You'd be surprised - once you rack the machine up with all the necessary gear, they're pretty much the same footprint.
yeah, i guess i'm not familiar with the entire package required of you on these types of gigs.
the computer, even cMP, might be the small part.

DBMS development, running Linux most of the time. It's an almost ideal machine for my purposes.

Went for General purpose, but do gaming (mostly on os x), bit of music and graphics stuff, plus the kids do school stuff and gaming on them. The wife sticks to the ipad.

I don't make money off my Mac Pro, but I use it for work that I do that requires it mainly photography and 4K video. It just faster to a lot of the work on the desktop mostly even during compiling sessions where the fan is going full blast, I can still focus. Same cannot be said for my notebook.

It quite a good machine, though I'm a bit annoyed that despite all these promises, Apple has kind of neglected it. I used to play games on it, but I have a separate gaming computer now which is sadly about twice as fast as my Mac Pro, and many times faster in the graphics department.

I also have a "classic" one that I intended to sell, but honestly it feels as fast as the current one even after almost eight years.

These are some single-serving mac pro rolling racks (not my personal stash but i've used these plenty of times over the years); they roll off the truck, i take off the front and back lids, plug in power, a few network runs, and video out and I'm good to go.

You'll note that the fancy nMPs have a few more bells and whistles but the actual footprint is unchanged.

Have you upgraded this 2008 with max RAM, SSD, and a modern GPU? They are still very capable machines.
I am still using my 3.2GHz Mac Pro 3,1 bought new in 2008 when I was doing professional video editing & photography. I gave that up about 3-4 years ago but the system is still an awesome computer with the upgrades that I have made over the years. I now have a 2 x 1TB RAID-0 SSD on PCIe card plus 56GB 667MHz RAM plus 4-port USB 3.0 card & 3 x 8TB & 1 x 4TB internal storage plus home flashed 4GB GTX680. It's still very capable of HD video editing in Premier & After Effects & FCPX plus Lightroom & Photoshop. The power supply died about 4 years ago & it cost me £150 for a new one but all in all it's been fantastic value for money & still has many years of life left in it.

Use my 2008 MP every day as a remote employee doing UX design, remote usability testing, and some development. Also acts as a media server for my home. No issues with it so far (had it 4-5 years). Running Sierra (mostly just to work with airpods), upgraded with USB 3, 2 SSD in raid 0, 2 media storage drives in raid 1, 7950, and lots of slow cheap ram. It was inexpensive, performs like a champ at anything I throw at it, and that's all I really need.

I use mine for music production - film music mostly. I also do graphic design and since I work at home most of the time these days, my Mac Pro is also my "general purpose" computer.

Or "how long until you get a ticket for improper disposal of eWaste?" ;)

ha.

if it's at the curb then yeah, i might get a ticket and it certainly won't be placed in the garbage truck..

but free/working stuff is generally left near stoops opposite the curb.. with a sign 'free' on there.. i personally haven't heard of someone getting fined for doing that (yet?).

in my (mac-centric) neighborhood, i think it will last about 3hrs. max... i'll do it this weekend unless the rain forecast holds true.. otherwise, the next sunny weekend we have.

I use my Mac Pro for multiple uses (HTPC Server, Hobbyist, Gaming, General Purpose) but I'm surprised gaming is so low. I used to do music production quite a bit, but I wouldn't consider that currently because it's been a long while since I've been doing that.

the original use for my macPro was for professional use.
now, it's just taking up space.. not plugged in so not a space heater.
i guess i'll choose 'other'.. space waster ;)

would you maybe prefer something considerably smaller in those scenarios?
I´d definitively take it!, never owned a Mac Pro , not even a power Mac...., and yet , have had all other Macs at some time

i've tried giving it away 4 times. nobody will take it.

Wrong crowd I guess. I just sold my 5,1 for $750 to a photographer and my 4,1 for $900 to a music guy.

I suspect that my time here in this subforum is waning. I do enjoy the company, but nothing is relevant now.

Music production, with lots of multimedia editing on the side.

Really appreciate the flexibility of my 2012 MP, which allows me to tailor and upgrade the machine for my specific needs. 5,1 is the cat's meow for professional use! :) I really hope we see a similar form factor return for the 7,1!
