IMHO, Speedtest.net is not an accurate prediction of your bandwidth over time.

For example, I just DL'ed Mac OS 9.2.1 update which is 82MB. It took 76 seconds. This translates to a 1.08MBps or 8.63Mbps rate.

My ADSL line is rated at about 45Mbps. As usual with ADSL, the actual speed is much less than advertised.

In this case, Speedtest.net indicates a 5,499kbps which is not near the 8,631kbps rate that I am actually getting.

YMMV.

That is why I recommend DL'ing the Mac OS 9.2.1 update or some other large file (at least 60MB in size) and time it. That will give you a more accurate reading of your actual speed at that time.

:apple:

I downloaded an Ubuntu ISO and it was going at about 1.5 MB/s witch just about agrees with speedtests 11 Mb/s

yes i agree. i have found that downlaoding from apples web site is THE ONLY website that i can get my full download speed. i can hit about 850kbytesps-900kbytesps where most other sites i just get 150-300. this is probably because apple has the internet and server capacity to give me that connection.

speedtest probably also get a massive hit count whenever you run a test so there would be extra latency and whatnot in that.

I've also seen it work in reverse where a site such as Speedtest.net says you get a 10Mbps DL speed when in reality you get something like 100kbps which is not even close.

That is why I rarely use such sites because I do not trust their results compared to real world file transfers.

Good point about Apple's serves as well. They are fast.

Cheapest ISP for cable I could find :T

The second one is from campus using their lab computers :)

Upload Speed: 1744 kbps (218 KB/sec transfer rate)

Download Speed: 4282 kbps
Upload Speed: 298 kbps

I'm firing my ISP. Compared to some of the other speeds posted my isp is crap.
