Are you using a headphone amp? These are studio monitors, so if you're trying to use with your ipod, you prolly need one to drive them.

Well I used to plug them in my external sound interface, but it wasn't a really good one so the sound wasn't too good out of that. And I sold that one a little while ago, looking forward to upgrade. But right now I just have my macbook and my iPod and I don't usually use headphones in my macbook other than when I'm on the bus and don't have my iPod.

I guess you're right about the headphone amp, I just tried listening to the same song on a stereo system then through my macbook (apple lossless, so it was the same quality) and it did sound a bit more trapped in the macbook. But that's how I feel about those headphones, they sound very flat and that's great when I'm making music, but they always lack in the highs. So I have this weird dilemma, my bookshelf speakers have a major lack in bass but have one of the most detailed high end I've ever heard, I guess I'm used to hearing music that way.

They're not bad headphone to any extent, actually at 50$, I think it's a pretty good deal. Mind you I think they are much more designed as headphones you would wear to sing with while recording. The k99 probably sound much better but couldn't be used for that. That's why I bought them too. But I also use them with my iPod or to get a second opinion from my speakers. Oh and they're indestructible too :p

dear sweet jesus, why would you spend 600 bucks on those.. you can buy sooooo much better for that amount of money.

You can also buy a computer equivalent to a Macintosh computer (even making it a Hackintosh), but we're all using one.

My current, day-to-day earphone
UE 18 Pro; they are worth every cent. Fit is perfect, isolation is excellent, and sound quality on another level!

My backup
UE TripleFi 10 Pro; pretty good as well, but I don't really use the much; I also swapped the cable out to add one with a mic.

in this case, its like buying a compaq for the price of a macbook pro... there's high quality/high price, a la apple computers, then there's low quality/high price.

Post Your Headphones

I am going to get some good headphones for Christmas. Which ones do you have and which ones do you recommend? I was looking at Dre's but I've heard mixed opinions on those. Help me out here. Thanks

I've had my Sennheiser HD555's for years. They sound absolutely fantastic. Normally they live plugged into my Onkyo receiver which either receives audio directly from my MBP through optical audio or over the air through an app called Airfoil (via a pc that is always plugged into it with coax). I also have a pair of Klipsch Image S4 in-ear ear buds that I use for on the go/traveling which also sound excellent. I can highly recommend both of those.

If you end up going with the HD555's I really recommend doing the mod shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvQ8PzBrHXE. It's very easy, I just did it myself recently. Took me about 15 minutes and I was being very careful not to put any sort of strain on the fragile speaker wires at the end. Vastly improves the openness of the sound.

I have a pair of Sennheisers, but I'm not sure what model. It doesn't say on them anywhere, and I got them as a gift.

Ahh envy! I was lucky to grab a pair of Triple.fi's when Amazon dropped them in the Gold Box last Christmas for $99.00. They are absolutely brilliant...I can only imagine how amazing the 18's must sound. There's actually a company that will take your IEM's and ear moulds that you get made by an audiologist and make your earphones into customs for 80 bucks. I've seriously been considering it...

Here they are. (Saw them in another thread, couldn't remember the name, had to search my history. :))

I currently use some Skull Candy's I got for a good price since I left my usual (and inexpensively nice) ones at my parents home. I kind of hate these b/c after awhile they make my head hurt (as opposed to buds).

Thanks so much! I looked around on their site...do they take monitors that I already own and make customs out of them using moulds you send them? There was another site I've been trying to find that does it for $80.00...
I haven't bought anything from them. So, I'm not completely sure about your question.... Here's another, but probably not the one you're looking for....

Aha! Found it :) It's a single guy who repairs hearing aides. He also converts IEM's to custom moulds for $80.00.

Here's a post on Head-Fi by a guy who had it done.
