Apple’s OLED roadmap lists the mini getting an OLED screen in 2027: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/02/21/apple-oled-roadmap/

So the mini 7 as rumored will be a minor spec bump, and the mini 8 in three years will get an OLED screen. (I’m assuming there won’t be any new mini in between.)

In any case, there are no signs of it being discontinued, rather the opposite.

I’ll likely stick with the mini 5 until the OLED version, since I dislike pretty much everything they changed for the mini 6.

I'm envious of your mini 5, as I think that body style would be a very comfy one-handed e-reader.
You can still buy refurbished ones in near-mint condition. I rebought one earlier this year (€360 plus tax for the 256 GB cellular) after I broke the screen of the previous unit, it was like new.

2027 would be a good year for me to upgrade my mini 6. By that time mine will be 4 years old ( I purchased it May 2023) and ready for an upgrade.

if sales are strong for the ipad mini, i don't think they'll let it die, may be delayed launch of a new model at some point

To paraphrase Foghorn Leghorn: “He keeps a-throwin’ ‘em and you keep-a duckin’ ‘em! It was a joke, son!“
Except was only half-kidding.

WHEN the iPhone reaches iPad mini dimensions for $1000+ more, how does Apple explain such a price difference? The camera?

Even someone like Cook should see a problem there.

But, the truth is, unless sales of either device fall off precipitously, he won’t see a problem at all.

an 8" 4x3 screen is significantly larger than a 6.7" screen with the tall & skinny phone ratio. iPhone also pays a price for miniaturization, magsafe, ultrawideband chip, cellular radio, oled, face id, triple rear camera, titanium frame, taptic engine, promotion display

that's like new cars with a thin 30" screen and saying who needs a computer monitor

Not with the Folds. The Z-Fold 6 and the new Pixel Fold 9 are pretty close.

I’ve voted “no announcement or mention”. Hope I’m wrong, as an iPad mini 7 feels like a day 1 purchase for me.

(My 6 is going strong, but any combination of more RAM, screen improvement, extended battery life, and probably Apple intelligence would have me upgrade)

Not going to happen. The mini is also used in the commercial sector.
Which is a reason why they’ll be built down to a price - premium features may be left out of the mini which will leave us wondering just how popular a mini pro would have been

Cool poll! I’m leaning towards the September 10th event too. It just seems like the right timing based on past launches. Can’t wait to see what they bring to the iPad mini this time!

I used to love my original mini to go along with tiny iPhones. I see no reason for mini, my 13 PM is large enough. I will keep iPad Pro as my tablet.

The 6th Generation iPad mini DID share a keynote event with the iPhone 13, if memory serves. Though, it wouldn't surprise me if Apple wanted to leave the September event purely for the Watch and the iPhone. So, I put October.

I'm just hoping the day doesn't come when the iPad mini is replaced by a premium foldable iPhone. That'd make me extremely sad. The iPad mini is my iPad of choice. I've lived with 9.7-11-inch iPads before; they're just not as versatile for me.

Isn’t there usually some more rumours about design and hardware specs at this point if it’s released this year?

You can easily argue a Mini update in September because it will likely have an A18, so they’ll release alongside the iPhone updates. That also would probably mean minimal/no other changes. Otherwise, it’s an October event alongside the Macs.

I have no iPad mini so I would agree on a day 1 purchase.

Also because I quite literally (and bitterly) have been waiting for the 7 to come out, the 6 was already pretty convincing and awesome but it was 2024 so I was like: "What if the 7 is like amazing" and after the WWC I was hoping it to have Apple Intelligence.

Even if it doesn't in the end, hey any improvement like battery, RAM, FaceID or quite literally anything, will def be a purchase.

I agree, many do prefer using an actual "big" panel as a tablet. My best friend has seen the mini and said that it does look like "an oversized phone"

Indeed, tiny tablets are just too wonderful for me to let go like that.
I would also be quite upset, and I'm also hoping for it to be a repeat of the iPhone 13 event. Otherwise at LEAST an October announcement would be ok. but as long as they STILL release an iPad mini.
