Good luck to you. I defend my M. Arch final study later next week, so I can relate to the deadline. I'm thinking about picking up Mass Effect 3 afterwards and just forgetting grad school ever existed.

I'd love to hear what you think of the new uncharted, and if the PSVita is worth $300.

Good luck to you too! I agree with forgetting grad school ever existed, I am going on a PS3 binge as soon as I hand in this monster!

Haven't had much time to play around with the PSVita yet, but so far I would say it is definitely worth the money!

Spent some birthday money.

Behold, my first real kitchen knife. A Shun Ken Onion 8" Chef's Knife.

Believe it or not, I only have rather crappy knives. A set of three knives with block and cutting board, made in China, that cost $20. Needless to say, I'm very excited!!! Did a lot of research first.
You paid $20 for the Shun Ken?

no, he said he has a $20 cheap knife set from china with 3 knives, a cutting board, and a block.... and that's why he is excited for the shun ken.

Oh see, reading comprehension FTW! If SHE had paid $20 for the shun ken I'd want in on that deal! I think those knives are hundreds of dollars.

sorry, didn't know she was a she!

but yeah, they retail for around $200 for that knife. A 4.5" onion is about $100

Wusthof makes some very nice knives as well. If you are looking for a nice block loaded with knives, this is a good starter...

So, how do you like it?

Ordered it online and haven't received it yet, but it felt great in the store.

Yup, paid $200 on Amazon.

Wusthof makes good German knives, certainly, but unless you're buying a gift, I'd avoid the economy line, go with a higher-quality line of knife, and buy one or two versus a block for the same price. Obviously that's what I did, but I did it for a reason!

That book I posted earlier, An Edge in the Kitchen, was very informative.

Anyway, I decided on Japanese knives because they're harder, sharper, and lighter, much more so than the Germans. The "Ken Onion" series by Shun caught my eye because of the ergonomics, which feels better in my hand, particularly with a pinch grip. The rocking motion is really smooth with it, too. And having been in the military, I knew of Ken Onion and his great knife designs.

Shun had the other things I was looking for like high hardness (61 on the Rockwell Scale), high carbon content, not a full bolster, more acute bevel (16° each side) to be even sharper, and great balance.

Can't wait to start using it! I definitely defer to a chef's knife more than anything.

Finally decided to purchase it.

Such a great game.

Also got some small kitchen stuff.

To be honest, like Perrumpo said, dont even bother with the Gourmet line. We bought a set of steak knives, The Gourmets, from Macys when they were having a sale. We were excited because we wanted to upgrade and start our collection. This was a spur of the moment purchase, as we werent aware of the sale. When we got home and opened them, you could tell they were of poor quality. In my opinion, if your looking for quality, buy only one knife at a time, and avoid blocks. That is unless you can shell out $900 for a stacked Shun kit, or comparable.

And to stay on topic: I bought some of these for my routers
