9.1 / 10.0 Texas Hold'em - $4.99

Best Texas Hold'em application hands down and it will probably stay that way. Very polished graphics and UI. The only slight con is currently no online play and the need for a wifi connection in multiplayer mode. Addicting!

This is just a preliminary review.

More in depth reviews to come when my iPhone finishes restoring...

Cool Political App - Obama - McCain quote game

Found an app that requires real thinking... Fit 2 Vote.... at first I thought it was a stupid idea for a game, but I'm a political junkie... so for 99¢ what the hell right?

Then I found out its fricking hard to beat this game. There's nothing prejudicial about it, but it does make you think and that's a rare thing for iPhone apps. They say they are going to keep updating it with the election. If they do, I will keep playing it.

I found the web site and read the funny genesis of the game, looks like a couple of independents, trying to make sense of Obama or McCain. Cool... Smart. Check it. Report what you think.

LOVE: AOL Radio App (free) Weatherbug App (Free)

Apps Not Working: Where - cant find me, errors out, horribly slow on wi-fi

I also love both AOL Radio App and Weatherbug. The best thing about weatherbug is that it has screenshots, so I can see how the weather looks when I'm in airports traveling to a place. I can just whip out my iPhone, and actually SEE what the weather looks like. Very good app, and very smart to put it free because I had never heard of that company before I found it in the app store. I would do the same thing if my company was not well known. Just make it public and free.

Over Here

Is anyone else having the same issue as I am with Over Here? What happens is when you get your location you can only move the red dot to the edge of the map it wont let you move the map at all to correct the poor location it did, the map isn't even drawn all the way what a fine piece of work. Don't try to get support their so called web site stinks. Save your money. Tried to re-install a few times as well...

I am so surprised that most of the location apps I have tried stink and this is one of the coolest features the iPhone has, especially the 3G.... Come on developers I would pay good money to have something that works. I do realize this is first generation iPhone apps and it should get better, but some of these developers are getting some good cash returns for their efforts, so give some support if your stuff stinks.

I was being as nice as I could here I am not happy with so many of the apps that Apple is letting get through..:confused:

Etch A Sketch

AWESOME.

There seems to be a teeny lag and it tough to get too precise...but its awesome.

Would like to see an APP developed that was a proper sketching program for artists... but as is this is really fun.

I'd give it a 7

iVote - cool social networking app

Just posted about this on another thread someone started, but spotted this afterwards. New here, so please forigve.

Anyhow, here is a pretty darned cool freebie in the app store.

App Name: iVote
Itunes Price: free
Rate app: 1-10: I give it a 10 because I haven't put the darned thing down since I found it.
Your Review: so they throw questions at you. .. political, entertainment, sports, etc. And you select from multiple choice answers. You can then see immediately what the results are across all users. Very slick! You leave comments and vote on other people's comments.

Darn.. they just put up another question. Favorite cartoon. Gotta vote!

App review podcasts

Just to mention, there are a few app review postcasts available in iTunes:

"iPhone app podcast" (lots of small video app reviews)

"Apple iPhone apps postcast" (more small video app reviews)

"The app show" (a 30 minutes an episode talkie)
These guys also interview developers.

App Name: MyDelicious
Itunes Price: 1.99
Rate app: 9

I bought Yummy and MyDelicious. MyDelicious is miles ahead of every delicious client out there (I also bought tastymarks, my god that was a disaster...). MyDelicious's developer actually gave some thought to how people will use it. All apps currently have a 30 min sync limit, this app doesnt. This app is actually the only app that will allow you to view the page inline rather than open in safari. Not to mention it has multiple tag search. Just everything I needed. Promised upcoming feature includes emailing bookmarks which is also something I could use.

As the author of Yummy, I would just like to point out that there is no 30 minute sync limit. It synchronises on launch and there is a refresh button on the main screen. Delicious itself sometimes imposes a limit, but this will affect any client.

It is also possible to search on one or more tags.

I thought the ability to add, edit and delete posts -- currently unique among iPhone clients as far as I'm aware -- was a more compelling feature than an inline web view, but clearly this is something that I will consider adding if it is a popular request.

Downloaded quite a few apps now,

My faves are Posimotion Pool, GTSWR (racing game) and break classic

I really enjoy pool games and the physics are sound are pretty good in this one. The only improvements or updates I think it needs is an aftershot line, ball rotation animation when in motion, and definitely an option to apply spin to the ball, which could be added pretty easily with an icon in a corner.
Its a great foundation, and with these improvement will be a classic.

GTS word racing has surprisingly good graphics and smooth animation for the iphone. Once you get used to the accelerometer the handling of the car is very good also, can't really think of any faults with it, excellent driving game.

Break classic is really addictive, great gameplay, great sound, great visuals. Its the block game where you have a paddle and a ball and have to prevent the ball going off the bottom of the screen and knock out the blocks above. Really simple game but very enjoyable, could do with a few more levels, but probably the game i play most, and its a free app : )

App Name: Memengo Wallet
Price: $.99 from the App Store.

