The plate was scoured clean when I surrendered it - superlative soup. And yes, you are right, I'd have licked it if that was considered acceptable, but the bread worked perfectly well instead.
This particular French restaurant - and another excellent establishment I frequent, - have only one soup on offer each day. It changes frequently, often weekly. Almost always, it is vegetarian. And it is invariably delicious.
I have learned to be wary of French or Italian restaurants that have very large menus. Small menus, with a choice of a very few main courses - if the cooking is good and the chef knows what they are about - can offer a superlative dining experience.
Actually, today's soup was so good that I completely forgot that I had a glass of Chemin Blanc to hand, and only remembered to attend to my glass of wine when the soup plate was removed.

The thought has crossed my mind that some of these businesses could do a lot worse than hire you to manage their PR, as you have quite a flair for portraying food in an extremely seductive and mouth-watering way.

I would love to visit Katz's some day; a treat for the future.
Nevertheless, while you say the food 'speaks for itself' you portray it very attractively, and I must say that the divine picture of your noodle dish had me openly salivating.

If and when I ever do get to visit new York (a place I have never yet been), Katz's is on my itinerary.

sorry, what drinks are you referring to?
katz's is definitely iconic. the other famous deli is carnegie. locals often debate as to which one is better. i am partial to kata's, but they are both very good.
as far as asian restaurants go, i have never really made them a destination in NYC as Los Angeles has tons to offer. the few exceptions are Masa and Yasuda for sushi and Ivan Ramen. Masa is in a class of its own, Yasuda is a top ten sushi bar and arguably may have better rice than Masa. Ivan Ramen was good, but somewhat of a let down IMHO. Then again, I only had a chance to go at lunch time and the full menu was not available.
