Definitely saw this on the XS Max before going with the XS. Must be glued components underneath. Not very pleasing.

Same here! Bought an iPhone XS Max and recently noted that it made a popping sound when being pressed, especially when charging! Moreover, the haptic motor was acting weirdly with some metal popping noise sometime. Called Apple and a replacement is on the way! Probably production issues! Feels like a cheap phone tbh when you have this kind of issues.

hopefully the new one does not have them !

otherwise a great phone :)

I’ve had two make this sound. I’m exchanging the second XS Max today, not because of the noise but because it’s too big for me. So I’m going with the XS. The XS Max is just not manageable for me to use with one hand and navigate through Apple Music when I’m in the car.

Add me to the list of people who had a popping sound on my iPhone XS Max.

I had it in two places, when you pressed in the top left of the screen and when you picked the device up - both loud popping noises from the screen.

LOL, I thought it was either my glass back or glass screen protector, now I know it's from the phone... really strange

Same here. Honestly it does not bother mee too much, the pop just came out if i force the pressure in the back. I've tried several model, and each one present this kinda noise.

To me, it doesn't worth to waste time in a phone swap with the high risk that the new has the same noise...

Just noticed this as well.
Going to be interesting to see how this is handled at the store. I am just under 30 days and will refuse anything less than a new retail box replacement.

I am also wondering how the lottery will play out. Other than a slightly warm screen, I have a pretty good phone with no flaws......except creaking/popping.

I got a second phone and it still does that creaking noise ! I’d guess is either normal or pure bad luck ! Either way i’m kinda lazy to replace the phone again !

You can refuse all you want, they don’t have to give you a brand new iPhone sealed Being you’re past your 14 days. They can issue you a warranty replacement device that is not necessarily ‘new’ in the box, However, it will be like ‘new’, but you will take what Apple gives you. However, some stores might make an exception and give you a brand new phone, its variable.

you’re never going to push the back in like that in normal use. If it bothers you exchange it. But I really wouldn’t worry about it

that's the point.

In the every day use you're never going to push the back.

So you some have a flawless unit in terms of:
1) even display
2) solid (no mushy) buttons
3) no crackling speaker
4) no problem with wifi

.. does it worth and exchange with a replaced unit with potentially a new flaw and with the popping sound again?

Honestly: i've tried many unit, in apple store and even in shop. the most (about 90%) present the popping issue.

I think it due to the manufacturing. The back glass is fixed with the glue on the border, the middle is just placed on the body.

To have a better idea of the manufacturing watch this:

So, the popping we hear is just the sound of the glass that's flexing a bit.

So it begins....

So I couldnt get an appointment with at Genius bar to look at this until next week.
So as an experiment, I purchased another max.

Of course, no creaking, but the display is much much warmer. Unacceptable in my opinion. I wouldnt swap it out for my current device.
Now I am faced with playing the display (et al) lottery or keep a creaky phone.

And while logic would say I dont push on the display, the reality is that I do in fact push on the display for 3d touch.
If it took a firm amount of pressure I wouldnt even think about this.

I have been a pretty loyal apple consumer and have never had an issue (other than minor) with any purchases.
But....I have also never spent 1200 bucks on a phone.

just a question guys: when you talk about the pipping/creaky sound do you mean the area in the back cover or even the display? beacause if so, it wouldn't be acceptable.

The back area is not supposed to be pushed in, but the front, of course yes.

For me, its just left of the apple logo on the backside. If I push a little I hear a faint creak/pop. If I push firmly, definitely louder and more pronounced.
Only time I notice is when I press for a 3d touch action in that section and my thumb is on the backside.

Not a huge deal really.....but not good for a premium device.

At this point its part OCD, part nuisance, part crappy QC.

I can hear it especially in the red spot, sometime in the yellow.
My previuos XS MAx (white) has the exactly same noise.

Never heard when i use the force touch, probably it triggers even with a low pressure.

I see it depends even on the outside temperature.

Well I can tell you the new phone I just purchased does not exhibit this issue.
The screen however, is far too warm for my liking.

So I am at an impasse.

For god's sake, do not swap your phone with a warmer screen unit.

I think that the brand new unit has no/very minor creaky sound but it's just a matter of days to comes out.

In the next days i'll try the last test: i'll go to an apple store and try all the floot units.

PS1: even the X of my wife has the same problem
PS2: damn OCD, every year is the same story :(

As I was waiting to check out, I did try all floor units. Its about a 50/50 split.
Some do....so do not.
Some are much much worse as well.

Again - these are all variables that I am considering before making an exchange.

My sons X does not. My wifes 8 Plus does not.
