What a fun thread!

I miss this one:
imacg4.png
The speakers were fantastic and the lampshade hinge was terrific. It was a heavy little thing too. I liked the white color and am wondering with so many PC makers using white for their late 2017 / 2018 designs if Apple might reconsider white as a computer color. Though I'd also wouldn't mind black.

Current iMac is this one...

3 iPod Shuffles, a Nano
iPhones 4s, 5, 6s, 7+
iPad 2, iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro 2nd gen

And dingle dongles, cables and those kinds of things.

2003 - iPod 16GB ‘touch play/pause button’ version

I’ll always remember how high end the box felt - and how small the iPod was!

Bought as it was the first version that worked with iTunes on Windows - but it still had a dual FireWire (for charging) and usb 2 (data transfer on Windows).

I also remember how cool iTunes felt to use compared to any software on Windows. The brushed metal that iTunes sported at that point felt stylish and futuristic!

Sadly it was the version that had a row of touch buttons for back/play/pause/forward and a smaller touch click wheel.

I just missed out on the 2004 version which had the clock wheel only and was the definitive form of the iPod imho.

Eventually died on me in 2007 when I dropped it.

2005
iMac 17 inch G5 - i can’t remember the specs! Shipped with Tiger.

My first Mac. And it felt curiously underpowered with the fans starting up at seemingly the slightest thing.

Tiger felt impossibly stylish compared to Windows XP, although I started to get tired of the brushed metal look in the finder and safari pretty quickly.

Upgraded it to double the RAM and eventually put Leopard on it (~£70!) which I was really impressed by. Less brushed metal for a start!

Eventually it died on me in 2010, lasting 5 years. I suspect that the G5 finally melted away the interior!

2007
iPod Nano 8GB (‘squashed square version’ in black

One of my least favourite iPods, it just never felt right. I enjoyed using it though, but always wished that I had bought the Nano. Great battery life.

I guess Apple felt the same too as it reverted to the rectangle version a year later.

I used to use this lots with my faithful Nokia High end soapbar phone until finally...

2009
iPhone 3GS 16GB

The device that changed my life!

The App Store really was astonishing. As was having a proper web browser on your phone. I remember the early Facebook app being very very basic though and very much an add on to the main web product. How things change.

It was not without its faults:

Terrible battery that collapsed before the end of the day when I went out. Terrible camera which meant that I carried my digital camera everywhere with me until I got my 4S.

But, I’ll always remember how amazing it felt to put my gmail address in and hand my mail, calendar and contacts appear on my phone. Wow!

Super tough too and survived quite a few falls with just the back scratching.

I never quite loved this model as it felt so plasticky. But I was never in any doubt that my next phone would be an iPhone...

2010 - ‘late 2009’ iMac 21.5 inch ‘better’ model with 4GB RAM and 1TB drive

My favourite Mac. It just went on and on and on until I recycled it a few months ago.

Upgraded the RAM to 8GB. Yes, you could replace the RAM easily on this model!

Worked flawlessly in all the time I had it and supported everything from Snow Leopard to High Sierra.

This was the model where a relatively big enclosure meant that components could run without being overheated or stressed and this machine just worked year after year. Remember when Apple made computers like this?

Terrible keyboard and mouse. I spent loads on replacing these, settling on an Apple wireless keyboard and a Logitech mouse. Apple seem never to have quite got the hand of designing good durable and usable mice.

iPhone 4S 16GB early 2012

I had this until fall 2014. Loved using it. It was the first iPhone that felt premium. I managed never to smash the glass either despite using it without a case for much of the time!

This was the time when iOS 5 and 6 started to feel tired and I’ll always remember what a breath of fresh air ios 7 felt.

The first iPhone where I started to leave my digital camera behind. And the first iPhone where it kept its charge all day.

Not without faults - the shoulder power button failed about 18 months into its life so I had to use accessibility settings to turn off the phone.

iPhone 5s 32GB
Loved this phone. Bought it at the same time as the 6 came out as I had waited and waited to see what Apple would do with the 6 and decided that I didn’t want a big phone after seeing it.

This was pretty much my perfect iPhone - until I dropped it and completely smashed it up.

A great camera (for the time) very pocketable and a beautiful design.

2016 iPhone 7 128GB
My current phone. I succumbed to a larger phone after seeing the huge levels of upgrades compared to the 5s.

I’ve never really loved it, but it’s a great phone. Well when it had iOS 10 on it...

I’ve never needed the storage so I regret that!

I’ll likely keep this one until it dies.

2017 Apple Watch Series 1 38mm

I really like this though it’s not felt as essential to me as I thought it would.

I bought it as a nice looking fitness tracker - which it is.

Notifications are useful as is Apple Pay.

I could probably not wear this for a week and not miss it too much. Though I do enjoy using It. Interested to know what this year will bring though.

2017 MBP 13 non touch bar entry model

Like many others, I’ve mixed feelings about this model.

It looks great. Stunning screen. Runs quiet most of the time. Fast enough for light productivity. Keeps on going and going no matter how many safari tabs I open.

Battery life is worse than I thought it would be. It’s only about 4 hours or so. I expected more.

Bought because I couldn’t quite justify buying the underpowered MB.

Not had keyboard issues but am v glad of the repair program.

Has a strange click that’s emitted from near the loudspeakers sometimes after playing a sound which is annoying but I’ve got used to it and I suspect is a manufacturing fault (not a design one) but one that it’s almost impossible to get Apple to admit to

I’ll keep this until it dies when hopefully I’ll get an ARM MB and one without keyboard and build issues.

It’s a machine that I thought I’d love but this - and iOS 11 - caused me to really start to lose faith in Apple after being a very happy customer since 2003. A shame to end on a slightly sour note after really enjoying what Apple has done over the last 15 years and how I’ve enjoyed using their hardware and software. Let’s hope that 2016-18 is a blip...

Thanks for the thread OP and others - I’ve really enjoyed it.
