I hope this is fun, not obnoxious. As the title says, list your gear. I think it'd also be interesting to have some comments as to the rationale for the item)

Knowing that I'd want to be ready to take great pics of my baby (just born), I upgraded from my 5.5-year old Olympus 2020Z to:

Canon XTi (thought about D50, but despite ergonomics got more excited about Canon lenses and the XTi's spiffiness)

Lenses:
50mm f/1.8 (seemed like a no-brainer on my budget, especially as I love flashless photography)
Tokina 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 (sounded like a better option than the kit lens in the: cheap, solid, sharp criteria I was looking for. Was thinking of getting Sigma's 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 Macro, but in the end felt that exceeded the budget)

I photograph a lot of interiors/exteriors, landscapes, landmarks, cityscapes, etc. for clients. I *sometimes* do weddings, really don't like to if I don't have to, but it helps pay the bills!

Profoto 600+600 Light Kit - awesome, awesome kit. I've used Elinchrome, Speedotron, White Lightning, and Photogenic lights but Profoto is my favorite brand of lighting equipment. Granted, this isn't as great as the Acute with independent flash heads but these are just awesome for field work and studio work.
(1x) Profoto Octo Diffusion Panel

Sekonic 358 Dual Light Meter - really great meter, but thinking of upgrading to the 558 meter with it's ability to connect to a computer and download data that matches your film and/or digital camera for spot on exposure!
(2x) PocketWizard Plus II Transceivers - gets rid of all those wires that I constantly trip over

Printers and Assorted Other Equipment
Epson R2400 Stylus Printer - awesome printer for photos up to 13x19 (really does 13x44 roll paper prints if you really want to). Really awesome for doing Black and White prints with.
Epson 4000 Stylus Pro Printer - great for prints that are 17x22 or larger! I do a lot of my pano prints with this printer. Also this printer is NOT good at Black and White prints!
Microtek ScanMaker i900 Film/Flat Bed Scanner - great over all scanner. Scans 35mm, 4x5, 120, 6cm, and a glass plate for irregular sized film not to mention it also has a scan bed for reflective scanning!
Old Wacom Graphire Tablet

I think that's everything. All of this gets used on a daily basis too! It's amazing I haven't gotten into the medium format area like the Mamiyas and what not. I've rarely ever had to use a medium format camera for any of the work I do. I find that interesting now as I type this out and think about it!

It means I'd love to get one. I rent one from time to time to do certain jobs and I just love the feel of it, not to mention the features! The D200 is a nice go between since it has some of the features of the D2x but it just isn't it. I've been saving up for a while but I still have a ways to go since I'm still paying off the Epson 4000.

And I love large format and I agree that if I ever stopped I would miss it!

I also have a few non-Nikkor lenses, including the intriguing 105mm Lester Dine/Kiron (macro) and the oldie-but-goodie Tokina 90mm f/2.5 (macro).

Also supplementing the lenses are the 1.4x, 1.7x and 2.0x teleconverters, used primarily on the 300mm lenses and the 200mm f/2 (Bertha). For lighting I have a couple of SB800 speedlights and also the cute little SB400 speedlight. When I do tabletop photography I use a Photek Light Tent, which works out quite nicely. It can also be used outdoors when shooting flowers, as it provides nice soft, even lighting.

I use Gitzo tripods and monopod, with the full Wimberley II gimbal head and also the excellent RRS BH-55 ballhead. The monopod has a Wimberley C-10 clamp on it for quick release. The camera bodies are fitted with RRS "L" brackets (D40 just has a basic camera plate) and the longer lenses have Wimberley plates affixed to their feet. This makes it easy to use either the gimbal head or the ballhead, depending upon a specific situation, or the monopod. For macro work I have a miniature Berlebach wooden tripod with the RRS BH-40 mounted on it. I really prefer shooting handheld but in doing macro a tripod really does make a difference.

I have a couple of Pelican cases for storing lenses in at home, and a variety of Domke bags, as well as the excellent Think Tank Airport Security bag (wheeled) and a smaller Lowepro (wheeled). Those wheeled cases can be real back-savers!

For post-processing: the Lexar Pro firewire 400 CF card reader and a Lexar SD card reader, plugged into my Mac Pro (4 core, 8 GB RAM, 4 500-GB HDs). I am planning to get the new 800 FW Lexar card reader when it becomes available. I use Photo Mechanic for preliminary sorting-out of my images, and then Aperture for 99.9% of my post-processing, but occasionally still will go into CS2 to do something Aperture doesn't or to try something experimental. I haven't yet gotten around to upgrading to CS3 yet but will be doing so eventually. I bought and installed Nikon Capture NX but have yet to actually try it out! I have the Wacom Intuos tablet but have to admit that I tend to still reach for the mouse when working with images.... When on the road I use the 15" MBP (Core Duo) and a LaCie "Rugged" external drive for images. I am a firm believer in lots of memory cards so have a couple of 8 GB CF cards that I got at the time I bought the D2Xs (back in March) and quite a few 4 GB CF cards, plus various smaller sizes that I've accumulated through the years since the days I was using first Coolpixes and later my D70. I also have a few SD cards but not as many, as I don't use those cameras as frequently or during extended shooting sessions.


Prior to getting into digital with my first Coolpix lo these many moons ago I had used the Nikon N90 and N90s, which I loved dearly, and also had done some shooting in medium format and large format. I miss those days!

Do you have a "most used / favorite" lens, if so why?

Well, much depends upon the situation. For many occasions I grab "the Beast" (28-70mm f/2.8); for traveling the first lens in the bag is the 18-200mm VR; for shooting birdies, the 300mm f/2.8 VR; for shooting flowers, if I want to plop down in the midst of the flower bed and get really upclose and personal with my subjects, the 60mm is the macro of choice. For keeping a safer distance between me and any flying critters, the 105mm VR or the 200mm f/4; for shooting dimly lit rooms and needing a fairly wide angle, the 28mm f/1.4; for shooting with a fairly quick lens unobtrusively, the 35mm f/2.... I pull out "Bertha" (200mm f/2) or the 85mm f/1.4 ("the Cream Machine" when I want to have fantastic bokeh behind my subjects.... The 70-200mm VR gets a lot of use, too.

I don't have just one favorite -- I love 'em all! LOL!

Interesting to read that old thread! I am not a professional photographer but over the years I seem to have accumulated a bunch of gear anyway, especially over the past year!

Are you just collecting them, or do you actually buy them with the intention of getting your moneys worth? I just don't get it, but since it's not my money, I guess I don't have to.

Ever consider selling the ones you don't use?


My stuff:

Nikon D50, although I really really really want a Fuji S5 Pro, just because more megapixels doesn't really interest me as much as what this camera can do.

Tokina 12-24 mm f/4 (wide angle)
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 (workhorse, everyday lens)
Nikon 50 mm f/1.8 (used the least often)
Nikon 105 mm f/2.8 VR macro

I essentially have the lens lineup I want, believe it or not. I could add more, but I'm happy with what I have.

The only lenses I want:

Either the Nikon 70-200 mm f/2.8 VR, or the Sigma 120-300 mm f/4 (one of the sharpest lenses around). Also, I'd like some sort of 35 mm or 28 mm f/1.8 or f/2 type lens. The 35 mm is definitely do-able and within the budget.

OTHER STUFF:

- memory cards
- UV and circ polariser filters
- Crumpler Sinking Barge backpack. Awesome.
- Lowepro bag.
- Manfrotto monopod
- Other stuff that I can't remember.....
