dont come to australia then. you will be paying $100AUS a month for 25gb of data capped back to 64k when you go over it.

Hasn't the Australian government banned >1mW lasers? I know that was kind of random, but I used to build lasers as a hobby and had heard that the law was passed but it wasn't being enforced.

yes that sounds about right, i remember the ban but not the rating. if you are caught shining lasers at anything (planes, people, cars etc) your in trouble.

Well speak in reference to Japanese dude, here, I barely get anything above 50 Mb/s and the price of one of those lines for you home usage is an arm and your first born whether its Verizon and their crappy FiOS service or AT&T's godly U-Verse.

There are 100 Mb/s lines out there, but they are even worse in price, something like an eye, your ability to hear and your house as a down payment.

well your lucky, because i dont get anything above ADSL2+, which is actually not ADSL2+ because its only 20mbps (MAX, i get 17mbps because of latency, distortion etc). i would kill for 50mbps. i have a 1mbps upload speed, its pathetic. we dont get cable, you have to be in the city for that.

by the time i can get your type of speeds you will have been upgraded to something 10x faster.. thats just how it works here.

p.s. sorry for double post i forgot ;(

Im not a fan of ASDL2+.... you see, anything DSL related still has to work thru the old fashion copper, and I hate to say it, the old copper wire has hit it's limit, and should really be phased out. Long story short, ADSL2+ isn't the answer as it reaches a bandwidth limit.

I am more a cable or fiber optic connection, but for now I'll stick to the first until the latter becomes cheaper.

However after all that mini-rant, I can see what you say about cable. Also, I wouldn't be so doubtful of the Australian government. Hey at least they are doing something, not like here in the US where instead of progress, stupid companies like Comcast and Time Warner are starting to cap people...

Cox Cable FTW!!!

yup well our copper lines are Grade One pathetic :) i cant wait until we upgrade to fibre, at least then we can have somewhat faster speeds..

give me fibre please! i want to go live at taiwan.

HA well at least you had no caps, we have always had caps - i remember being capped after downloading 200mb on dialup. the max download limit i have seen for consumers is 200gb per month - but 80% of the population cannot get the company because of the countries major ISP blocking other ISPs in the exchange.. typical. 60gb seems to be about the limit if you pay $150AUS per month. hopeless

Cox Cable FTW!!!
what is this cox cable? coaxial cable or something else?

My future cable and internet company. $65 for TV (HD mainly) With a 12 Mb/s downlink stream and the best part, no ***** caps.

Well, its going to be a drag going from 50 Mb/s to 12 Mb/s, but I ain't paying up $80 or more for that. However, not to dispair, Cox is right now rolling out DOCSIS 3.0, which will fortunately increase our bandwidth to a nice 30 or 40 Mb/s in the next 6-9 months.

Cox currently uses DOCSIS 1.1 I believe. Theoretically DOCSIS 3.0 has a max theoretical of 400 Mb/s. Check that last statement as I am not sure 100%.

Edit: Yup I was wrong, actually DOCSIS 3.0 is divided into 2 methods of transfer, 4 channel and 8 channel.

4 channel connection has a maximum of ~170 Mb/s down and ~123.00 Mb/s up. 8 channel has ~371 Mb/s and same up stream.

BTW, DOCSIS just means the type interface of connection between the costumer and cable company.

Now thats harsh... Back in my home country, the lowest is 768 Kb/s... Man, I hope that the plan your govern't has to implement 100 Mb/s lines with no caps comes to reality *very* soon. I already feel like slapping your Prime Minister and his Parliament.

oh there will be caps, there is no doubt about that. dw i wanna slap him too :p

In my office at work... I get about 8MS... LOL... I love the government in Britain... or at least my hospitals IT department :D

At home though.... even though I get 40MB/s I get about 45MS ping... SLOW!! Or at least with what i'm used to!!

Bandwidth wise, I don't mind many people here, I have either way above or match some people in bandwidth (50 Mb/s down & 40 Mb/s up), but my ping is very inconsistent and sometimes can go up to 200 ms although the lowest has been like 35 ms.

I would very much like a ping as low as 5 ms and would trade 10 Mb/s up & down for that.
