Hi.
This is a good thread. Gives folks with limited budgets a way to show pics without competing with professional photographers. Some of this stuff is awesome, by the way. I am really impressed by the work done by folks posting here.

Took this on my vacation last September. My Canon film camera locked up and my digital saved the trip.

Hi, Sean. Thanks for the compliment on the photo. It was taken on the North Cascades Highway (SR 20) in Washington State. It parallels the Canadian boarder through some beautiful country. The shot is from September of '08. I have others that I will be posting to this thread.

Good luck in school.

Dale

Out of focus

How are you guys able to get such limited depth of field on a point and shoot? Or is it purposefully brought out of focus in post processing?

I believe that most point and shoots get depth pf field equivalent of about f22 on an slr. How then can you have most of flower out of focus?

The closer you are to a focused area the less dof you will have. Also, with the slug picture, the G5 has an ever so slightly larger image sensor compared to other point and shoot cameras which also helps narrow the depth of field and a lens that opens all the way to f/2.0. All of these things help.

Just yesterday I was taking pictures of my watch and I had to stop down all the way f/11 just to get the whole watch face in focus. But that was on a Canon Rebel XT at minimum focus distance with a 24-70 2.8L lens so yeah.

Another from my North Cascades Highway trip. Near Ross Lake, but not. Used the Stamp Tool in PhotoShop to remove an electrical wire.

Tomorrow we go to the smokejumper base!

Hi, folks.

These are from the North Cascades Smokejumper Base located in Winthrop, Washington State. It was the first jumper base and was established in 1939. September was a quiet time to visit. Twenty smokejumpers are stationed here are responsible for all of the remote firefighting needs in the North Cascades.

The plane is a CASA 212. You can tell how old everything is from the pre-WWII style barracks. Everything is very neat and well kept.
