Leica D-Lux3

Simple kit, eh?

The nice thing is that I always have it with me, and in good light, I have gotten some beautiful pix.

Considering a Lumix DMC L1 and wondering if anyone has any comments on it?

I nearly bought the Leica D-Lux 3 while in Manhatten last week – how do you like it?

I ended up going for the Leica C-Lux 2, as I wanted something that would fit in my pocket so I could always have it with me... guess I have smaller pockets than you! I also need to learn a bit more before I can appreciate the manual features on the D-lux 3.

So, my cameras are:
Leica C-Lux 2 (only had it a week but loving it so far)

I'm all for people spending their money on what they want to spend it on, but I can't seem to fathom how people can spend so much money on so much gear and complain about being a 'poor student.'

I'm a student myself right now, and I seriously can't see myself dropping that much coin on a photo set-up just for kicks.

Yes, definitely an odd definition of "poor student."

Let's see if I can do this off the top of my head....

Body - Pentax *ist DL

Lenses (all Pentax unless noted... the SMC-K lenses are 1970's vintage full manual, but I wouldn't part with them) -

14mm f/2.8 DA
18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DA (kit lens)
28mm f/3.5 SMC-K
31mm f/1.8 Limited FA
35mm f/2 SMC-K
50mm f/1.4 SMC-K
77mm f/1.8 Limited FA (arriving today or tomorrow)
85mm f/1.8 SMC-K
85mm Soft Focus SMC-K
100mm f/4 Macro SMC-K
135mm f/2.5 K (Takumar)
200mm f/4 SMC-K
300mm f/4 SMC-K

I also have a Samigon 2x Teleconvertor that can be used with any of the manual lenses... for bags, I have a 5 Million (Purple), 6 Million (Brown) and 7 Million (Red) from Crumpler, depending on how much I want to carry around with me.

Only have the kit zoom at the moment, but I'm planning on picking up the upcoming DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 and the DA* 60-250mm f/4 when they are released...

How do you like using the 24-70mm without the tripod?

I have no problem with it, even in some low light situations. :) it's the best lens i've ever used... Using the 70-200mm without a tripod can be a pain, though.

An even poorer recent graduate's gear

Wow...some people on here have a lot of stuff.

Here's what I've got now:

Nikon D50 + 28-80 kit lens

Nikon 6006 + 35-70 f/3.3-4.5

Nikon SB-22 Flash (which is on loan to my dad :)

Hoping to add a zoom of some sort though with current finances it'll probably be a used one.

Forgot to mention my P&S (he felt left out): Sony DSC-P10, my old faithful for like 3 years. Took like 8000 pics on this guy.

The two-ring 80-200 f/2.8 is an awesome lens that's no longer produced and goes for pretty cheap (relatively speaking) in excellent condition.

Sweet thanks...I'll look into that. Any advice on macro lens + flash? :D I may be getting ahead of myself but I was looking through my Hawaii + Home pictures and I love the ones of flowers and frogs etc. the most.

BTW I have to say that the colors on my kit lens are amazing, the same picture taken with my 35-70 doesn't look nearly as vibrant or 'pop' as much.

Sidenote: Compuwar - that lens costs more used than both of my cameras! I guess I'll have to wait till I get a job to get a zoom. :-/

KEH has one for $751 in EX condition, I'd expect you could do better at Nikonians or eBay. The "relatively speaking" really does mean that though- that's a pro-caliber lens that's a constant f/2.8.

The Tamron 90mm is one of the best macro lenses, but my guess is it's around the same price as the 80-200. A lot depends on your personal level of comfort with 3rd party lenses and what level of quality you're looking for. Phoenix makes a 100mm Macro for ~$135- no idea how good it is though.

This link may help you for Macro stuff:

Thanks for that link...I think I may get one of those BR-2As and try it out. It won't be too much of a burn if it doesn't work as desired (I found it for $23 on ebay) and it seems like a good way to get started.

I was also looking around and in terms of zooms to get started since I'm just dabbling right now, I don't know if I'll invest so much into pro-quality glass though the lens you mentioned seems awesome. I was looking at the Nikon 70-300 G which apparently can be had for ~$150 so maybe I'll pick that up and try it out.

I am still in college and very broke. Most of this stuff is paid for with college loans. It paid off since I was able to get a freelance job with a local paper that pays me well enough and allows me to take out their equipment for their jobs and my jobs.

Can't wait for the next Stokely-Seaberg MacPro and eight core MacBook Pros.
