUST TO TEST A BIT ON THE STANDBY TIME ***

My battery performance hasn't changed overall except the battery calibration seems to have gone AWOL.

I've done a DFU install of 5.0.1, set the phone up as new, and have calibrated the battery (with 5.0.1). If I charge it up so it reads 100%, and leave it on the charger, after some time (few hours maybe) it'll drop to 95% despite still being on the charger. Take it off the charger, reboot the phone, and it then reads 99%.

When I first got my 4S the battery life was a vast improvement over my 3GS.

Charge it up to 100% before I go to bed and it was still at 92-95% in the morning. Over the same period my 3GS would have dropped to 88-90%.

Then, suddenly - and I mean suddenly, like one night it was OK the next it wasn't - it was only 80-82% in the morning - worse even than my 3GS.

I tried turning off a load of Location Service stuff in System Services (compass, diagnostics, etc.) but it made no difference. I tried calibrating the battery by running it until the phone turned itself off then charging to 100% about 3 times - no difference.

The u/g to 5.0.1 has not made any difference.

Whatever the cause of this it is an odd problem as some people have had issues from day one, some have never had issues, and some, like me, didn't have issues but now do.

One other thing I've noticed, is that whereas before the phone wouldn't shut itself down until the battery was at 1%, last night it shutdown at 4%

I notice that someone has christened this issue "batterygate" which seems appropriate after "attenagate" and it is yet another big embarrassment for Apple.

I wonder if this will actually turn out to be faulty batteries as it seems that turning off functions that run in the background using Location Services/GPS doesn't seem to have any major impact?

Battery calibration and timing seem way off. I had 3% left at 3PM so i wanted to run to 0 before plugging in. The 97% lost throughout the day took only 4.5hrs of little/no use but that last 3% lasted for a 50min local video file. its such a mess.

Has anyone mentioned the "life to talk" sensor before? Is it possible that the sensor always being "on" is what's causing battery issues on the 4S?

It's actually worse for me. I didn't touch my phone once today and it's already down to 79%.

Battery calibration and timing seem way off.

Agreed.

90 minutes after I took my phone off the charger today I was still at 100%. Another 90 minutes later and I was at 93%. No usage (just sitting on my desk) in that time other than incoming messages.

I didn't really have major battery issues before as I would get 5 hours of gaming, texting, and 3G Internet use easily (with 8 - 9 hours of standby) but today after being on 5.0.1 for a full day with an overnight charge I'm at 55% battery remaining with 3 hours of usage (same as described above) and 5 hours 15 min of standby.