Memengo Wallet is an application that allows you to store your information in a single, secure location. Some of the things it stores are credit card info, website logins, email accounts, and a plethora of other things in your "wallet". There is a default folder in your wallet when you log in that's actually a readable tutorial about anything and everything in the application. The tutorial looks a little cheesy but it's filled with a ton of great info. The interface is simple, basic, easy to navigate, and straightforward. This might turn a few people off who want all of the bells and whistles or an award winning design, because there isn't any of that here.

1219505206.jpg

Adding a card to your wallet is extremely easy. All you have to do is open up the folder you want to add the card in, and click the "+" symbol in the top right corner. That opens up your menu where you can select the type of card you want to make. You get a good list of choices to choose from and once you select the one you need, you just start filling in the information. Once it's filled in and saved, it's added to the folder to storage.

1219477023.jpg

Memengo has a couple features that are well worth mentioning. One is the ability to sync it over the air with your account on their website. Syncing/backing up with the online account is surprisingly quick. It only takes about five to ten seconds and it's all synced up. It probably depends also on the amount of data being transferred, but when I first added all of my information and synced it, it still only took about five to ten seconds. It is free to sign up an takes just a few minutes to create an online account with them and it gives you another place where you can access your information. You can also edit your wallets and cards on the website and you will still need to enter your encryption key just like on your phone. It even gives you the ability to print off your wallets so you can have a hard copy.

1219476999.jpg

I'm sure you are curious about how secure your information is. You can choose to encrypt your data so if you transfer the data later, it's unreadable even by Memengo. When you encrypt your data, you must select a password. Once selected, make sure you remember it as there is no way to retrieve it if you forget or lose it. Each time you start up Memengo and choose your wallet, it will prompt you to enter in your encryption key. Once entered, you are free to go about your business. If you exit the application or your iPhone goes into standby, you must re-enter your encryption key. There is more security information on Memengo's site.

1219476971.jpg

I want to take a second to comment about the staff at Memengo. When I first downloaded the app and tried it out, I loved it. So, I jumped online to provide some feedback and let them know that I enjoy their application and a question I had. Hours after I sent the feedback via email, I received an email back from them thanking me for the feedback, answered my question, and were very professional in their manner. I was quite happy as you typically don't see that happen very often, let alone hours after. I know that if I have any questions, I can count on them to give me an answer.

Overall this is an absolutely fantastic app for what it does. The only downsides I can really see for some people is the simplistic look of the interface and that fact that you can not get back your encryption key if it's forgotten. It doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles nor the prettiest looking interface, but it does what it says and it does it very well.

Final Rating

* Ease of Use: 4/5 - It's a very straight forward application that has a tutorial that covers the entire application. Just make sure you don't forget your encryption key.
* Interface: 4/5 - This application is a plain jane looking piece of software. It's not cluttered by fancy graphics and special effects to distract you from the real purpose of the app. While it's what's best for the app, some may not like the "boring" look of it.
* Price: 5/5 - With the features that are packed in here and the ability to create a free online account your can sync/back up your information to, $.99 is a steal for how convenient having all of your stuff, encrypted even, at the touch of a button.

Recommended? Yes.

Spore Review

I recently purchase the much anticipated SPORE for my iPod Touch. Now, other than Crash Bandicoot, and a few of the guitar and music apps, I haven't really been playing many games for the Touch, yet.

At the purchase price of $9.99 I would have to say this is a pretty fun little game. Keeping in mind that this is on a mobile device it's pretty kick butt! The graphics are superb, the best I have seen on the Touch. The game play is great... I mean this isn't some long epic that you'll want to play for the next six months but, it is a fun app for $10 bucks.

SPORE definitely has me waiting, anticipating more releases from EA! This is the first game I have played for the iPod Touch that really feels like a game developer put some serious effort behind it. Good job Will Wright!

Rating: SPORE 8.5

Imangi: Deceptively Simple Fun

From what I can tell, this game got overlooked to some degree. It was funny too because our Portable Editor kept trying to shove the review over to someone else.

But once he got into it, his tuned dramatically changed. Here's the full review:

(If you enjoyed PopCap's Bookworm, this is probably a no brainer)

I really like this app because it is simple and easy to use, and always fun when you have nothing else to do. Love the 12 bar blues guitar.

This is an awesome app. Can't say i'm very good at it but it is really good. Handy that you can download all the extra songs even though you have to download them on the phone (correct me if i'm wrong).

A lot of people say this app is too hard to control (which i also thought originally) but after a bit of practise it really is a great app. I've had it since i got my iPhone (July 12) and have only just got around to using it frequently and learning it properly.

A great remake of a great game. On a recent search i couldnt find it so i think it may have been deleted from the app store. Sometimes the controls are a bit sensitive but overall it is really good.

I found some answers....

I thought ATT was planning thier own yellow pages app, wasn't it in the keynote? This one seems to be a knockoff.

I looked it up. The company that makes the Yellow Pages app is a sister company with Yellow Pages. The company is called Avantar (here's their website)So I think their app is legit.

They also make Showtimes which I think is awesome. It's way better than Now Playing and slightly better than Movies. (Read my post here for more info.)
