They are probably taken with the inbuilt camera app and are compressed jpegs, straight from camera. When the 8 plus, I can only talk about that, as it's what I have, is used with a third party camera app and the images are saved as RAW files, it's very good for a sensor that's less than a third of an inch square.

I think a lot of it comes down to peoples techniques. Some people are as wobbly as, when they hit that shutter button on the screen so hard. The third party app I use, I have set up to take an image when I remove my finger from the screen after locking focus and exposure.

You could always go one further and work from a tripod, using your headphones and triggering the shutter with the volume up button for the absolute best stability possible. Quite a few famous mobile phone photographers do this all the time.

You’re probably right.

Too true, in all the tests I have done with Portrait Mode, the masking has been applied in quite nasty ways, removing all the fine hair details every time. At least Apple are consistent! ;)

The rest of these are taken using the wide-angle lens.

Great pictures! I'm assuming these were edited?

I really enjoy the pictures in this thread. I might have skipped up voting some posts but I appreciate everyone's contributions. I love the kitties! I love to take cat pictures because they usually are pretty good about holding still and not giving attitude. My dog never ever holds still unless she's completely unconscious and even then she twitches. Kids are hopeless. Even if they hold still they make horrible faces.

Yes, as they were saved as RAW files, using a third party camera app, they need editing. They basically got tweaks to saturation, vibrancy and some sharpening.

Coincidentally, most folks are not actually aware that when you save a file as a jpeg using the inbuilt camera app, it has the same tweaks applied to it automatically! That is, saturation and vibrancy boosts, automatic light balancing and sharpening are applied by the sensor and its electronics for every image it takes.

you can never have enough pics of dogs. especially mine ;)
And you would be right, that's adorable! But, I notice that all of the fine hair detail to its ears has been removed by the Portrait Mode being applied. It doesn't do very well in the regard, eventually they will get the masking right, I hope!

Can I ask which 3rd party app you use?
PureShot, it's only a couple of buck$ and allows you full control of the inbuilt camera, as if you are using a DSLR, but it also has an automatic mode too. It allows you to save your images as RAW files, which need editing, to bring out their best. I use the spot metering on it and place that wherever I want it to be on the image, same with my focus point. I have it set up to lock these, and to take the image when I lift my finger from the screen, rather than when you touch the screen, as in the action of touching the screen you usually move the camera.

I got my 8 two days ago and I’m really impressed of the photos. I had an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 7 for one week as I had to return it because it was faulty and there was no exchange possible at that time and I didn’t want to wait for another week.
So I can say: the photos are more like the ones from the 6 but more contrast and better colors. So no noise like on the iPhone 7. I like the photos! The pictures just look great.
